"Uses more memory then it should (128 mbs minimum, linux runs happily with just 64) "
Well now, you must mean "happily, for very small values of happily". While Linux is somewhat better at using meager resources, it's not quite that good.
Of course, with Linux you have the CHOICE of not using KDE or Gnome, and so 64 MB is not tooooo tight, but "happily"...

They lie.
I use XP and Linux daily, among other OSs, and I am sure that XP@64 MB would be unusable. I am not sure you can even install it on a 64 meg machine... let's see..
IEEXPLORE @ 29.004K
explorer @ 14.404K
Navapsvc @ 10.998K
that's about 55MB for three out of 39 visible processes in the task manager - yes I picked the largest ones, but the point is, XP @ 64 MB would be all but unusable.
You said "Assuming somebody does manage to get raw HW access, Sony will make that person disappear in a puff of red smoke."
Not these days. Not since the world is full of "open" wireless access points. Anyone who has the smarts to figure out how to acces the hardware, would have enough smarts to spend an afternoon doing a bit of "war driving".
Sorry about that... Japanese yen.
(At the time the US$ was about 98 yen, so the 100.000 was a LOT to pay for a PC "case"; not that now at 133 yen to the US$ it's that much cheaper...)
They've been selling that style "case" for over two years here in Japan. I can't see the one in the article, it's slashdotted, so I might be talking out of my butt, however I saw something like that at least two years ago in the T-zone. Sold for 100.000 at the time though... WAY to rich for my blood.
true. But, I have yet to find any DVD player that doesn't do the PAL->NTSC "translation" on the fly. There could well be some that don't, but I haven't seen any
with the XP "client" you get to tell it what to do with the sound. I have a headless K6 "pizza box" that is my audio/video player - with a Hollywood+ for the DVD decoding.
XP, as well as win2k before it, get around that by giving you a choice the second time around. I can't remember the win2k message, but it something like "It look like the previous... blah blah blah. Do you want to... or..."
All in all I would say that if someone is using Win ME, s/he shoud consider moving to XP. Nothing really compelling to make me move from win2k though.
I am installing every damn thing I have on my current box -- including VNC
But XPpro comes with its own "terminal server" so in many instances you won't need VNC - I loaded it anyway, as it provides consistency across platforms...
We specifically took issue with their indiscriminate targetting.
Yeah, because of some misguided notion of indiscriminate targetting. I want to see what it's going to happen in Afghanistan after the first body bags return to the US...
Anyhow, in my humble oppinion, the US will have to change it's attitude towards killing "inocent civillians" if they want to get anywhere in Afganistan, and most other places where they "breed" terrorists.
I would recommend that the US leaders read, and try to understand, Clausewitz's "On War"...
The other thing is to leave something simple unfinished the night before, so there's a built-in starting point the next morning.
You must be way more self-disciplined than I am. I could never leave something unfinished. Especially not "something simple". Telecommuting was VERY unhealty for me.
I, for example, find it hard to telecommute, as I work WAY TOOOO much at home. You know, the "Five more minutes, and... the bed is just over there... it's not that I have to drive home..."
If I go to my office, I can "tune out" when I leave the office. If I work at home, I am always "on".
On the other hand, telecommuting I get to eat pizza ALL the time.:-)
In a different life - granted, over eleven years ago - I worked with Juvenile Centres. Hell on Earth for 99% of the kids in there. No better at doing something good for the kids than jails are for adults.

Someone moderated this insightful????

How do YOU know there were no tests? Are you one of the people on the development team?
Furthermore, who cares. Unless you are REQUIRED by your boss to use one at work, you would be doing it voluntarily. So

Fancy? I don't think so...all the cheap okonomi places have that.

(For those who don't know "okonomi," it's short for "okonomiyaki" and the Hiroshima style one is

Not always true; Japan is also region 2 but NTSC.
Akihabara if full of those small "pizza box" type barebones.
... OLD news, and I believe it's been on Slashdot before ....
As for this "minicomputer"
I saw at least thre diferent units that supported Windows Media on Sunday, while in the Tokyo - well, Makuhari - Costco.
Not exactly the same, now. Is it? Apple sold its OS mainly with its hardware ...
(Yes I know about the clones.)

They're CardBus, so you can't use a dusy ole 486 for a wireless gateway.
And why not? As long as the MB has a free PCI slot, that is.
for that kind of duty I'd look at "e-smith." www.e-smith.org

Which alternate reality are you talking about?
