  1. Grandma Test?? on Kernel Bug Means Linux Power Usage Remains High · · Score: 1

Firstly, your logic is with the assumption that Granny uses a laptop. My Dad uses Linux on his Desktop (he has a Laptop also). He is not technically proficient like you claim to be. He has no idea what ASPM or GRUB is. Dad used to use Windows but he could not understand why one day he had some count down box mysteriously appear on his screen (blaster) or why he needs to apply patches or service packs that also seemly make his screen blue. He also had no idea why he needed to pay to upgrade his anti-virus just because he upgraded his OS. My Dad gets aggravated quite easily because he likes that he can turn on his computer and it works. I spent a month talking him around to giving Linux a shot. This was 4 years ago and he is still running the same Debian install on the same PC. Not bad for someone who is not only a Grand Pa but also 70 years old! You're saying that because of some power bug in the Kernel makes the OS fail your "Grandma Test" is a stupid logic and it is broken. Can you honestly say that with all the problems that Windows has had over the years make it Grandma Friendly?? I am not hatting on Windows, just your stupid Logic.

I know this also has something to do with my general ability to remember stuff but when you're 30 mins past check-in for an international flight (which happens to me several times since I live in Bangkok, i.e. worse traffic than NYC), memory tends to come second. I second the Think tank bag choice, I have the one with the security cable attached to it and it's worth it's weight in gold (no pun intended)

It's easy enough to lock down and extremely hard to break. I've actually donated 8 old p4's and a printer to a local school here in Thailand about 6 months ago and installed Debian Squeeze with Libreoffice, Chrome and some printer support and told them I'd be happy to support these PC's for a decent amount of time. I spent 1 hour showing them where everything is, how to print, open a browser window and the only time I've been called is to replace a busted power supply (smart arsed Thai kid's changing the voltage from 220-40 to 110-20!) and apart form that, they've had no problems at all. Sidenote: These kids are around 11 or 12 and have barely touched a computer in their life. Extra points - Debian has fantastic multi language support as does Libre Office. Honestly, heaps of dists will run fine using Gnome on 1gb ram or XFCE/LXDE on 512mb with a CPU made in the last 7 or 8 years. Good on you for donating! Good luck!

Reading OP's essay, it sounds quite glamorous in a geeky sense but seriously, I don't think any amount of money would woo me into that kind of recklessness with any kind of responsibility attached to to. In regards to what happened a few years back, if I recall, that was some guy who accidentally entered an extra 2 0's assuming that he needed to include the decimal at the end. Not completely his fault, since I would've thought the system he was using had some kind of system where it spits out the amount in words? Or maybe not since my trading platform allows for one click trades.

The AP is on a manual time switch (you know, the one that plugs into the wall) so it switches the AP on at 8am, switches off at 5. Real technical stuff I know but seriously, what's the deal with all the press surrounding unsecured wifi nextworks? Is it still 2005? Even if people have encryption or mac address filtering, it's not going to make the world of difference? If someone wants something other than internet, I'm pretty sure 9/10 of those people know how to crack a wifi password or spoof an mac address. I think the important question is, how many people leave the default router password as the same? or how many un-patched windows/mac pc's are sitting behind that router?
