yeah - good call - its not a smart trashcan it is just more spying by the man - so I'll pay the kid next door to roll that baby to the curb a couple of times a week, problem solved
if we have the technology for your trashcan to tell what is recyclable or not, they don't just put that technology at the dump and sort the stuff there automatically ? I seriously doubt the reliability or accuracy of a "smart" trashcan - maybe in about 200 years....
when the conspiracy theorists come out - folks this has nothing to do with the US conspiring to take down this jerk - its just another famous asshole getting targeted because he is famous (or infamous) I'd chalk it up to another Tiger Woods getting busted for cheating, Bill Clinton getting a blow job in the oval office from an intern, John Edwards banging his photographer, etc... The guy probably did do something wrong but the Swiss authorities could never get a case through now anyway because everyone is going to claim conspiracy. Someday in the future if he is a rapist he'll attempt it again, especially after getting away with it - you guy's can come back here then and read all the silly comments about conspiracy and wonder how the government could have let this happen to some poor innocent woman
actually a fair amount of the imagery comes from aircraft already - it would be hard to believe that the soda straw view provided by this little drone could be cost effective - the coverage rate is so low you'd need thousands of them to get the equivalent coverage of an aircraft
The more I use the modern digital scopes the more I hate them. yes they have many useful features like storage (although I did have an analog storage scope at a place I use to work) and the ability to make screen snaps and the like, but there is something about that analog phosphor glow that makes me all warm inside:-) and sampling sometimes has its issues !
while I don't personally know that this goes on the UAE (probably) I do know that they are a pretty lenient Middle Eastern society - I have seen plenty of women in thongs on the beaches and plenty of local women in the malls dressed in standard western style (mini skirts, high heals, etc..), I've also seen groups of women with some in skirts and some fully covered in traditional fashion. You will never see that kind of stuff in Saudi or Jordan etc..
while I will grant you that the government has its issues - I will say that the UAE does take security pretty serious and is probably one of the safest Middle Eastern (maybe the safest) countries for westerners. Part of the security is no doubt due to the intense control and monitoring of its citizens and visitors. I won't make a call whether its good or bad just an observation from someone who has spent a few months there.
on the surface this would seem to cut cost - in fact its probably a wash or slightly more expensive to build a UAV than a manned aircraft - while you can get rid of a lot of systems (pressurization, ejections seats, etc..) you now need at least 2 and most of the time 3 or 4 computers to fly the thing plus redundant air data sensors, really good data links, etc... it really adds up - in fact the computers and data links can be a large majority of the cost of the basic green aircraft
and I'll add that when I have jobs that I find challenging, rewarding, interesting etc.. I have NO time or desire for outside distractions - just an observation from a proclaimed "Right Winger"
I know I am walking into your trap - but I know from my own personal career as an engineer that I have sought outside diversions (consulting, projects etc..) when I have had jobs where I was:
a. Bored into oblivion / no challenges b. Couldn't get anything done at work because of process (one job I had as a government contractor) c. Felt my skills would wither and die if I did not actively pursue them myself
So definitely I look at this as evidence of someone who is preparing for when this job is just a bad memory
now that is really really cool - much more impressive to me than a patent on a battery holder. Kudos to the developers, I hope they make something of it !
I think we should be spending more on alternative energy YEARS ago unfortunately the problem is that the Obama administration has show no fiduciary responsibility spending on EVERYTHING under the sun (no pun intended) with no viable funding stream to pay for it - they spent $3B on the cash for clunkers program for heavens sake !
your right - landing on Mars was really easy, how silly of me to minimize the enormous complexity of putting a small robot somewhere that 12 men have walked on 41 years ago
3 years !!! I would hope we could put a small robot on the moon in 3 years - NASA/JPL designed/built and launched Spirit and Opportunity Rovers to Mars in 3 years
Disaster Area is my favorite band !
if only I had some mod points for ya !
he's prepping for his $250K dollar a year contractor job in Afghanistan when he retires, of course - now he can start sooner !

I'll bet if I go back I can find some Slashdot conspiracy theorist claiming that Han Reiser was setup and that he didn't kill his wife....

not of rape but for the murder of the innocent people who have been or will be executed by the Taliban for helping the U.S
maybe he can share a cell with Hans Reiser

My current job is multitasking to the max ! Its one of those jobs that is so cool and fun you cannot believe you are getting paid to do it !
