I used to work tech support for a ISP and would get TTY calls once a month or so. I can attest that it is painfully slow. Imagine trying to talk someone through troubleshooting their connection through TTY. When one came through it was time to kick back, put my feet on the desk, and get ready to have my call times go WAY up!
"Webmasters should know how to protect their files before they even start writing a Web site," wrote James Reno, chief executive of Amelia, Ohio-based ByteHosting Internet Services. "Standard Apache Password Protection handles most of the search engine problems--search engines can't crack it. Pretty much all that it does is use standard HTTP/1.0 Basic Authentication and checks the username based on the password stored in a MySQL Database."
And chief executives of a hosting company should know how Basic Authentication works before hosting web sites...

but, why doesn't this professor do a little research? It doesn't seem to me that he is putting forth a very good example to his students.
Professor: I'd like myself and some java students to "get into handheld devices and WAP interfaces." But I have no idea where to start. Forget the fact that there are countless places to research this, this is academia! We don't research anything here, let's just ask slashdot!
That's the problem with school today, nobody wants to figure anything out for themselves anymore...
Unfortunately, in the mega-corporation, people don't normally have administrative control over all the servers in the organization. Everything on my network was patched. It's too bad there are incompetent administrators out there that don't patch their machines....
I work for a mega-corporation that was affected by Code Red. Many lines of business here depend upon web based applications to do their job. What happened when port 80 was shut down so that Code Red wouldn't spread itself? Mission critical applications were shut down at the same time until they were brought up on ports other than 80. I am glad to say that the traditional client-server app that I run for my line of business what unaffected.
If it's mission critical, stick to traditional client-server!
I bet Microsoft is wishing they left those hotmail servers on BSD. If I remember correctly, they started moving from BSD to Windows 2000 just about this time last year...of course that was after an unsuccessful try in about the 97/98 time frame....
Let's take a look at some of the more recent articles on spam, and the editors commentary.
Web-Based Emailers That Allow an Access List?
Here Cliff writes:
"It seems like this would be a fairly easy thing to implement, I mean, how difficult would it be to stick a web interface in front of procmail? Does your e-mail web-based service do this? Maybe it's time to start sending some polite emails encouraging them to do so, if they aren't."
Maybe we should send some polite emails to the slashdot staff asking for filters?
Senator Says Spammers Have First-Amendment Rights
Commentary by CmdrTaco:
"...Spammers take away my property and happiness. Isn't that a right too? And opt-out is a joke. I've opted out of countless things, but I still get a hundred+ spams a day. Thank god for mail filters."
Wouldn't it be nice to have slashdot filters?
When Spammers Use YOUR E-Mail Address?
Cliff again:
"SPAM is one thing, but cowardly spammers who have to use someone else's address for their crap advertisements is something else. What can one do in this situation?"
Sounds sorta like what happens around here. Cowardly spammers posting to a public forum. What can one do in this situation? Add filters!
Buried in email?
CmdrTaco again:
"Filtering my mail is the only thing that makes reading my email possible."
Boy, he sure loves those filters. We'd like to use them here also!
To sum things up, how about some filters? I sure would like to ditch anything I personally find offensive.
My wife attends that university of phoenix in one of their brick and morter campuses. If their online program is anything like their brick and morter I would say stay away! From reviewing her course work, I would label UoP a degree mill. They aren't interested in teaching you anything. Their main focus is building your team working skills. Now, don't get me wrong, team working skills are great and all, but if you are going for an information systems degree, the concentration should be on that. What do I mean by the try and build your team working skills? Every class has a study group with a group project. That is EVERY class. Her college math class had a group project. It consisted of each the team being given a set of math problems and they had to come up with the answers "together."
It's a complete joke. Also, to keep in mind, the tuition of online courses at UoP is 350 a credit hour. A rip off. You can do better elsewhere.
Speaking of elsewhere, I would recommend checking out your options. There are lots of them. Check out yahoo's directory at http://dir.yahoo.com/Education/Distance_Learning/C olleges_and_Universities/ for starters. There are also several web pages dedicated to this sort of thing, I would recommend checking out the following urls :
http://www.degree.net/ - pushing a book on the subject, but lots of good info.
http://www.lifelonglearning.com/ - lets you search for a degree program you are interested in.
news://alt.education.distance - the newsgroup. once you find a school, check out its rep here.
Check out your registry and you will notice that Microsoft has deemed it necessary to use the MAC address of your NIC to help identify you...check out the following key :

Seriously though, you are asking what you can do? Go to two machines, or a dual boot. If you come across something that can't be done with your OS of choice, boot into Windows and do it. It is as simple as that.
People have used various remembering aids for years. Everything from a computer, a piece of string tied on your finger, writing on your hand, to a piece of paper. It's crazy to try and say that these memory problems are because of electronic devices. The real problem probably lies in the fact that more drugs have been used by people in those generations than have been used by generations in the past.
Demeaning? No, I wouldn't say so. To use an analogy, when I go into a store and by cigarettes or beer, I don't mind being carded. I know I am old enough and have proof of such. The same applies here. I don't mind taking an exam to prove my ability to perform the job function. I have seen too many people hired into jobs that aren't cabable of doing so.
'What kind of problems have you had in the past that have really stumped you?" and "What was your approach to solving it?" '
'"Windows 98 ME or Windows 2000?" '
Do these questions really tell you if someone is qualified for said position? No. Sure they can give you a feel for that person's social engineering skills, but not much beyond that.
I do advocate having interaction with the potential employee, but just remember that there are plenty of bullshit artists out there. Also, remember, there are plenty of highly skilled individuals out there that don't have a good social interaction skill. My best employee rarely interacts with others, and when he does you can tell he is a little put off. But, he damn sure gets his job done correctly.
"I don't want to give someone a written examination or stage a bunch of fake system emergencies to see how he or she performs. "
Why not? I have found in my experience, as both the interviewer and the interviewee, that written examinations are very beneficial. Make a 40-50 question test and have each potential candidate take it. Of course, your decision should not be based solely on the outcome of this exam, but it should weigh rather heavily.
I would also suggest that once you whittle your list down to 2-4 candidates, give them a "lab". Present them with 4 or 5 machines and a list of specs. I.e., you need to set up a pdc and a bdc with a file server with the domain name of blah, etc. What better way to figure out who can really do the job? I've seen lots of people that can talk the talk but can't actually walk the walk.
What I think the original replier meant was to add the Ask Slashdot slashBOX to your main page. Go to your preferences and check the box for Ask Slashdot under "Customize Slashboxes". If you do that, you will see all the Ask Slashdot articles in a convienent box on the main page...
"According to commentators, whoever finds the Higgs first will probably win a Nobel Prize."
I don't know what the heck the Higgs is, but I sure hope that the scientists don't think along the same lines as these commentators. The scientists should be after something "just because". Not for the Nobel Prize.
