I've always wondered what was the purpose of that part.

Between cable-modems and xDSL, analog Internet access is on its way out. Our concerns about Internet access being dominated by carrier monopolies or oligopolies should be directed at the broadband providers.

In any case, for the rest of the transition period, while analog is still the predominant Internet access method, the local phone carriers still have their ISPs. If anyone else can survive making their dialup access a loss leader, it's the baby Bells. Some competition is better than none.

Usually the way virulent virii become less virulent is by killing lots of victims. Basically, if you're a parasite, killing off all your hosts is usually maladaptive and is selected against.

Unfortunately, this won't necessarily apply to AIDS. Due to its extended incubation period, a carrier of the virus can spread it for years before dying.

On the other hand, TANSTAAFL applies to the microbial world too; if we're lucky, the resources that a putative airborne AIDS virus spends in building a more durable coat will also make it less virulent (by not reproducing as quickly, for example). But I wouldn't want to count on that.

Nevertheless, IE deals with that problem quite effectively by rendering a small placeholder where the image would go, then redoing the layout when it gets enough of the image to determine the size.

I've heard it said that the current Netscape doesn't do this because its layout engine is too slow and cumbersome... that's why the improved rendering engine in Mozilla is exciting, because it allows for on-the-fly rerendering a la IE.
