From looking at the trailer this looks like another Frankenstein plot. Mad scientist creates artificial human, artificial human has problems. Same plot in Blade Runner, etc. Can't anyone think of any new Sci-fi plots already?
Tagline: A Monster Science Created - But Could Not Destroy!
Plot Outline: Frankenstein creates a true android from dead human parts, but it gets out of his control and gets into trouble
By the thirteenth edition (1989) [Of Samuelson's economic textbook], Samuelson and Nordhaus declared, "the Soviet economy is proof that, contrary to what many skeptics had earlier believed, a socialist command economy can function and even thrive"
I
linked to a article about renewed DOE interest in cold fusion in one of my comments and was throughly ridiculed. Well just goes to show that being ahead of the curve is never easy.
I think the problem with these smaller computers is that the designers think people want a keyboard that feels like a desktop computer but really, if the keyboard is smaller it's too easy to push the other keys. I had a HP 200lx for a while in the mid 90s. The thing was pocket size and had a great chiclet keyboard that is similar to the calculators. Because the keys were so hard to push down it was easy to type accurately on it even though my fingers were bunched together on it. I took notes at about 60WPM in college as the professor was speaking and got excellent notes that made studying easy. I can type normally at about 80wpm. I had to work at it to get to 60 wpm but with the 200lx keyboard you could do fast six finger typing by place your finger in between keys and and leaning your fingers to the right or left to push keys. If there were a mini laptop out there with a keyboard like this I would definitely by it.
The main skill that American's have over people in India in China is Americans can go into debt.
We can get credit cards, huge home equity loans, bank loans, cash out refinances, etc. at ridiculously low interest rates. We then spend our money telling the Chinese and the Indians what products to make and they put their savings in the bank which puts it in U.S Treasury's and mortgage backed securities and then they lend it out to us again, etc.
If this keeps on going soon the whole economy will consist of people borrowing against assets to employ people in other countries to make stuff for us. They are paid in money that they lend back to us with interest.
She may have three breasts, which is easy to believe and even possible with current technology. What's hard to believe is that motor scooter she is riding is probably powered by something other than the Bernoulli effect (Which is what causes plane wings to generate lift). We need to invent anti-gravity first to have this kind of future.
So in 10 years the world will look like...

Speaking of fusion. Here's an article in popular mechanics about cold fusion's rebirth as a cheap way to make nuclear weapons.

'new economic system' born of 'unconscious cooperation' embodied by such technologies as Google links and Amazon lists
The last time I checked my car didn't run on Google Links and Amazon lists and I didn't sleep inside a Blog. An economic system has to deal with the physical world, and where the rubber meets the road is where all the conflict has been over the course of human history We're talking about the distribution of SCARE resources like oil, timber, cement, skilled labor, etc. not things that can be effortlessly and almost endlessly copied, like computer programs. Maybe he's talking about a new form of commerce, or a new concept of intellectual property but he's nowhere near a new economic system.
This website has a list of many advanced propulsion technologies under devleopment by JPL. Considering that we are using chemical rockets which have been known about since the 30's it's good to see that people are looking into new propulsion tech. These systems, some of which can reach the speed of light, include Advanced Chemical Propulsion, Nuclear Propulsion, Antimatter Propulsion, Electric Propulsion, Micro Propulsion, Beamed Energy, Sails, Gravity/AeroGravity Assist, Chemical and Electromagnetic catapults, Tethers Skyhooks and Towers,Extraterrestrial resource utilization, etc.
I use it for POP and IMAP email every day. It can even read attachments! It has a much better web browser than the blackberry that does a great job of rendering regular web sites in nice readable fonts. It even has an SSH and telnet client for crying out loud!
If you really want battery life at the expense of everything else an aging HP200lx plamtop will run for a week or two on two double AAs.
A little better is the hiptop phone which has a querty keyboard and lets you web browse and type email on. In practice mine lasts about a day with ocassional usage , twice that if on standby and a lot less if you use it to make a lot of phone calls.
Note:I haven't flamed anybody in a long time but this whole post was just too much
For all I know the Indians might be better programmers but working on the law of averages the problem solving ability of an indivdual is probably independant of their location.
There are a billion people in India. There are probably the same percentage of smart people as there are anywhere else. With 5 times as many people as the U.S I would expect there to be some good engineers in their population.
So it really is about the cold, hard dollars.
Business is always about money, duh.

Hahahaha!!!!! You are totally ignorant of the history of the 20th century. You could be operating under a different idea of what the word "free" means.

Out sourcing is an evil plain and simple. Why should a company's profit be at the expense of an individuals welfare? Who has the most votes after all.. the individual or the company? Government should serve you and me before the MD
Tell the engineers in India that outsourcing is evil. Why deny them jobs? If developing software becomes more profitable for companies because of outsourcing that will draw more firms into the business for the easy profits, and more people will be employed productivley in software until the cost of software developers rise to the point where software development is no longer profitable.
Not allowing outsourcing will mean that there are fewer profitable software projects and less will get developed and fewer people will be employed in the profession.
I think what we should do instead of blowing all this money on manned space flight is to plow money into basic physics research. I'm not talking about String Theory or Cosmology. I'm talking about good ol' fashioned experimental science. Whether it be quantum teleportation, collapsing bubble fusion, materials science, or anyone of a number of cutting edge research areas that increase our understanding of and ability to manipulate the physical world. This is where the real advances are going to come from that are going to allow for human space exploration. We are still using chemical rockets for space travel which we've known about since the 30s!!
Far too much money goes into these partical accelerators and underground partical detectors that help scientists prove cosomological theories about the universe and about places that we won't get to in a million years and about energies that are far beyond our ability to manipulate. Let's focus the money on the practical science.
I have a domain that I host mail for, let's call it thedomain.net. Every day 24 hours a day I get connections from thousands of different computers all sending mail to bernard@thedomain.net, ashley@thedomain.net, and any one of a hundred thousand other possible names at @thedomain.net that don't exist. These machines that connect to my machine are using the user unknown bounces to send spam to forged return addresses.
Naturally I put in a script to watch for this, drop the mails and ban the ips but I've been running the thing for a few days and I have 5000 banned ip addresses in my ipchains firewall!!! I am beginning to think that the number of compromised windows machines out there has led to an absolute security CATASTROPHE of science fiction proportions. The machines attacking me, according to ARIN, are located all over the world.
I'm not really that important or interesting a target, having a measily DSL line but yes I get constant connections from many different computers all over the world all day trying to use me to bounce mail.
I really think, if people knew how huge the number of compromised windows machines there were out there, people would be embarassed to recommend Microsoft products.
I'm a believer in the possibility of intelligent life on other planets but since we really don't know how far along we are to finding intelligent life, how do we know when we're going to get there?
To give you a geek analogy, it's like your downloading a file of unknown length and you finally got a byte of data from someone and you think that oh I'll be finished by 2020 because this file couldn't be more than 2 terrabytes and I'm getting 1 bit a second. Unfortunately the universe is a big place and the stream of data might never end so estimating your completion time is meaningless.
Blackmail is defined as:
1. Extortion of money or something else of value from a person by the threat of exposing a criminal act or discreditable information.
While Extortion is:
1. The act of extorting; the act or practice of wresting anything from a person by force, by threats, or by any undue exercise of power; undue exaction; overcharge.
Now since these guys weren't threatening to reveal something about the company this is garden variety extortion and not blackmail.

Frankenstein returns 1163 matches on IMDB so I think this qualifies as a cliche. Take a look at the plot summary of the original if you don't believe this is in the same tradition.
