It Looks like it has been announced now. I haven't been using any of the 2.3.x kernels as I haven't had a need. Now I think I would like to start. Any huge "gotchas" that I should know about before I put this on my backup system?
YOu can create your own using the PCChips Book PC . I'm not sure if Linux has all of the drivers you need and I'm aware of PCChips quality problems but I really like the book PC features. BTW: I put a ebay link to the article because PCChips site is so slow. I'm not the person selling this item.
Great article.. Thanks for the reference. I believe I would take that 1 in 10 chance. The real motivtion for working for a start-up would be the fact that you get to do all sorts of jobs from System Admin to Proposal Writing.
By the way, there is a Bolo for indows out now. Everyone needs to persuade John to port it to Linux/Unix. Get it at http://members.xoom.com/jamorrison/winbolo.html

Read my post. Did I say anything about Oracle being "better"? I'm talking real world here. I have NEVER seen a InterBase database used on a production system. I have seen well over 50 Oracle database used for mission critical applications. InterBase may be a great database but the facts are - Inprise is losing money on it. - People are using Oracle instead. - Open sourcing Interbase is a "Good Thing"
The only other option for Inprise is to mothball it. How can Interbase compete with Oracle? If you had a choice to use InterBase or Oracle which would you choose? Now if they open source it there may be a huge amout of utilities developed for it which would make it more popular. I wonder what kind of license they would use. If it is a true "Open Source" license then it may hurt MySQL or PostgreSQL.
CmdrTaco or Hemos wrote this book. It includes all of the cool gadgets mentione on Slashdot. Take all of the cool gadgets articles from here and you have a book. not a bad idea.
I think I will have to buy QuakeIII now just to support a company that is so cool. Doh, Guess I'll have to get a Voodoo3 as well. Come to think of it, this GPL announcement just cost me over 100 bucks.
A device that attaches to my glasses (sorry you 20/20 people) that pinpoints my mouse position and then responds to a clenching of the teath for a mouse click. Oh what the damage a sneeze could do.
If it was this easy then everyone would be doing it. To quote CNET:
"LinuxOne had no revenue and a net loss of about $17,000 from its inception through July 31, the filing said. With almost 9.2 million shares to be outstanding after a planned IPO, the company would sell about a 33 percent stake and have a market value of $73.3 million if shares sell for $8 each."
$73 million for what? To continue the quote:
"LinuxOne said it operates a Web site with information and news about open source software and offers technical support, training, custom development, and consulting. The company makes its version of Linux, known as LinuxOne Operating System, available free via download from the Web site or for a price on CD-ROM."
Wow.. a web site with information and news about open source software... Now that is original.. And I found NO free download. I can't believe the press is falling for this. I think I'll file my SEC papers tommorrow for Zoid.com. There isn't anything there but apparently there doesn't have to be. What a scam.
The Register reported this on 07/26/99 but nobody listened. Then again, nobody ever listenes to the register:) I love it when they are right. http://www.theregister.co.uk/990726-000020.html
Linux is in a good position to be used in alot of situations. How many people need a web server that gets 1500 hits/sec? How man people need a web server right now without shelling out the license fees? We hav been running a Linux server since Redhat 2.1/Caldera Network Desktop 1.0 preview 1. We don't get hits like that so why does it matter? If I was hosting a site that got 1500 hits/sec I would be making so much $$ that I would have a major support contract with sombody that I could blame when it didn't work (I wouldn't choose M$). Linux is here, linux is good, Linux will improve. NT is here, NT kinda works, you will reboot NT today.
Wow.. you aren't kidding. I didn't realize that there were so many vendors on the Linux bandwagon. For $344 you can get a k6/300 with 32 meg running Linux. 4 years ago you gould get a P100 with 32 meg running windows 95 for around 2k. Isn't competition great!
Oops, What I really should have said is that Slackware is a "cool continuation" of SLS. My first installation was on a killer 486sx/25 with 16 meg. This cost arount $2000 at the time. i installed 0.95xxx? and loved it! I then changed jobs an bought the first commercial release of Linux "The Caldera Network Desktop". This was in 95. I still have the disk. I called the day the pre-release came out. I was order number 32. It ran great on a $3000 P-100 with 32 meg.........
Now these were real distributions! Slackware wash just a cheap SLS ripoff:) Somebody needs to do a history of Linux Distributions.. Hmm Maybe I'll go for it.
Probably none. Dell is selling these to corporate customers. Go to Pricewatch ang get your cheap boxes an install Linux yourself. Be happy that a MAJOR PC manufacturer is offering Linux. Now my company might look at Linux as a real OS since Sell is offering it (something I've been telling them for yeard).
Look closely at the amazing time-lapse movies. The first one is actually becomming some sort of lizzard man. This is really weird......

Where is the FUD in this?

25 million investment in a fraud? I don't think anyone could get 25 million peddling snake oil. I'm willing to give him the benifit of the doubt.

Where do I apply for this job? This would be the coolest job even if Bill is signing my paychecks.

Officials Urge Calm? Officials of what? Did we have an election that I'm not aware of?
All I want is a G3 on a ATX motherboard. Where can I get this?
Very un-informed when it comes to BeOS..

Doesn't Mozilla use GTK+?
What can Hummingbird offer?
NFS: Samba has this beat hand's down.
XWindows Server: I'll stick with VNC.
Telnet: Haha
A Name: Hummingbird is well known in IT Shops
I guess they have a name to offer...
We must preserve this piece of "cough" internet history.
