IIS is included in all their servers.

If it was not for Linux there would be a few $$$ with IIS. Chances are you would have to purchase it like exchange.

I programed in JCL IBM 360/370, COBOL, Fortran, and I agree that at the time the TAb was used for this. As a matter of fact all you were doing was entering data within a punch card. At the time all programing was based on this 80 col system which was devised in the puchcard days. Unfortunately this still follows us until today.

An advanced accounting system today no longer requires that you enter the "." It is assumed. This reduces the time in keypuch entry.

My only point is that I wish that todays programs would allow us to configure the keyentry response so we can optimize for our own use.

In spreadsheets it makes sense that the Tab will advance to the next column and that enter will advance to the next line. But I would like to configure my browser to use the Enter key to advance to the next feild so that web based accounting apps would not slow down the entry of numerical data.

  13. Re:Web Applications on XML and Java, Developing Web Applications · · Score: 2
You see before we had GUIs, and windows, next feild was always Enter. While tab seems to work in text/word processing, keypunch entry is another matter.

If you ever had to use an older app where the Enter key was advance to the next feild you would understand what i mean. I've used both. I have seen no benefit except confussion to the TAB. In accounting the TAB key just slows you down. You have to use both hands for key entry. Since most of your time is spent in key entry and account equiry. If you look at any major company with more than 1000 clients you will notice the account numbers are numeric. Faster entry, faster search (Human) lower cost of labor.

I have also used Enter in other database apps. I never felt it slowed me down. I just wish that all software had an option to treat Enter as Tab.

I wathch these GUI based apps and god are they slow to work with. They take less time to learn but god forbid if you have a lot of transactions to enter.

So I will agree with you except for the TAB issue.

All I can sys is that I love the stability of Linux, FreeBSD and MAC OS X. As far as intuitive goes its a question of what you are used to.

What I love about X on Linux and FreeBSD is the desktops. If you need to work on more than one app at a time and to cut and paste between apps nothing beats X.

As far as stability goes, I only reboot when I install new hardware or upgrade the system to a new version about once or twice a year.

Based on your argument why not switch to Mac. No install required just click on the icon on the CD and viola! you are playing. If you wish to install it on your system just drag and drop it where you want it.

What gets me with Windows is that when you have something that you know works but that you have to keep reinstalling the software or to keep thing simple save your stuff on another system and reinstall. You do not know what is being installed and you have to take great care to insure that the system is running well. If you ever had a test system where you constantly install...test...deinstall you would have a hard time keeping this system running properly without problems for a year.

Now on linux you have the dependencies. It may require a couple of minutes more to install but in the end you never have to reinstall the OS to keep the stability. This also applies to FreeBSD and such.

Not as simple or as inexpensive as you might think. First you should price a T1 it will come out around $1,000 to $1,500 per month. Now how many neighbors would be willing to share the cost 10, 15, 20. For this point I will give you the benefit and say it's only 10. That would be 150kbps if you all decide to use it at the same time. Total bandwidth in a given month (assuming 24h operation) aprox: 440G that would represent 44G per user based on 24 hours. Now we all know that most will use it between 6:00pm when they get home from work and 12:00am midnight since most people work the next day and need to sleep. This is only 6h but I will give you 8h. That is 1/3 of the total bandwidth available to you wich gives you a total of 147G. divide this by 10 and all you have is 15G per user at 1/10th the speed of DSL at more than twice the cost.

Don't get me wrong I do not agree with the cable/telcos but unlimited bandwidth was a carrot that helped them sell the service. In most cases you probably sold more for them than all their marketing. Now they do NOT need your marketing any more they have the idiots who do not need hog speed Internet and who use less that 1G per month. Since you probably transfered (and took your friends with you)from a mom and pop ISP who did not have the $$$ to compete in the high speed game you no longer have them to turn to because they have gone belly up.

"You just cant fit 10 pounds of SH1T in a 5 pound bag." Now that the mom and pops have gone out of business cabel/telcos can no longer afford to give it away and are starting to charge a $$$$$ rate.
