  1. Computer useage in schools spreading, but limited on Students Outpacing Teachers With Online Skills · · Score: 1
I know that many of there students are miles ahead of them, but they try to incorporate it in their curriculum when possible.

When I was in school, the web was still very young and the only valid use in school for the internet might have been research for a paper. But now times are changeing. Some teachers in highschool are answering questions by email, some post materials online for students.

Both of my parents are highschool teachers, and I got them to use computer more and more in there teaching method. It started with useing word processing to create tests and assignemnts, but now they do online research, answer questions by email, do virtual since labs over the internet, use computer games such as Sim Coaster to demonstrate the principles of physics, etc.

The big complaint I hear from them is not that they are not able to incorporate the internet and computers more becuase of there skills (they are not experts by any means, but they get by with what they need to do), but that schools do not have the proper equipment to do what they want to. Computers, internet access, etc are all limited resources in many schools.

To make maters worse, when the schools do get money for equipment, it often gets improperly set up or isn't getting used as it is down. The schools often can't afford to spend them oney to higher a descent IT staff to setup and manage the computers efficiently. This made worse by students who decide to hack and break the school systems for fun...the staff can't keep up.
Unless schools are willing to shell out the money to get descent staff to setup and support the systems and networks well, and train the teachers to use them effectively, the teachers will always have a hard time keeping up.

2 hours from canada, city and shore??? Sure if you drive REALLY fast maybe you could hit NYC in 2 hours, but no way are you going to be in canada in 2 hours, or Cape Cod.

Anyway, the Hudson Vally is a resonable area to live. I spent 4 years there as a student at RPI. Its much cheaper then Silicon Valley (where I live and work now). If i made the same money there that I made here I would live like a king!! There is also quite a bit of tech there. I worked there for 2 summer, one in the Rensselaer Tech park where there are quite a few tech companies, and the other at GE CRD. GE is HUGE out there. I considered staying there, and I would even consider moving back there. It does have a lot to offer the tech industry.

I agree. This definitly is a poor artical, giving examples but no real advice on when or why you would choose one technology over the other.

The coverage of Java is very poor, and the omission of JSPs is a big deal. Most sites combine servlets and JSPs, which is a very powerfull combination.

I also found it odd that the example extended GenericServlet, not HTTPServlet.

  6. Re:Let's recap. on Courts Gives Napster 72-Hour Deadline · · Score: 1
Yes, the posting said must remove the material, but the artical says "Napster Inc. has just 72 hours to block any copyright songs."

What doesnt make sense to me is this line of the artical:
"the recording industry will have to notify Napster of the title of the song, the name of the artist and the name of the file containing the infringing material."

This means that the RIAA must specify EVERY FILE NAME THAT THEY WANT BLOCKED! Think about it, you do a search on napster, you can find the same song named 100 differnent ways! A song got blocked? No problem, change the file name slightly, and your good to go again!

It would be more effective if it was song titles following some regular expression, or containing the song title/etc in the file name. Based on what the artical says, this means the RIAA has alot of work cut out for it if this injunction is going to do much of anything.

Ok, while part of my would like nothing more then to see cell phone jammed in movie thearters, classrooms, and other places that should be disturbance free (I don't really have a problem with starbucks), I also see potential problems with this.

What happens to the doctor who gets an emergency call durring the movie? Or even just the concerned parents who are out and get an emergency call from the babysitter or kids? Isn't on of the main points of cell phones reachability? If someone has there cell phone on vibrate (so the ring doesn't annoy people), used caller ID to make sure its actualy a potentialy important call, and steps outside to have the conversation, I guess I dont really have that much of a problem with it.

Of course I would be living in some sort of dream world to expect everyone to follow those rules of cell phone courtesy in public. Maybe if we start shooting those who don't comply.

I really just don't get this. I run Linux because I like the stability, speed, the operating environment, shell, ability to custimize the look and feel of my UI beter then windows, etc.

I do NOT run linux becuase of the avaliable application support. Yes this has goten beter with Gimp, various office suites, and more better software, but still not as good as windows for some of those programs you NEED sometimes.

If not for a small group of applications, I probably wouldnt run windows ever. But what does a windows user really benifit from running Linux applications on windows?

Interesting point. I know that most of my MP3s where gotten off of windows filesharing at college. Getting files off the local network was much faster, and chances are someone at the school had the mp3 i wanted shared.

We even had students create network seach engines so we could seach the network for mp3s. The nicest part was, the servers (on linux) would even allow you to get the samba share through http so you could still easily search and download from you linux box.

So who is to be held liable for all this? Microsoft? The creaters of the search engine? Maybe the college for "allowing" this to happen?

If i email an MP3, should the ISP be held liable?

The RIAA will never be able to stop the swaping of mp3. They would have to sue just about everyone with a computer.
