I just did my senior thesis on synthetic diamond. The technology coming down the line is incredible.
The Russians are doing gem quality diamonds 4 carets every 72 hours. They're also going to do LCD monitors that use almost no power (yet are bright and vivid without backlighting) out of diamond as well.
Simple doping already gives np switching with rough diamond films such as the one shown in the article.
So don't bother buying a diamond engagement ring if you're getting married. In a decade they'll be free with a can of motor oil at Wal-mart.
If I'm not mistaken NC is a right to work state meaning it is possible to be hired if you're not a union member. This makes it very attractive for independant and low budget films to get made. I think The Crow was filmed in NC for $9 million but the Hollywood price tag would have been 3 times that.
This doesn't supprise me at all. The NSA doesn't really care about protecting secrets that you can read about in old publications. None of the technology described sounded like anything my local cable tv company doesn't have. (except for the carpet)
In fact the NSA has a ton of technology on display at the Museum of Cryptology. I went there last summer and saw a Cray, a big black Thinking Machines doohickey, some finger print scanners and several Enigma machines. All technology you can read about in more than 4 locations so it's no longer secret.
I'm glad the astronimers got to reap the benefit. It doesn't sound like anything the NSA left behind needed to be kept secret and someone now makes good use of it.
I'd like one. I've thought about making one myself. Handwriting is key! I don't like to type so I don't carry the laptop to class. In fact there are a bunch of posts that say laptops can do this. That's nice but not within the specs. The Palm is too small to take notes on but I wouldn't mind writing grafiti to get my notes into the computer.
No the law as written on macrovision descramblers is against selling not using. The law against 800mhz scanners is in listening. Merely possessing is not a crime. They have to prove that I'm using the illegal frequencies. IANAL yet but I'm pretty sure I'm grandfathered and am free to own both those objects.
When they outlawed 800mhz scanners I went out and bought one. Just to have it in case I ever needed it. When they outlawed macrovision descramblers I got 2. Looks like I'll have to go and buy a ton of old computer hardware, drives, super-vhs vcr's etc. It's a good thing I have some technical skills to keep these kind of things running.
Perhaps I'll learn how to paint or play piano instead of watching HDTV that I have have no fair use of.
I meant when comparing the Palm III to the V. I know the Rex is tiny compared to either of them. If space is truly a premium then get the Rex but for me whatever fits a pocket is small enough.
A few folks have complained about the size of a Palm III verses a V. I carry a III arround in my jeans pocket no problem. In fact it's smaller then the Cannon digital camera I keep in the other pocket. I understand the Compaq's are pretty big compared to any Palm device.
I'm a student so it's no big deal for me to wear jeans or shorts with deep pockets every day. So I guess if you had to you could get a belt clip and be like Batman.
BTW I chose a Palm vs the other PDA's as it seemed to have the best handwriting recognition for my way of holding a pen. However I wish the whole screen could accept text instead of the lower box. The Rex's tiny onscreen keyboard would piss me off pretty quickly but maybe that's because I'm used to the grafiti.
I don't want to help them bad enough to "upgrade" to Netscape 6. Perhaps if they chose a different browser I'd try it. I just don't trust what I've heard about Netscape 6.
A lot of people here forget that the time this happened was during the end of the heavy recession of the early to mid 1990's. There weren't really any jobs available and so they kind of did have a gun pointed at their heads.
I got DSL at my home in Salem, MA last month. I'm happy with it. There have been a couple times when I couldn't connect to the network right away but that's nothing compared to taking 40 hours to download my research on a 56k line. I haven't seen any more spam then when I was at mindspring.

That work may have been funded privately but it was based on research started with public money. Celera would be nowhere if the public sector hoarded their secrets to the degree the private sector does.
If Celera want's to brag in a peer reviewed forum they should obey the public rules.
Publishing a summary without the underlying data is nothing more than a free commercial for Celera.
Celera owes it's data to the world as they only finished a process that was started by public research funding.
These big companies would all be nowhere if the public sector protected it's research to the degree that the private companies do.
I don't know the specifics of who runs Celera but I'm suspicious that many of their top scientists did research in the public sector for years and then went private when they got close to a breakthrough.
There's too much of a mix of public research and private patents these days.
My Compac Presario 1685 laptop has epoxy poured into the dipswitches. Could it be to stop me from changing my configuration? Is it so that their customer support doesn't have to deal with problems from users who need things a little different from the way it was shipped?
Seriously I have to open it up so often now I don't even put the screws back in.
I know the reason I don't get wireless on my Palm Pilot is that I'm alreading paying $40 per month for DSL at home. I don't want to pay another montyhly fee for something I get FREE at school and am paying for at home. I just don't need internet that bad during that 1/30th of the week where I'm not at school or home. In fact I kind of resent having a cell phone but emergencies happen. Perhaps if wireless internet could be combined with one bill for all services it would catch on.
Now don't get the wrong idea about me. It's not a money issue it's a value for the money issue. I pay $70 per month for cable TV which comes out to a dollar an hour for what I watch.
But to add another bill and another layer of services I pay for but don't take full advantage of. I can live without wireless internet. Which is kind of a shame for the wireless industry because I'm the kind of early adapter who gets his friends & class mates into new technologies.

I have the above web address from register.com and have had no trouble from them. In fact the Citizen Watch company is aware of the address and I haven't heard from their lawyers. Provided my new watch doesn't break down 6 months into a 5 year warrantee (like the first one) I'll let the address expire then they can have the address if they want it.
Interesting I didn't know they collect info and submit it to the IRS. So will I be able to deduct these losses against other gambling winnings?

I use grafiti because I don't want to carry arround an extra device. If I wanted a keyboard I'd buy a PSION or VIAO.

It's your screw them if they can't do what I did mentality that forces the government to step in when it's the employers doing it.

I miss Radar Rat Race for the C64. I'd pay 1983 prices not adjusted for inflation to play it again. Perhaps with a little better AI thrown in.

Now if only we can hack the Sony Pet and Aibo.
