I attend a Large Tech univeristy (engineering, cs is the reputation of the school) and we have the pleasuer of have a computer department that really supports the free open unmonitored internet... they refuse administration requests to monitor anything, block napster, etc... true they do use the throw bandwith at it, it will be ok approach to dealing with napster type issues.. but really that is the best way, expensive but thats why I pay $200 a year for eithernet (10bt) but 3.5 OC3's.. its still flyes... man its great!
The two biggest issues with them so far for me is:
1. The book readers.. are huge.. way bigger then palms or pocketpc's... make them tiny and maybe..
2. Damn copyright bs, if I can get popular books by paying for them, and older ones by downloading them (you know shakespear old) then maybe.. but if EVER title has to pass though hand's then forget it... but.. to all the "secure" book things will be cracked.. so who knows... maybe they just need to bring the cost WAY WAY WAY down..
I think the BSA knows that there will be mass exidust to free software if they start cracking heads over licences...
Once they do the first crack down, that is big, it will be all over the national news.. people will get pissed/scared/confused on what to do.. and will really start looking around for other options. But! only if free software capatilizes on it.. and gets word of mouth going so that people know its out there.
My man.. I toss up some karma to this excelent reply..
I agree with you in both paragraphs.. open source usualy equils pain in the ass to setup.. but solid and more robust... good points..
in the second one.. I agree to.. but I dont see a solid future for open source "look alike projects" the sort that look at MS and say they make so and so software.. so we should make the open source equivilent... then never seam to work out... but who knows.. maybe this one will.
With the Supreme court apeal guaranteed... this may have some odd effects... Bush may get involved, people may want to see the proceedings on TV, who knows this case is getting OLD to.. I mean they are arguing about IE 3.0 getting put in as part of windows... ehhh wonder if the whole thing could be settled by a crazy Napster, RIAA, AOL, Microsoft, DOJ, Merger that would be unheard of.
They said they will continue to honor their contracts? But do even the people they had contracts with care? It seams like no one had any money invested in this except the cuecat people themselves. If anyone can find any partners that are going to lose money post below.
So some.. some practices that are bad.. make the whole company evil?
Thats just dumb, Microsoft is a big fucking company, they have lots of parts. What about there mice, are they evil to? What about easy of use os's.. man those are evil. What about making a os that your mom can use without 8 hours of training, thats so evil. Sure these may not be unic things, but linux is evil, its technology prohibitive from users in the inner city... get some logic.. all of MS isant evil.
The statistics published on the top of this article arent contradictory. They are just different.
NOOOOO this isant another instance of making statistics show what you want.. this is another instance of a/. moron posting shit that is wrong.
For Instance...
Only 8.6 percent of servers shipped in 3rd quarter 2000 were running Linux, claims a recent Gartner Dataquest report. A previous study published by IDC estimated linux held about 24% of the server market share. Unsurprisingly the Gartner study was partially commissioned by Microsoft
It says 8.6% of servers SHIPPED... that is wholly different then 24% RUNNING linux, as would be in stated SERVER MARKET SHARE.
The/. employee that posted this errored just as much.. damn they are just as dumb as the trolls sometimes.
>>>>> Yeah, let's get down to the lowest common denominator and make laws that require all internet content to be at least in X number of languages. A bit like the silly EU regulation because of which every fucking document, web site and audio recording concerning the Union must be available in at least.
You have to be kidding right? Laws that goverent the internet? isant that dumber then multipul languages?
I think AOL is trying to just appease the FTC with its monthy releaseses of just so little more of the messaging specks and open-ness
In other words I think they are trying to release it so slow that it will not matter when they fully release it... but all the while releaseing just enough to keep the FTC happy.
"A 75GB hard disk would only hold around 30 minutes of the video, according to company officials, making the trading of HD content over the Internet impossible..."
Right right.... obvisly they dont understand or are lying.
Do you find it hard to get the resources to continue to learn programming/linux/computers, resources like new computers, second computers for os experiments, and computer books dont come cheap. Do you ever have a hard time fitting them into the budget?
If you are dabbeling in Linux, you most likely know a good set of the basics of computers and networks as a whole. What sort of role do you play at school with computers? Do you go to a school where they put tons of security and filters up, if so do you circumvent any to do what you need to do? Have you ever had any problems or been held back because of your schools computer or network policy?
The people who wrote this article have never really used real spead on the Internet, they have just used shitty @home services that are no better then modems.... Wait untill you have 900kbs under your belt then the Internet becomes a huge part of your life that enriches and makes what you do easier in ways that other people just cant get.
