  1. Catastrophic? on The Doomsday Clock Is Moved Closer To Midnight · · Score: 1

Again, who says climate change is catastrophic? More people die due to cold weather than warm weather. More polar bears die due to hunting than drown at sea. The reactionist, look at me groups need to get a grip and read "Cool It" by Bjorn Lomborg.

  3. The only reason this makes news? on Large Ice Shelf Expected To Break From Antarctica · · Score: 2, Interesting

Seriously, the only reason we hear about these icebergs is due to people using fear to scare mankind into making costly measures to prevent some mythical disaster. Mankind has a remarkable ability to adapt to change. The creatures of this earth also adapt to change. If the conditions are not favorable, they die. Why after all these years of living on this planet do we think we have the ability to stop it? I have seen figures saying more will be spent to ATTEMPT to stop warming than will be spent adapting to the change. It is a SHAM we are trying to stop natural change and are AFRAID to adapt.

  4. Fighting Light Pollution on Making War On Light Pollution · · Score: 1

Imagine returning from a vacation to 900 W of light shining on your home as your eccentric neighbor fears the dark. Nine 100 W compact fluorescent lights on three posts shining through all hours of the night. The girl friend was so proud they were saving energy and I made it clear the lights were unwelcome. What do they do, only run them 6 hours a night. It was bad enough that I didn't need lights in my home and I live in the country.

There was no part of my 1.7 acres of land that wasn't impacted by their callous landscaping idea. Even during an aurora event in 2006, when asked to turn off the lights, they turned them off for 5 minutes, turned them back on and drove away.

When asked to minimize the lights (i.e. only use them when needed), they installed 60 W equivalent lights. So, the answer, buy the guy's business' abandoned web domain and put up a protest page. After 15 months of these annoying lights, they went off within 10 days of the site going up and were eventually removed.

Do I have a relationship with my neighbor now? No! The loss of privacy and their lack of respect for their neighbors has greatly soured my desire to interact with them. Of course, I was the only one to complain which makes me wrong?

    Anyone need a web domain?

With evolution, biology makes no sense. Let's see you make the necessary amino acids, put them together in the necessary order to make DNA, create an environment that keeps them from degrading and then somehow they become more complex molecules.

If you have not noticed, entropy takes more complex items and turns them into simplier, lower energy state things. There are no local variations without someone doing work to reverse entropy, but in the end, entropy increases.

Science has yet to see a single-cell organism suddenly become a multicell organism and evolve. You can take a bacteria and turn it into many bacteria, but no one has taken bacteria and turned it into a form of life where both cells require each other support themselves.

My pamphlet, a PhD in Chemical Engineering.

Let's talk about your computer. Did it evolve by itself? Or did someone have to create it? DNA by it's nature requires the amino acid chains to be in a certain order. You can't simply put it together. The odds of evolving the right order are astronomical. In one book I have read written by 50 biologists, scientists, mathmaticians, it's improbable.

  7. Is it only the Christians who believe in a Creator on Using Copyrights To Fight Intelligent Design · · Score: 1

I find it interesting that everyone points their fingers at Christians for the concept that the world was created by God. Muslims and Jews also hold to this view, but it's only the Christians being singled out. It's a shame that the view is narrowed to Christians.

If someone figures out how to reverse entropy without increasing it somewhere else, please share it with the world. The last time I checked, increasing entropy was a law, not a theory. Evolution has yet to account for the fact that everything degrades without someone putting some effort to keep it from happening.

  10. The threat to national security on GOVNET In the Works · · Score: 1

I have been declaring this to friends for over a year: Microsoft and its 'operating systems' are the biggest threat to American cyber security. If the virii and worms of the past summer and the slow response of Microsoft to address bugs, holes, and macro languages wasn't a wake up call to this country, what will be? Frankly, Microsoft could be brought up for treason for their lack of foresight on security issues. Microsoft's arrogance has opened large holes to be exploited. Their greed may cost America.

You want to protect America from cyber attacks, get to one of the roots of the problem, Microsoft's operating systems, their web servers, their macro-enabled Outlook email programs, and their word processing programs. They can cry that they are the focus of attack. Well, perhaps they ought to think that way and produce more secure, more thought out products.

  12. Why can't American learn? on Mars Orbiter Lost Over Metric Conversion Error · · Score: 1

One thing I do not understand is why America cannot LEARN something new? Every generation is introduced to SI (or the Metric system) with promises that America will start using SI. Yet, have we? Instead, Americans will not go to a global standard. So, we spent some $100+ on a spacecraft. How much more does America waste because we use a measurement system that no one else uses? Frankly, I give Bill Clinton credit for the latest setback in not adopting the metric system. Remember back in '94, all highway signs were to have both miles and kilometers. Oh, no, it's too expensive and Clinton stopped the plan. Well, 5 more years have passed away. Does it have to be 20 or 100 years? America gradually slides from its greatness because Americans can't change.
