I can't stand the rest of Disney's lineup, but that show is one of my favorite pieces of television ever. A light and pleasantly self-aware show where the protagonists build fantastic things to enjoy and play with? All the fun of Family Guy without the grossness and empty cynicism? Yes, more please.

leaving the dev to sputter "but, but, you're not supposed to do that".

My favorite quote on this subject: "If there is a button there, somebody is going to push it." Over and over again, I have been surprised by users who have put normally safe options together in ways that result in disaster. As a developer, it is my responsibility to make sure that the self destruct button is NOT right next to the refresh button, and that the self-destruct button has an obvious warning message before the countdown starts. Even though user insanity is not something you can test for, you can minimize its impact with an effective user interface design.

Unit testing has saved my ass numerous times. One test in particular pumps a bunch of random data into the system and writes out every possible output format with said random data. Garbage in, garbage out, but its repeatable garbage, and each release establishes a baseline for these output files. Prior to the next release, I repeat the test, and diff the output against the baseline. Any changes that can't be attributed to fixes in the new release are bugs that need to be tracked down. This test is good for catching problems from small code changes that ripple to unintended places.

  21. Re:People who cheat should blame themselves, not F on Facebook, Friend of Divorce Lawyers · · Score: 3, Insightful

"Cheating" is called cheating for a reason. Cheating is breaking the rules. In marriage, there are a number of rules, some traditional (the vows), some legal (pre-nups, adultery, alienation of affection), but most of the rules are agreed upon by the spouses (you take out the trash, and I do the laundry).

If the spouses agree to an open marriage, then sex with other partners is not cheating. By agreement, the rules allow for it. In this context cheating is when you do something that you said you wouldn't do.

In which case it is breaking your word that is causing all the trouble, and that could be on sex, but also on a lot of other things.

    Agreed.

    There are no simple answers.

I respectfully disagree. The simple answer is "Keep Your Word", or even more simply "Don't Be an Asshole".

It may violate your ethics, moral guidelines, religion or what-have-you. But it is not stupid.

Cheating is not about ethics or morals or religion. It's not even about sex. Its about your commitment (or lack thereof) to your spouse, and to all of the other people in your marriage (kids, in-laws, parents, neighbors, etc.). And if you are not smart enough to find an acceptable outlet for your biological urges, I would have to say that's pretty stupid.

Ummm, yeah, that's what marriage IS. Everybody's not cut out for it. If you want to play the field, don't get married.

(or have your marriage broken with the person being 'cheated on' getting all your money).

Working with computers, we deal with hard facts, boolean truth values. Separating what we know from what we don't know is a large portion of this job. Therefore, being right about what you do and do not know is important.

To me personally, being right is so important that I will admit when I am wrong, so I can be right about that.

I realize that my experience is not typical. I learned reasonably early in life to put little stock in other peoples opinions of me and my actions, largely because the opinions of others are non-deterministic with respect to my actions. I did not realize it at the time, but by doing so I freed myself from the burden of lifelong guilt and shame. Over the last couple of years, I have been able to see the difference that this freedom has made in my point of view, and it really is astounding.

The stigma of mistakes in Eastern culture is not absent from Western culture, just more subtle.
