I am curious what kind of person that refuses to take five minutes to do a check that improves computer performance for free. Even if you don't need all the performance the computer can give you, why make it worse than you have to?

I wonder if these are people that are too lazy to take their car in for a routine oil change? Computers require regular maintainance too.

Ick. I never like it when people sacrifice usability for looks, especially tacky looks.

The fact that it's hard to spot the scrollbars is irrelevant - same as using microscopic font sizes - they just tell you to "get glasses, grandpa".

I think being condescending like this is a bad idea. In fact, ignoring good graphics design is a bad idea, and they are in the wrong for it. Black-on-black (or otherwise poor contrast) scroll bars, if they are done, is being stupid, the same with tiny font sizes. There are reasons why there are sensible font sizes that have nothing to do with old age. Thankfully, some web programs allow the user to set the minimum font size that overrides that garbage.

What is wrong with a wikipedia page about a fake artist, as far as some people are concerned (see earlier slashdot article about mmorpg) there actually is/will be no difference between reality and what is found on the internet, so in those terms the BBC is actually ahead of the game.

What I see could be wrong about it is that the people that let other people write reality like this would have less of a leg to stand on when they complain about "W's" revisionism or the revisionism of any company or government. Hey, if people on the Internet can try to write things in and out of existence, then why not "W"? Unfortunately, the consequences in my example are staggering.

It's not the first computer to use ducting.

Or the Compaq Personal Workstation SP750, which was made in 1997. The computer is a dual Xeon-capable design for up to 550MHZ, multiple high-RPM SCSI drives and uses only two quiet high-flow low velocity 120mm fans, one "duct" for the CPUs and video, the other "duct" for the drives and power supply.

I have since bought two Compaq W8000 computers. It is a computer based on the same case, but designed around the extended ATX standard. It has three ducts, drive/power supply, CPU (up to two 2.8GHz Xeons) and the PCI/AGP card section.

I like the overall design of the Powermac G5s, but with mine, when the CPU use gets over 30% for a sufficient amount of time, the fans emit an annoying high pitch whine. My x86 machines may emit more overall noise, they are a very low turbulence rumble that is a lot more tolerable.

One thing that annoys me about some ads, is they say "in the future...", make some claims about good things, then say "...the future is now".

I also find medical ads annoying. They all seem to push a perception that things will be great if you'd take this pill or have that operation. Stuff like Viagra, Levitra and Claria are only supposed to be help people with certain medical conditions, NOT to make a healthy person have "better sex". I think mass marketing is completely wrong for that kind of product, and targeted mass marketing is also going to cause problems.

What I heard was that he wanted to discredit alternating current (AC) power, and electrocuting animals was his way of doing it. Edison favored direct current (DC) power. The problem is that given the technology of the time, and it is still largely true today, due to the physics involved, AC is generally a better long-distance electrical power transmission method.

I'm not sure how stable Tesla was, but he was right about AC.

Solely "delivering" by web page would defeat the point and make it harder to get. I don't think you've actually taken the time to notice that most podcasts are also "delivered" by a plain vanilla web page, but that is beside the point.

What RSS does is enables a person to use a program to automatically download the latest recordings from all their RSS subscriptions, automatically put it in their audio library and automatically put them on their portable audio player whenever it is docked. I use a "Most Recently Added" playlist to listen to the latest stuff.

I'd say, if it works well and is competitive, does the age of the original design really matter? Keep in mind that the core if the Pentium M is heavily re-factored in terms of the overall logic design, improved branch prediction and so on. Making something completely new for its own sake isn't a worthy goal unless there are sufficient benefits versus the cost of such a design.

For all I know, the Athlon64 core might have as much similarity with the core of the Nexgen 5x86 chip as the Pentium M might have with the original Pentium Pro. AMD had trouble designing their own CPU core, so they bought Nexgen's know-how to do this, so there is at least a definite lineage.

It is pretty tough to do a clean-sheet re-implementation, I think a lot of times you might end up redoing the same work that was already done.
