Bricking only happens with unlocked phones, third party apps had nothing to do with it, those apps were hidden from view. The assertion of deliberate is conjecture. They may have but we might never know until people pick apart the update. It _is_ possible to reverse the "bricking" and restore it to a previous firmware, so I'm not sure if it's a true bricking or not.

The original PS2 didn't have a network jack but you could buy one and add a hard drive. The ability to add a hard drive was removed later, with a top-loading slimmer model, but with a network jack, I think. There's an even slimmer, lighter model that was introduced later, now available in silver and black. Then there was the Japan-only one that was also a DVR.

I wouldn't count it out completely, I remember people saying that PS2 was going to be a big flop too. Right now, it's only nine months in.

Everything is a trade-off though. Many resources may be abundant, but there always have restrictions, there will always be a limiting factor somewhere. Extracting resource A might take Y amount of work, and resource B might take X amount of work, and those resources may not be equivalent in many ways. There is also an amount of time needed to extract them. The resources that you need take energy to move from where they are to where you need them to be. How do you propose to balance all of these?

I am very skeptical that somehow a spacefaring civilization will be able to counter all of that and not have some form of currency. Even something like synthesizing elements wouldn't be very efficient because it would waste a lot of energy in the process, even with fusion power, there's a tremendous inefficiency there. As such, I think eliminating poverty would be about as easy as changing innate human nature - something that I don't think has been repeatably done or done very well.

I think this initiative is a sad joke though.

Most of the cartel's music is not that good anyways. I think slashdotters should take the stance that the music files aren't worth the drive space they are on and not even worth copying.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that HDMI is totally immune to signal loss, but there should be a limit in how much you need to spend on them. I paid $50 for a 50ft HDMI cable from Monoprice.com and it has worked flawlessly so far, and this is for 1080p video signal to a 1080p video projector. $60 6ft HDMI cables are simply, flat-out absurd. For runs 2 meters or less, I'd suggest buying the cheapest or next-to-cheapest ones you can get, and if you see glitching, then return them and pay a little more.

It does not make much sense to pay several dollars a foot for "future proofing" your cables. That's money spent on something that depreciates anyway, it's better to save the difference spend that money 5 years from now if you need it and not get cables now that might be replaced by different connector standard anyway. I'm very skeptical of the future for 1440p, when even the ProjectorCentral people swear that they can't tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p.

Maybe Zune has "n", but the linked story doesn't seem to say so.

Contrast ratio is the brightness of white vs. the brightness of black. Given equal white brightness, it should mean that the black is blacker. Unfortunately, it is a number companies plays tricks with, such as using the brightest the screen gets when all-white at its brightest setting, and the dimmest when it's all black, maybe with backlight dimmed and so on.

Frankly, I'm not missing my CRT much. I even had high end consumer displays, 21" flats. I hated how the geometry gradually shirts over time, I hated fixing geometry problems, and the brightness of black varied by how many and how bright other things are on the screen. And the local magnetic fields made it wobble, so I had to put the Hz such that it's in cadence with power because of a nearby fan in the A/C ducts. Off-angle color is dependent on the LCD substrate. The Dell Ultrasharps do use the kind of LCD that's better for that.

For entertainment, I'm using a 1080p LCD projector. There aren't any color shift issues due to off-angle viewing with that. The colors are great and the black is quite black.
