You really can't limit term of copyright to the author's lifetime. People work for companies that fund their work in exchange for a regular salary. This would bind the value of the work to the age and health of the employee, leading to all sorts of economic pressure to not fund the work of older people.

You did not answer the question. If the 16th amendment is repealed as the Fair Tax web site you link to advocates, the Fair tax that you describe would be just as unconstitutional as the original income tax was because it is not apportioned among the states according to the census.

Look, I am very sympathetic to the idea that taxation is one of the greatest impositions on personal freedom there is in the modern world. But tax reform is barking up the wrong tree. No matter how tax is allocated it is going to gore somebody's ox. AND THE FUNDAMENTAL RULE THAT PEOPLE FORGET IS THAT YOUR TAXES EXACTLY EQUAL WHAT GOVERNMENT SPENDS. It doesn't matter if you write a check for that amount to the government or not. Those tricky guys can just print as much money as they want and spend that, thus reducing the value of your savings (take a look at the trends regarding the value of the dollar). Or they can sell bonds and other instruments of public debt that will bite you in the butt later. Or sell public (i.e. YOUR) assets like land, highways, natural resources or whatever. Or they can create entitlement programs that create 'obligations' that grow without limit even though they sound like a good idea at the time.

Control of and reduction of government spending is the only true act of tax reform that matters. Everything else is just moving the pain from one place to another.

I am sorry, but I am familiar with IP laws in most of the rest of the developed world. I have 12 patents in my name that have been issued in multiple countries. Japan is actually more lenient in granting patents than the US. The EU is a little more strict but not much. In other areas (copyright) most countries have either a 50 year or 70 year post-mortem copyright period. The US is not at all unusual with it's 70 year period.

Yes China's situation is a bit different as a developing nation but it is rapidly becoming normalized with the rest of the world as they are starting to develop their own "imaginary property". They are now a member of WIPO, the Paris convention, the Madrid Agreement and have a State Patent and Trademarks office. While enforcement is spotty the trend is obvious.

Any claim that the US economy isat a disadvantage due to IP laws is hooey.

  24. Re:Oh the humanity on Weak US Dollar Means Nintendo Favors Europe For Now · · Score: 5, Insightful

That is absurd. The US has been running deficit budgets (to pay for wars) and balance of payments for decades. Consumers have not been saving; in fact the rate of savings in the US is negative.

Other parts of the world with strong economies have IP laws that are just as strong as in the US and are doing fine.

It is all about unwise fiscal policies that are resulting in the decline of the dollar.
