1) When taking the first post, remember to make it relatively short ( you can't have anybody else beat you to the punch, can you?) 2) Make sure you have at least one thing mispelled. you don't want to look like you've had a first post typed up on notepad forever waiting for the right time. 3) make sure you have a clever subject that will get by the Slashdot topic bots. ( "EFF PEE" works well). 4) Make sure you use "sux0r" and "rox0r" in your post. It will give others the impression you are "1337" 5) Declare yourself as the greatest, simply on the fact that you have the first post. 6) Give a count of how many FP's you have. 7) make sure you include a link to goatse.cx Having followed these guidelines, a true first post would look like this:

Comes the concrete case competition. I think it just *might* become something feasable. after all, we've got collegiate engineering student with nothing better to do (well, there's CS, but then again, that can be done in lieu of classwork, IMHO) this competition could become something a lote more fun, too. If anybody wants to take this idea and run with it, feel free.

yeah, so are all of us who entered college in computer scinece programs before 'Dubya got elected.
Funny thing is though, a lot of us have the same aspirations. I had nearly the same list of things to do, but the custom case I dea never entered my mind until I saw the may 2001 issue of maximum PC, where they had step-by-step instructions on how to customize a case. I thought it was actually a very worthwhile article, and I ended up using it to mod out several pieces of hardware, including my netgear ethernet switch, my cases, and my data switch.
If you ask me the customized cases are going to be big, and i think that anybody that can do them, and do them well could end up making a killing doing so. (Alienware for example. not totally customized, but very close to it).

Here, though, I think that the idea is to have the wireless controllers coming standard with the game console. I think that any of us who have ever had a regular ninentdo, SNES, Genesis, or any other console can remember the problems with the cords, and if everything was wireless from the get go, It would make for a much nicer video gaming experience. Imagine sittng back in the recliner with the controlloer, and playing on the 32" Screen, and not having to worr that somebody is goin to trip on a wire and send things crashing down. I seriously think that if they started making these SPIKE controllers standard on video game systems, it could definitely increse sales, not to mention the great stuff that people would eventually create as a result.
I don't know what's up, but the system has chosen a friend of mine to moderate posts twice in the last 4 days. I'm trying to figure out what's up there, but at the same time, he's not complaining.
I just thought of another improve ment that could increase the amount of data transfer that the pigeons could carry: if you could figure out a way to get the pigeon to Carry a CD-R, Zip disk or the like, you could transfer much larger packets.

I Think the best thing anybody can do to prepare for DSL or any other broadband is to check out DSLReports and read about the providers available in your area, along with the good, the bad, and the horror stories about DSL. It's very helpful, and after you have your DSL service, you can run diagnostics on it, and see where it stacks up, so you can decide if you want to change services. It was a big help for me, because when I'm home form college, I've got the option of Either roadrunner or Comcast@home along with DSL from BellSouth, so I had to find out where i'd get the best bandwidth for my money. I hope this helps some people.
Not only major Corps, but also educational institutions, especially college, as well. Towards the end of last semester, I, along with a few other people commandeered a lab after hours and staged a nice lan party for a thursday night. To prevent cheating, we had a friend that works there pre-install the games (Mostly Half-life: counter-strike, and Quake 3) for us, and then we all just quietly came in and played for a few hours on the nice net work. Because the university doesn't like the games, they have the machines set up to ghost once a week (every friday), so with our planning, there was no trace that we really were there. Thank goodness for Ghosting and lab images...
Linux isn't as hackable as you think. The idea behind linux is that it is designed to be a very veratile operating system. Linux is able to be configued for high security, a prime example is secure socket layering with linux machines, along with this, linux is also able to be used as an insecure workstation for advanced users. From a corporate stand point, this actually makes linux look very good, because, when configured properly, linux offers some of the best security around. Yes, linux is inherrently hackable, but look at its roots. Linux has grown because of the group the main stream terms as hackers, though this is often a misnomer, as hacker has the negative connotation that many of us in the linux community try to distance ourselves from. On the other hand, linux's hackability is an advantage, becuase of the fact that with linux, any time new updates are released, they can generally be quickly put into place, often without a reboot of the server, saving time, as well as reliability that so many internet users want.
As far as embedded linux goes, the uses that i've seen for it make me want to use it as often as possible, especially with the linux embedded bios chips that i've read about allowing for faster workstation booting, as well as smoother allocation of resources on linux machines, which all-in-all is something I think all of us would like.
While the head movements aren't very precise, the eye move ments are. Here at Clemson, in the VR lab, they're working on eye tracking, and form what I've seen, it's very effective. Instead of movine your head to move the mouse or your head to move the cross hiars, could you think of how great it would be to be able to just have your eyes look at something, and be right on target to start firing. Then those little movements that we see out of the corners of our eyes while playing Counter strike and Half life would really turn into more kills. Along with this, think of how it would be just simply being able to use the keyboard to play CS, while your eyes did the target ing for you.
I look at it like this: The nielson rating system (the system that takes samples of families at random, and hooks up a box to track what a family watches so they can give shows the ratings that advertisers use to determine the value of commercials on certain shows) does almost exactly the same thing, except it doesn't allow you to pause live TV. I personally like the idea of the data being used to help determine the shows that people watch in given regions, and what people will watch later, as well. By allowing the data to be used, you help make TV better. This is optional, and if it makes TV better for me, I'm all for it.
What about the movie D.A.R.Y.L.? If I remember the plot from it correct ly, the kid was actually a robot, and the hero in the film. The idea isn't new, but it Is being brought to th surface much more now.
While I do agre that most people do not have the setup for watching DivX;-) Movies. I disagree that themovies are only playable from the Moitor. I have a TV out card, and When I watch the DivX movies I have, I've ofund that using the TVout, and watching the movies on my TV is very nice, with the exception of the lack of a remote control (most likely going to be fixed when I get a wireless keyboard). Otherwise, things are pretty much the same as far as seating goes (the couch in my dorm room), and with compression. I've gotten several Long movies compressed to sizes that give better than VHS quality video and sound, and also fit onto CD-R's. This brings me to my next point. They do have CD-Players that Play MP3s now. What about the concept of a Set-top DivX box? in theory, this could work, and it might work very nicely, if done properly.
The only real problem with that is for people like me who live 6 miles away from BFE and don't own cars to get to the closest brick-and-mortar store. For me, even if the internet purchases were teaxed, I'd still be saving close to 30% over what i would have to pay if I were to go to one of the small businesses located in my town. THanks to the Internet, I get less of the "College town gouging" that is very apparent when I go home and look at how cheap many things are compared to the prices I pay for the things I need immediately and can really only get from one of the businesses here.
On Another note, I'm wondering if things like E-bay would become subject to taxes if the moratorium on internet taxes gets lifted. Any body have any clues?
I think one other thing that might be fairly interesting is the fact that they could use this to send items into permanent orbit around the earth. As I learned in Physics class, all that is needed is a velocity of 8km/s and Then I can send an object into orbit around the earth (This is true because of the effects of gravity vs. the slope of the earth would maintain the orbit). So, if we can have the pellets going at 20 km/s What will they do when they can get bigger things going at this velocity?
I worked on a project doing this in 1998 for Blackbaud In Charleston, SC as a subject for a research thesis. I used QOOLE as my Building tool, and then I converted the BSP files to VRML. Overall, the process was pairly simple.
yeah, maybe we can find an archive of people talking about what a piece of crap windows 1.0 was. might be interesting to see if it had the program has performed an illegal operation and will be teminated.
