  1. University Of New Hampshire on Dorm Storm? · · Score: 1
Well, we've got 2500 wide eyed freshmen showing up two weeks from now, and a brigade of ResNet people around to get them all connected.

To be brutally honest, most of the resnet people are monkeys; fortunatly nowadays you don't need much more than that to get a plug and play ethernet card working on a modern computer with DHCP.

One of my friends, who works for resnet, is going to do his best to convince all the girls he plugs in to let him run a distributed.net client on their computer- under his name, of course. Hell, they don't need a gHz to run Word and Winamp anyway...

But yeah, as a previous poster pointed out, it's a good way to meet girls- Last year I got several girls (and the occasional guy) up and running with an Ethernet card, on a friendly basis, and eventually got to know half of them pretty well.

Often, we see the same things day in and day out on slashdot. Why not use it as an excuse to get drunk?

1.Start around 9am, EST, when it's reasonable to assume hordes of slashdotters will have gotten to work and begun wasting the day trying to get first post on their company's fat pipe. (If you can actually drink at work, post where you work. I'll send my resume)

True, it's greed, but not in the way you imply. It's called an 'entry barrier.' They plan on having a big, popular system, that everybody knows and uses... And they want to keep it to themselves, and their lowest common denominator offerings. But they want to skirt anti-trust issues, so they don't say "Big fatcat companies only", they say "sure, we can talk about having you on MusicNet, always looking for umm... new talent... As long as your company has an extra $750K to throw in the shitter."

I'd imagine most smaller labels and independant artists don't have that kind of money to throw away.

So they have the DOJ shut down everything but their party, and then only let their friends in.

If, on the other hand, they told them that absolutely no software support would be provided with the linux boxes, I'd imagine that would cut the price substantially. I'm guessing Linux tech support people would probably cost more than windows guys, and they've probably fired alot for their condescending tone (which they develop instinctivly after getting as far as figuring out set prompt) when dealing with customers.

Why should I be forced to use it at work, despite my perception of it's inferiority?

Because at work, it's not your computer. If you don't like your company's IT policies, attacking microsofts business practices is an awfully roundabout way to effect change.

Popular music, on the other hand, is usually finding a few people who are cute and can sing a tune, and then providing these dolts with the lowest common denominator of sappy relationship songs, dance steps, and gaudy clothing. See Britney Spears, N'sync, Backstreet Boys, etc... (as a side note, I think that Limp Bizkit is the britney spears of alternative rock- lowest common denominator.)
