  1. Victrola Coffee on The Case for Free WiFi? · · Score: 1

Victrola Coffee in Seattle has a lot of experience with this. They shut off their wifi on the weekends. It might be worth contacting them to find out their thoughts.

  2. Re:I just installed it, and will be rebooting on Microsoft Releases Malicious Software Removal Tool · · Score: 1

It looks like it creates a program called mrt.exe ( This is according to the Microsoft KB Article Deployment of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool in an enterprise environment ). I've looked at the C:\Windows\Debug\mrt.log file which indicates that it ran, and have searched my drive for the mrt.exe file to no avail. It must run, look for spyware on your machine, and then remove itself.

You can extract the mrt.exe file from the release by running :

    Windows-KB890830-ENU.exe /x

And you can get the release from the link in the story.

Then you've got access to it and its command line parameters.

  3. What about everyone who can't create TXT records on Microsoft to Deploy SPF for Hotmail Users · · Score: 1

So my domain is registered through joker.com, the number 13 domain registrar according to State of the Domain. Joker.com's DNS service doesn't provide the ability to create a TXT record. The other name registrar that provides DNS that I've looked into, 1&1, also does not allow TXT records. So do I actually have to find some new DNS provider or run my own DNS server in order to have a TXT record and thereby allow my users to communicate via email to hotmail?!

    Tell me it 'aint so!

  4. Re:John Conyers? on New P2P Battle is Heating Up · · Score: 1

I've got it. We can solve 1/3rd of this problem, if we only had a futuristic killing machine, for argument sake, let's call it a "Terminator", in like 27 years, around 2029 we could send this machine back in time and kill John Conyers thereby defeating the anti P2P legislation.

So I guess this means we have to ban matchbooks now.

Looks like Wil's got a bit of time on his hands these days. Here's his screenplay, shamelessly lifted from memepool. Enjoy.

  7. Cross Site Scripting Hidden Agenda on MS Security: On A Path As Clear As It Is Reliable · · Score: 1

The exploit that Jeremiah Grossman used to hack Hotmail in 1 line of code is cross-site scripting. Here is an interesting article by John Dvorak, about how it is IN Microsoft's interest to publicise the cross-site scripting vulnerability and try to scare internet users away from "promiscuous browsing"

  8. Every quote in this article misses the point on Hack-SDMI Boycott Explored · · Score: 1

Is it just me or did everyone else here notice that the Salon article is written as if it's audience is all the poor and unfortunate technology members of the SDMI. Virtually everyone who read this article was a consumer or hacker whose interests, evidenced by all of the quotes in the article, are in DIRECT opposition to those of the tech members of SDMI.

But there's also concern that if hackers stay away in droves, perhaps one or two of the watermarks won't be broken -- in which case SDMI will steam ahead with its "proven" solution and cost the technology companies millions of dollars in implementation costs.

Those SDMI members who had been secretly hoping that hackers would breeze through the challenge and prove once and for all that SDMI was wasting its time were dismayed. If the system wasn't tested and broken, SDMI would forge ahead and release a solution that many considered fallible.

I think that the author really missed the point if she feels that pointing out all of the harm that SDMI will cause the tech companies will insight us comsumers or hackers to change our view.

Or maybe dissension obliterates the consensus. Whatever the case, hackers who are sure they are doing the right thing for online distribution of music by boycotting the hack-SDMI challenge might want to consider rethinking their stance.

Completely missed the point of the boycott. Ah well.

  9. Re:Brain capacity on Ask Slashdot: Storage Capacity of the Human Brain? · · Score: 1

I think that came from a PBS special, where some kid had hydroenephalitis (water on the brain), and about 90% of his cranial capacity was fluid. He was a mathematical genius.

The "we only use 10% of our brain" urban legend originated from exactly what your refering to. It is a huge misinterpretation of this study. Playtex tampons have asbestos in them and people are putting LSD and strychnine on payphone buttons. Grrrr.
