funkwater loves it when people post discussing themselves in the thrid person, and then later admit to being themselves. It shows funkwater what kind of dishonest person they are in the first place.
Just because this guy is an OSS programmer doesn't mean he's an angel. Hell, I know of at least one other Perl guy that is a convicted felon. Perhaps HMS actually believed that he was misappropriating their trade secrets. Would it then be wrong to have the authorities get involved?
Let the courts decide what really is going on. Let all the facts come out before passing judgement against his employer. Isn't that why we have a judicial system?
That's not the point. The point is now musicians with limited funds have a chance to record something and get it out to people. Of course a lot of it sucks, but then again I bet Britney Spears' recording budget is in the hundreds of thousands, and she's still talentless.
Wrong. I use Total Recorder to "creatively cache" the songs to my iPod. Combine that with an app like Tag&Rename that can figure out what CD a group of MP3 files is and then rename/set tags based on freedb entries, and you're all set.
$9.95/mo well spent.
And, in the few months since I've subscribed to Rhapsody, I've *bought* many more new CDs of new artists I've found by clicking and sampling.
Agreed, this is a killer feature. I use it to follow the war by opening 5 tabs of the top news sites.
It may be possible to hack this in with javascript, but I haven't tried anything with javscript and tabs yet (I'm sure there is no standards here either).
I'll start a SourceForge project this weekend and post it here.
I had the same problem a while back and found nothing worth using, so I wrote one using PHP/MySQL in a few hours. It's your standard tree-like listing, where links are in folders. It's wonderful to have one central repository for all links.
It uses only two tables and has one PHP script to add edit/delete bookmarks.
It's also password protected, so you can keep sensitive info in there and not worry. Also, I made a "sidebar" mode for use in Mozilla.
Plans had included a SOAP interface for making XUL clients or something, but I didn't find a need.
If anyone is interested, especially in making it better, I could start a SourceForge project and get it out there. Let me know if there's any takers.
Maybe a Computer Science major with an interest in cryptography would find this simple, but just try explaining that to my Mom when she can no longer read her email because the computer crashed, and she has to wait a month for the chip manufacturer to burn her a new chip.
The process you describe would require that every PC owner (we're talking hundreds of millions and soon billions) diligently backs up their key and keeps it safe. How can you expect this when most people can't find their car keys? How can you expect my Mom to understand that when she can barely understand how the damned computer works at all?
Humans (and especially us Americans) most often take the path of least resistance. This Palladium crap is definitly not that.
I usually do sales@widget.com since the marketdroids are usually the ones abusing your email address. That way, when they spam me, they actually spam themselves.
I have the same PowerBook as you and Mozilla 0.9.8 is rock solid for me. As is IE 5.5... no 30 second pause ever.
I think your problem is that you are running a non-released beta OS (you did say 10.2, right?). Don't complain about the stability of one app if your entire system is unstable.
Also, OmniWeb, while a noble effort (I even paid for it), is *completely* crappy with JavaScript. Quite dissapointing.
$2500 for an Apple Cinema display is *extremely* low. I bought mine in December for $4,000, which was the going rate then. A month after I bought it they dropped it to $3,000 and now to $2,500.
But guess what.. it was worth every damned penny. It is the most beautiful display I've seen. Don't knock it till you try it, Taco, which is exactly what you tell people about your favorite tech items (cough*debian*cough).
And yes, I play Quake III on this thing and it looks pretty damned good. This isn't no 1995 laptop monitor.
I'd recommend investing in some good audio hardware for your existing computer. I'm referring to audio processing cards that do the processing off of your PC's CPU on their own dedicated DSP chips.
I recommend DigiDesign ProTools. ProTools can be a bit expensive, but the time you'd save inventing a solution and actually making music would be worth it.
ProTools is really 2 things -- hardware AND software. ProTools the hardware is a few PCI cards that have "farms" of DSP processors, integrated SCSI, etc. It also consist of 24-bit analog-digital converter boxes.
ProTools, the software is as good and better in some ways than Cubase, plus supports TDM plug-ins. These plug-ins can emulate amplifiers, run high powered reverb (like LexiVerb), etc. and they do it on the ProTools hardware, which means you can run 8 times the effects, or some really really high end effects, all in in real-time (so you can tweak them up to the very last mixdown)
There are a few other software packages that support ProTools -- MOTU Digital Performer, Emagic Logic Audio, and Cakewalk Pro.
ProTools is the stuff that all the MTV-esque bands are using -- from Limp Bizkit to Britney Spears (who may suck but have great sound).

No I don't work for DigiDesign.. I don't even own any of their ProTools gear, I just know it's the best. I own a Digi001 - a nice intro to hard disk based recording (under $1000) http://www.digi001.com
Has NASA been watching too many kid sci-fi movies from the 80's?
They must be set back in their efforts without River Phoenix's computer program!
Palm IIIxe + StarTAC = Cheap wireless internet
on
The new Palm VIIx
·
· Score: 1
I recently bought a Palm IIIxe (~$150) and a Motorola StarTAC ($229 less $50 rebate). I realized a few days after I got the StarTAC that it can be used as a modem, as long as you have the right cable.
Sprint charges $99 for the "Sprint PCS Wireless Web Connection Kit" - their stupid Windows-only dial-up software and the StarTAC-to-DB9 serial cable. Not wanting their software, I searched around and found just the cable for $50 from ephones.com, but since I didn't want a 10 foot hotsync-to-db9-to-gender_bender-to-db9-to-startac cable dangling from my hip, and I am not good at splicing cables, I custom-ordered an 18" Palm Hotsync-to-StarTAC cable for a mere *cough* $85 from SyncableSolutions.com. A few bucks for a job well done is alright.
With the cable plugged into the Palm and the StarTAC, I just dial-up my local ISP account via a PPP connection and my Palm is on the web. Sure, it's only 14.4kbps, but I only paid the one-time fee of $85 for this new wireless Palm (ok, ok, plus the SprintPCS voice minutes I use while online).
Works great with KBrowser (WAP browser) and ProxyWeb (neat image reducing proxy service for Palm).
How can Metallica complain about any theft when, according to the biography on their own website, they stole the name "Metallica" from Ron Quintana. Does Metallica pay any royalties to Mr. Quintana for the use of his artistic creation?
They also claim to have stolen a U-Haul truck in order to drive to New York. Isn't that grand theft, a felony offense?
How does stealing their own band name and a truck from other people differ from people stealing music?
My girlfriend is an art student, and has several writing intensive classes this semester. Last night, while typing a paper, she lost a lot of steam due to how complicated MS Word is to use and understand conceptually (She had problems with adding footnotes where several of them reference the same source. Word munged her paper up pretty bad.)
After seeing how frustrated it was for a non-technical person to use Word, I realized it is really not the right tool for her and others like her. Aside from the fact that Word is not just for typing up essays and is more a tool for advanced publishing / business folks, etc.
Is there a good (preferably cheap/free to students) general word processor out there, with a good number of features (we just want footnotes, we don't need to embed the damn thing in a web page) but is *really* simple to learn and use?
I thought about MS Works, but I hate the lesser-of-two-evils deal.
Update: It's finally available via circuit city for $855 (not cheap).
The TomTom GO 700 will do the same thing as an all-in-one portable unit. I can't wait for this thing to come out (eta last month).

Ok.. dumb joke. So shoot me.

That site is missing the Metallica "Black Album" (the one with "Enter Sandman").
Is this because the album's so bad no one is pirating it?

My cordless telephone says it's "2 gigahertz". Since 2 is greater than 1, that means my phone is faster than those new chips! Top that Intel and AMD!
