I agree that unless you use prelinking the system won't be noticably faster than any other distro. And prelinking won't help all packages at that.

I can't argue against using something that's firmilar but if you know what you're doing, if you've used one distro you've used them all. If you think that compiling everything from tarballs and solving dependancy problems on your own isn't that hard, why is it so hard to switch to another distro?

The portage system is way better than downloading tarballs and trying to resolve dependecy problems yourself (downloading more tarballs and ./configure, etc., etc.) I doubt you could install any program faster with tarballs versus a simple emerge install [program], as emerge finds all the dependancies, downloads and compiles them for you, and you don't have to worry about configuration.

Gentoo is the first distro that I've used (although Debian comes close) that really makes it easy to install and use almost ANY program out there for Linux. Even if the source you need to compile is not in the portage tree, it's really easy to emerge all the dependancies that you need to make the source work. I'm speaking from experience here, I've used Slack (since almost 8 years ago), Debian, Mandrake, RedHat/Fedora, and even with tools like apt and yum I can't make every piece of software work without a lot of hassle. So portage really does make Gentoo shine, IMO.

I'm not advocating shooting anyone and I agree that the average Joe shouldn't just go out and buy a weapon and attempt to defend himself with it. I've had hours of training (in the neighborhood of 700), even then you can only train yourself to a point to remain calm in those situations, and there is always the adrenaline factor. Most people can't remain clam and rational when being mugged.

Honestly, if I were mugged while carrying my iPod and gun (which would never happen), most likely I would give up the iPod (only a 10GB model) and try as hard as possible to keep the mugger from getting my gun (worth about 3 times as much). But really, I don't carry a gun with me unless I'm headed to the range or out hunting. You're not a troll you have good points. It's not a comforting fact that your average citizen can walk into a store and walk out with a handgun and ammo (assuming they don't have a criminal record) with no real training on the use of the weapon.

However, there are things you do every day, driving a car for instance, that you take for granted. Driving a 3500lb car around in a reckless manner and endangering the lives of others on the road is tantamount to waving a loaded gun around, IMHO. You have bad days when you drive, and you have to make split second decisions when you're driving that can have a serious impact on more than a few people. Again, most people take this for granted. Given cars aren't designed as weapons, but they could be, and extremely destructive ones at that.

So to answer your question, yes, I do think about these things. In another reply in this thread, I said basically the same thing; you always have to consider the consequences of your actions. If I pack a weapon, be it a knife, gun, or even my fists, I try to be as rational in my responses to situations as I can be, but I am human and so is everyone else who carries a weapon. A great example of what you are talking about is police shootings. These are (supposedly) highly trained individuals, and it happens that they have killed innocent people with incorrect judgment, bad days, etc.

I have had extensive training with firearms (around 700hrs at a shooting range). I've been around guns my entire life. I don't take the power of my firearms for granted just as I don't take the power of a vehicle on a roadway for granted. I made the parent post mostly as poke at England. I don't usually carry a gun, and would not take a chance on getting myself killed by an armed mugger for an iPod. Oh, and as an aside, I'm a really calm dude, I've been in ONE fight in my entire life in high school defending myself from a bully dickhead (I've had my house broken into once, but my family and I weren't even there), I'm not some power hungry dick who carries a gun because it makes me feel good about myself, in fact I rarely carry a gun at all unless I'm headed to the range or the mountains to hunt.

    Thanks for the tip, but...

First off, you obviously don't live in Texas. You can shoot people for a lot of things there, including stealing your car (assuming they're on your property).

Second, you're making a lot of assumptions about my personality and the way would react in a situation like this. You've never had any gun training or you would know that you aren't taught to shoot people in the *back* while they are running from you.

There's nothing wrong with protecting yourself, whether it be hand-to-hand combat training, pepper spray, or a gun, but I will agree you have to be ready for the consequences of your actions (you might get hurt or killed, you may end up in jail). I'm certainly not the dipshit redneck you seem to think I am, and I don't think it's kosher to kill anyone.

I'm not captain courageous vigilante out there kicking ass and shooting people who steal iPod's (or wallets whatever), but if someone attacks me, they may have to deal with me.

Besides, they are open source so you could port them to just about any OS if you really wanted to, so you're post can apply to any operating platform out there.

I don't know what area of IT (or if you work in IT at all) you work in but it isn't in a UNIVERSITY setting like the one I was describing. We do have a PC (read Wintel) administration wing but the vast majority of the computers doing the workload (and using sysadmin tools like Nmap and Ethereal) are running OS X, AIX, BSD, and Solaris. I work for the the IT department for a reasearch university in New Mexico (yea, laugh now but our U pulls in loads of reasearch money and we have one of the top Engineering schools in the country and we're in the top 50 in Computer Science) and we have widespread use of OS X, mainly in OS X Server but you would be surprised at the ammount our of sys admins running Macs with OS X (our entire NOC is running OS X as admin computers). It's a great combination of useablility (i.e. MS Office and UNIX Sys Admin tools nmap, ethereal, etc.) that just doesn't happen in the Windows environment. And yes, I realize you aren't talking about system administration, you are talking about end users.

I'm not sure what types of software that you were running but they must have been extremely poorly written. I mean OS X crashing more than ME?!? Come on, give me a break, I don't recall ever seeing a BSOD on a OS X (maybe the swirl that never ends) but if you know anything about *NIX in general, you can kill -KILL (PID) any process that is causing problems. Your comparison of Max OS X in general to ME is almost absurd as ME is based on partly on technology from the old DOS days, where OS X has compatability with classic, but the underpinnings are not the same. A much better comparison would be NT/2000/XP to OS X, but even there the reliability is not the same.

I personally have a Mac running panther, along with 2 PCs, one (sadly requied) running Windows XP and one running Linux. My current uptime (not max, which is 66 days) on my Mac is 34 days (the MAX uptime i've ever had on my XP machine is 22 days), and security reboots aside I've never had a crash, lockup or any other problem with OS X. I can't say the same for any Windows operating system I've ever run, although with XP my reboots are occuring with less frequency. And NO I'm not a Mac fanboy, I really prefer working on my Linux system, Mac comes in at a close second. And working in IT for 12 years, Mac's are, if not the easiest to deal with, they are close. No wonder you post as AC, but the fact that you're post was modded up shows that those with mod points are on crack.
