  1. I moved into a mediocre neighborhood in LA, and for $60 a month I have 50mbps (promised and measured) service that includes the use of a Motorola SurfBoard modem/router/WAP/gigEswitch gizmo. Seems OK to me.

    There is a way to make this much less distracting if one practices it, and it applies to other things we should be doing like looking in our mirrors as well. Glance at the mirror or instrument and immediately look back ahead. Our brain can figure out what we saw after the fact without us fixating on the scene.

    If the state of the brain is the same, and the input is the same, I'd need some proof that the output won't actually be the same. Previous experience can alter present state, and this is true whether the brain is artificial or human. Complexity beyond our ability to presently analyse is not proof of non-determinism as such.

    We need speeding laws to be set at reasonable values and then enforced to the letter. The core issue in this whole conundrum is simply that we are cultivating a culture where virtually everyone is afraid to see a policeman. That's messed up.

    It can faithfully record all the signal below the Nyquist threshold in both examples. As long as that threshold is high enough, the ear can't tell the difference. TL;DR; - they both sound like a 22KHz sine wave to your ear anyway.

    It could also just mean that they bumped the analog gain of the pre-A/D converter signal amplifiers on the chip up as compared to the previous shots.

    Canon EOS can accept any major lens (with appropriate adapter) due to a slightly shorter focal plane to mounting plane distance than other mounts. Connecting all the electronic-AF/AE wizardry is a separate issue.

    The second story is specifically about Da Vinci robots, which were supposed to revolutionize medicine by being able to perform the whole surgery automatically.

    Actually the Intuitive Surgical DaVinci robots are not autonomous at all and are not FDA approved for anything except thoracic procedures, not joint work. You are apparently confusing them with much simpler robots that help guide the application of joint replacement operations.

    There's a lot of value to going COTS of course, and commonly available LiPo technology is so power dense that the idea of sending power down is probably moot for most applications anyway. Just wanted to point out that the problem of DC loop voltage drop has been solved long ago.

    Well it's not "an idea", it's been done for years, it's called a remote sensing DC power supply and it's commonly used in industrial applications and robotics, much like this. Not like I dreamed it up or something. The complexity is the same as for the regulated supply you would need anyway, and CAT5 has a spare set of conductors just waiting to be used. In fact the reason this is done is because it's simple and efficient. Google it and look at the numerous engineering papers out there for remote sensing DC power supply.

    With 4 wires you can deliver the current capacity of one set of wires at an accurate supply voltage, in this case you should be able to deliver your 0.5 amp at any supply voltage you like up to the limits of the CAT5/6 insulation.
