The MS Media Center PC's do a pretty good job of this out of the box, plus they will let you play back all sorts of other formats that this thing won't.
What would make this cool would be putting this functionality on NIC's and network devices. NIC's have gotten to be so cheap that really the cost difference between the compression card and the compression card + integrated NIC would be negligable and this would solve the PCI bandwidth issue.
GIVE UP ON THE BS OIL ARGUMENT. The two countries where Iraqi oil matters are France and Russia, WE DON'T BUY IRAQI OIL. Oil dependance helps explain France and Russia's positions better than it does ours.
I think that may be the first time I have heard NPR described as a neutral news source.

MOD THIS GUY UP! We need more people in the US to remember that no matter who holds the title, respect is still required. The term 'treason' is not used nearly enough anymore.
Cheap gear + cheap wires = bad sound. This is why people spend thousands on higher quality audio gear. My best suggestion is return the junky equipment and go to a hi-fi stereo shop in your area (NOT someplace like Best Buy) and get some good gear. If that is not an option, consider just buying higher-quality shielded speaker cable. Regarding the constant hum you are hearing, that is probably not interference from a radio station, but rather it is probably from AC power. Make sure you don't have any switching power supplies nearby and then make sure that your power cables for and signal cables (stereo interconnects, speaker wire) cross at right angles only. If you remember high school physics, you should quickly remember why. Finally, crappy AC power will cause hums as well. Real enthusiasts usually have a dedicated power line for all their audio gear plus a power conditioner/rebuilder, but since that sort of a solution will cost around $2000-$10000, you might buy a cheap power conditioner meant for a computer. They suck in relative terms, but they might help in your situation.

That Bush comment was the first of its type that I have ever seen by one of the slashdot maintainers and I am saddened to see it. It leaves me with no choice but to no longer visit slashdot. Slashdot has never in my recollection been used for partisan political discussion, but has rather always been issue based. Sorry to see the change.
I have used Haskell a lot but usually use Java. I find that Haskell is a bit hard to use for massive projects but for prototyping and testing ideas it is hard to beat. You can test ideas in functional languages in a couple minutes rather than hours.
I am reminded of Neil Stephenson's comment in Diamond Age about an untraceable communication protocol being the thing that made it impossible for tax collection agencies like the IRS to trace transactions and thereby bring down our current political/social model.
I think the best point you make is the future division between the modified elite and the natural masses. It could well create an unbridgible gap where genetic modification will secure a child a much better job in the future allowing them to modify their children, and so on and so forth. The other issue would be wealth in that the genetic enhancements would certainly increase life span thus allowing a person to accumulate more wealth before passing it on to their children.
Those petitions are used to get an issue onto the actual ballot, they are not a vote in and of themselves. This just means that more items could show up on your ballot.

The FBI has learned about this squid and are planning on interogating it to determine if it is connected to Al Quaida.
And I still don't have my army of genetically engineered Armadillo warriors.

Far too true - RedHat is like Windows with all the downsides and none of the upsides.
Lets not forget that IBM, who really controls Java as much as Sun nowadays, is not in the W3C at all.
Try again, it is the WS choreography group.

Only those with actual trators to the US on the board - see info on the Gore - China connection for details.
... and that is why Microsoft is now considered the lesser of the evils.
