Well stated, and I particularly agree with your sentiments regarding ST:TMP. When it came out, I watched it on the big screen 7 times before it left the theatres, and enjoyed it immensely every time. I found it to be fresh, insightful, and thought-provoking, while supplying mind-boggling special effects (for the time), in most cases superior to those seen in a movie called Star Wars that had been released 2 years prior.

  6. Re:Bad timing. on Obama Wants Broader Internet Wiretap Authority · · Score: 1

This is not only heinous, but ridiculous. The "back door" keys are to be held by the corporations that produce the encryption software, so you can safely assume that these keys WILL be compromised and used by criminals to decrypt your legitimate communications and steal your data. You will no longer be able to presume (if you do now, that is ;-) that your online banking activities, for example, are safe because of the use of SSL.

And what about encrypted peer-to-peer networks? Many of these are open source (Freenet and GnuNet spring to mind), so who is going to hold the keys for these? Obviously the government would have to hold those keys themselves, but then how do you compile the programs without having access to the backdoor keys?

This travesty will undoubtedly be enacted, because the sheep will all chant the "terrorism" mantra. Those of us who care should at least write our congress-critters and let them know what we think, however.

You're right - it's NOT flamebait. None of the Nvidia drivers have worked right for me since the 30.xx series. Sure, the 40.xx drivers are faster, but they make most OpenGL games unplayable because they don't render a lot of stuff correctly. Who wants to shoot gray-and-white Gnaars?!? And jeez, WTF hasn't Nvidia gotten the refresh-rate problem fixed yet? 60Hz?!?!? When was the last time you saw someone with a friggin' GeForce4 running with a monitor that only supports 60Hz? Luckily there are some 3rd-party registry patch utilities that'll let you fix the refresh rate problem, but egad, this should be built in to the drivers!

Here's an easier way: Set up a Zebedee tunnel between your work and home machine (http://www.winton.org.uk/zebedee/). It compresses and encrypts all traffic. Zebedee is open-source, and there are compiled versions for Linux and Windows. I've been using it to tunnel between WinNT and Win2K machines for about a year now, and it works great.
