With a publicly held competition, we might even find a company that does space travel better and cheaper (read: less expensive!) than NASA. Mind you I don't have anything against the men in white, but it stands to reason that if you have two or more companies vying for the same end results, they're going to try and find the best way possibly to acheive that with the least possible impact upon their own resources.

I've been in the technical workforce for over 15 years and one of the things I've learned:
There are two bad things in the industry: Engineers and Managers. Why are they bad? Because they have power but no brains. They have knowledge but absolutely no common sense. They expect things done their way, but have no concept of the real world way of getting it done.
If you enjoy that pain, I would like to suggest staring at the arc when someone is arc-welding. You won't feel anything at first but after a few hours your eyes will burn like someone poured salt into 'em! OH, what a feeling.
(personal disclaimer: I did not do this intentionally, just tapped the rod to the metal just a moment quicker than I could nod the hood down. Don't try this at home...) --
Don't just dismiss QA because nothing you've ever done was important enough to need it...
Um, just 'cause you pushed me there, I am a Field Engineer for a Semiconductor Equipment Company and responsible for millions of dollars of product and equipment. QA is very crucial for what I do, so I believe I am right in my thoughts.
Next time, do your homework before you play with flames.
This is the ignorant, closed-minded thinking that will prevent the human species from advancing to the next level of technology.
Robots DO NOT take jobs from people in factories, they are there to free up the intelligent people from the tedious and repetitive tasks normally done by labor. If you feel a job is taken from you by a robot, then you obviously should be enhancing your mentality and researching ways to even further the technology; always stay one step ahead of technology!
It sounds odd, but I actually look forward to the day when Robots are accepted as a part of society. Only then will I have respect for the Human Race. --
This is the kind of bullshit thinking that drives companies out of America and to the waiting hands of Countries that welcome them for being just a company.
In a twisted way, you can say your thinking is distant cousin to all the extremely ignorant political-correctedness that is weakening America's position as a major country and quite frankly, making it the laughing stock of the world.
You want something that you can develop and change for yourself, yet you want a warranty or guaranty that it will work just like you expect it to... COME ON! At very least, where's your pioneering spirit? Do you also want to climb Mount Everest but expect someone to guaranty that you will not fall or hurt yourself in any way?
Stop whining and release your creative spirit! If it doesn't work like you want it to, then add the code that enables it do sing or dance for you!
Ok, enough whining! Do you think you're problems are different from, say an Auto mechanic? Hmmm, seems to me that you can pretty much use all those items that you listed, except for the changing of a few nouns, and you pretty much have the same lament as most of the other service trades.
Look, you get paid to do a job, we all do. If you don't like your job, or you feel frustrated because things don't go your way, quit and go try and work in a thankless job like a janitor or housekeeper.
Believe me, I have a LOT more respect for those people than I do for you.
I think I'd have to agree with MTF. The mainstream of digital communication is changing. Common modems that we used to use (28.8, 33.6, 56k, etc.) are not "lusted" after any more, thanks to the offering of DSL and Cable-modem services.
I made the switch from a USR 56k to a cable modem and I swear I will never go back! Once I experienced the speed difference I was hooked.
The best they can offer for v.92 is faster handshaking?
Big deal, with my Cable modem, I have no handshaking, I'm always connected.
It just seems a bit frivolous to try and "wow" us with this chocolate-chip muffin when we already have a triple layer double fudge swirl chocolate cake!!
You need to decide which aspect of robotics you want to get into.
If you just want to toy around and experiment with kits and such, you can probably find good kits and parts at your local electronics dealer (I.E. Fry's Electronics, Edwards Scientific, etc.), but if you're considering a career in robotics, you have more options.
There are industrial robots, such as the welding type on vehicle assembly lines; Engineering positions for these normally require a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering.
There are robots used in equipment such as semiconductor manufacturing which are quite a bit smaller than their industrial cousins, but require an enormous amount of precision. You may find a position working on these with just an Associate's degree in electrical engineering, but with no previous experience, it may be a while before you can actually program and maintain these on your own.
You can also work with experimental robotics which are normally found in University research departments such as MIT and Stanford, but these people are usually there working on a grant or conducting research for a specific goal or Company.
There are other types of robotics but hopefully this gives you a general idea of what's available. Your programming experience will help quite a bit and you could find a position just teaching robots but if you want to actually get into building and maintaining robots, you'll need to get a good understanding of electronics, pneumatics, and general mechanical theory.
You know we're gonna be the laughing stock of the galaxy! All the guys over at Tau Ceti are gonna have a field day once they get a look at our new billboards! I don't even wanna think about what the gang on Alpha Centauri will say when THEY see the eyesore floating around our planet! I mean, THEY don't have a pizza maker advertising in space around THEIR planets, right? NO, they're happy just using the ole' telepathy gimmick to transmit advertisments....:-)

All ISP's should be held accountable for log entries that hold up to the industry prescribed format, which begins with the reporting parties official rank, followed by universal date sequence followed by a detailed analysis of his or her findings.

Well, normally I don't respond to flamebait but since you asked, I'm leaning towards BeOS 5.01 now. So far it's very nice and flexible. I can do quite a bit with it and is extremely stable and fast. Perhaps you might climb down from your bitching post and check it out for yourself.
Perhaps I seemed to whine in my previous post, but at least I had the gumption to sign my name to it.
who else is gonna get on the Linux bandwagon. I mean I used to support Linux and thought it was really cool; a rebel, upstart, underdog OS that really might give us a chance at something new and different! It still might, don't get me wrong, I am just seeing scores and scores of Linux oriented ads and articles of everyone's ideas and thoughts on the OS.
Quite frankly, it's not all that new and exciting anymore; everyone's dragging it into mediocrity, now I find myself yearning for a new "Unsung Hero" OS.
Probably just locked myself into a never-ending quest to find the perfect OS. I have no idea what to do once I find it but, hey....

As if corporate America needs more high level management! Already we find more and more corporations are becoming way too "top-heavy" because everyone thinks that they are a boss or that they are the ones in charge of a portion of the company (I.E. VP of Marketing, VP of Advertising, Assistant to the VP of finance, etc.) None of this crap is necessary!
What really makes me angry is that these are also the idiots who are pulling down the really high wages that suck the lifeblood of the company and when it's apparent that the company is having financial trouble, the morons lay off hundreds to thousands of their hard working blue collar workers, whose combined salaries still don't match that of the top executives. Or, they might "release" several of the executives, but have to pay 'em six or seven digit figures as a "Severance Package"
NO human being works hard enough to claim earning that kind of money!
I say let's terminate with extreme prejudice (meaning NO severance package!) all top and mid level management, distribute all that wealth to hard working blue collar America and eliminate this struggle we face in trying to earn a decent living!
I don't believe that the kids are smarter than their parents, per se. It's more like the kids are generally open-minded and their thoughts and brain patterns haven't been worn and burned by the years of use that older people have, thus they can be much more susceptable or "available" to new thoughts and ideas.
Plus older people have a much stronger tendency to refuse any kind of change or improvement which the onslaught of computers have produced.
YEAH! An' put in some dancing women!! NAKED Dancing women! Well, ok, put 'em in bikinis at least, in case there are kids logged on (We know they never do, right?:-} )
Undeniably, over the course of a long trek, the sail will encounter meteors and other small but lethal projectiles known to be hurtling through space (Look at the surface of the moon for proof!), will it be able to stand the multitude of punctures and tears from these or hasn't it been considered?
The one thing that comes to my mind when I read this; is there a tube that runs up into your arse and all you have to do is eat beans or corned beef and cabbage and you'll have a limitless supply of energy for the motor!
Um, you have a good idea, however, Intel's only major problem for quite some time has been keeping up with the demand for processors. (I've been told that thus is the only reason AMD has been able to get the foothold into the market that they have.)
Under this circumstance, it only stands to reason that a request from the manufacturers to Intel to slim down the constant advancements in CPU's would be welcomed by Intel so that they may get a step or to further on their current production lag time.
If you think about it, all they (Intel, AMD, etc.) have to do is release CPU's at incremental sppeds of, say 100Mhz, 1000Mhz, 1500Mhz, etc. then leave it to us to overclock 'em (or in the case of the weak at heart; underclock) to whatever speed we like! I run a P90 at 750Mhz and have all the heat for my house I need! Shoot, I even installed a potentiometer in the front of my case to dial in whatever speed I feel like running at! (Great for those older DOS-based games!)
Great, once we use up the moon where do we search next? Do we head for Mars and see if we can obliterate it faster than we did the moon? It would probably be worthwhile and understandable if we could know that this would be used for a worthy cause as in a power source for interplanetary exploration, however, we all know the truth that this would just be used to power our T.V.'s so that we can watch Gilligan's Island for another thousand years or so, or to power our vehicles so that we can continue or daily trek to work and eventually have the entire Earth covered in Asphalt.
