Sure, you could use an open source application suite, but the so could every other company out there. And then, if they did that, well hell, we could all then do something actively to fix this "we use office, ie5 can recognize office 2000, and so we use office 2000 and ie5" problem.

Seriously, somebody send me sone information on an application suite that can be used with a browser the same as IE5 and Office 2000 please!

Software engineering at the current state produces software that produces "bugs" or "errors" that we did not expect. I guess we should somehow master software engineering to the point that we make no "errors" possible before taking on this subject?

Yeah right, think about it and then you realize it is not what can we do, but what we can do by mistake that should scare us.(this quote is open source by me and can be used in any way).

In it for the money? If you take a class and all they teach you is on MS based products, then they will probably know mostly MS based material "in class".

This brings up another issue. Many companies may not port to other products such as Linux because they can't find the people to support them in general. Do you see a cycle here?

If schools support other products other than MS, one such reason being costs, this would produce more employees to support companies moving in that direction.

It may take some time, but it will happen unless things change. (Until then, research by a student in their own time outside of class to cover these areas will provide great benefits now or later.)

They have been able to control a market place and charge high prices through schemes that would be illegal if only they didn't control so much of the government (through campaign contributions, lobbying, etc.). The RIAA, the MPAA, and the publishing houses have locked up the content world into a feedback loop where their most prominent and profitable content creators get to keep publishing, and the little guys never get heard.

And the government can then allow certain information or content to be abolished or "not present" in return for this monopoly. Yes, people live in the United States of America, yet the government controls what these united states can see and hear one way or another. Worse yet, we can't control what the government can see or hear. Carnivore? (Why not name it sally instead?)

Let's look ahead. This form of publication will allow a great freedome to authors. What about the film industry?

Can you imagine when directors can post their projects online in a form they wish directly? (Okay, director cuts are given to successful films that the movie industry says "okay, you did good, now you can add scenes we didn't think were good or appropriate, but we still have th final say!".

Imagine seeing a film produced by a director in it's entirety in it's original form. Nobody to say "that isn't marketable", just the way they wanted to shoot the movie.

The discussions we have today about mp3 files and ebooks will be pale once full length movies will be feasible online. A lot of stuff will be put out there that "people" don't want you to see. It is important that we establish a free way of voting for this content so that it is recognized outside of the commercial "award shows". Lay the ground work now in anticipation for the existing technology of the future.
