In short, OS X is a great OS because you don't have to spend time fucking with things you don't care about, you can spend your time actually doing your work, leaving you that much more time to play.

Is it a big change? yes. Is the whole world upside down? ummm.... no. You still have a shell, all the standard unix utilities and most everything is done the Unix way, even when it's done through the GUI. Personal Web Sharing is Apache. Windows File Sharing is Samba. Printer Sharing is cups. The firewall is a default deny ipfw setup.

Sounds like Unix to me. Though admittedly I'm biased, since I really like the fact that I'm posting this message from a unix box (OS X 10.2.1) that's currently running Illustrator, Photoshop and Quicken, while charging up my iPod.

clock skew, a problem which we get better and better at handling, and which isn't particulary difficult to solve if the application allows for the addition of a small amount of latancy.

To use the DS3 example that somebody mentioned previously, it's entirely possible to create hardware on each side of the link that would send simultaneously over each link, and on the other side the bits would be reassembled, with some small reassembly delay.

Using this method you could greatly outstrip the bandwidth available from the current top of the line serial link, at the cost of a small amount of latency. And yes, I understand that 8 lines wouldn't get you 8 times the speed, because there'd need to be protocol overhead.

That being said, this is slashdot, so I tend to avoid real debate. Very few people have the capability to thoughtfully discuss technical topics, and those that do are often unreasonable, unable to recognize humor and generally unwilling to engage in anything interesting or useful. Thus, it's far easier to just use a quip and a quote to imply that your statement is clearly wrong than it is to explain why you're wrong.

The only reason it's even remotely related is because people have a tendancy to buy SCSI drives like this one, which is a 15K RPM drive with a 3.2ms seek, and the ability to sustain a 75MB/sec data throughput rate, whereas high-end ATA drives like this one spin at 7200 RPM, have a 9ms seek, and don't list their maximum sustained data throughput rate on the data sheet.

Obviously this isn't conducive to helping the satellite radio companies reach their break-even points (if memory serves me correctly from other articles I've read, the break even point is either 500,000 or 1,000,000 customers).

Sirius is partnered with Ford (Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Land Rover, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Mazda, Volvo), Audi, BMW, DaimlerChrylser (Mercedes, Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Jeep), and Nissan (Infiniti and Nissan). XM also has an impressive partnership list, including GM and more.

Well, I haven't had the opportunity to use nautilus in a long, long time, though I have used Finder, so some of my points may no longer be valid.

A purely visual point, finder has a very attractive interface, whereas nautilus looks a lot like netscape 1.

An opinion piece, I like that finder launches an appropriate viewer for each file, instead of viewing things within the interface proper like Nautilus does.

I find that the side pane in nautilus is generally a waste of space, though clearly that's a matter of opinion.

I don't recall that Nautilus has search capabilities that are as nice as the search in the finder in Jaguar. (you click on search and you get a new window saying 'search in: everywhere, local disks, home, or specific places'. if you choose specific places you get a little window that lets you choose which drives to search on. Then there's a window that says 'Search for items whose: then you choose any number of criteria (filename, date modified, date created, kind, extension, visibility), and depending on which criteria you choose you get an appropriate list of modifiers: (contains, starts with, ends with, is) for file name, (is, is not, no value) for type, then you get an appriate last box (maybe a text input box, maybe a drop down, maybe nothing if the first two things say it all).

Mostly, I think I just don't like the explorer metaphor, where one application manages your files, views your images, browses the internet, renders html, and more. It makes, IMO, for a somewhat bizarre user experience.

The fact of the matter is that adding the words 'with a computer' to a process shouldn't fundamentally change the way we regard it, legally. There are already specific accessility guidelines in place for the federal government, i.e. Section 508. These guidelines should be followed by businesses as well.

The idea that a website that sells things is not a store, solely because it doesn't have a door and a roof is asinine. We live in an age where some of our largest retailers do not exist in any traditional sense, i.e. amazon.com, and many others offer special incentives that are only available if you use their web-based storefront, i.e. SouthWest's Click 'n Save fares.

I understand that the judge was under a great deal of pressure to find in this manner, because requiring websites to be accessible to people with disabilities would have non-trivial initial costs for big business, but arguing that a website which engages in commerce isn't a store is a lot like arguing over the meaning of the word 'is'.
