    Credit Card Bills?

That's nothing! Child support for all these people has gone through the roof...

Why does that contribute? Well folks contributing to child support have a permanent credit report "debt" and are hardly looked at to bring in comforts for themselves, or there kids through credit cards, or most financing.

Can you afford an 18 year credit "debt" on your file? Previous laws, did not have this, and you could actually provide more for the family, and extended family in your life.

I remember when credit card items only stayed on your file for ..7 years?

Hey, but that's what we get for being horny right?

I think they'll be pushing paypal and fight fraud through paypal's current policies, of course they will guarrantee if your transaction is ONLY through paypal.

It only makes sense to do it this way since Paypal has really got a good rep with folks.

I have personally vouch for the fraud dept at paypal, I was a charged $200 fraudulently, and paypal reimbused me for the charge on the debit card 5 days later.

Ebay on the other hand has a terrible reputation for following up on fraud.

I just hope they don't make Paypal have a rep as crappy as eBays by changing the policy at paypal.

Small inventors are the losers here, but at the expense of quality (or at least a step in the right direction)

I still think other countries would benefit from this document avalanche in the US.

    How?

Have a small nation like Haiti (or other nation that owes $$ to the US) create there own patent offices, with certified specialists, (probably from the US) then have a UN agreement accepting the mini-patents as art for all prior art cases, with the possibility of full patent rights after 5 years. The mini pats can only be filed by the average citizen, and can only fit on one sheet of paper, with a fontsize of 8 as the minimum font size. One extra sheet can be added for Graphics, or pics, and the price would be $50, of which the US gets paid $40-$45 from the country in question. Of course... the small country would accept applications from acceptable countries all over the world, this would bring in money from other countries, and not just recycle american money.

This will lower the cost of patents for the small time inventor, help other nations pay us back some of there debts, and have a system of recording prior art.

Maybe you guys at /. can cut out some of these ideas and plug them into your own, and make this idea stream a bit better?

Ok this might not go well with many of you guys... but just keep an Open mind... if you are serious about meeting all the items in the Original Post....

-set up a network with tiny boxes everywhere you want a camera...

-set up each box with windows 2000 pro minimal config & windows media encoder 7.1

-connect all digital or analog cameras to the configured boxes and configure the encoder to save the media on to a file server of your choice (That Terabyte server would be great here!)

-change the bit rate of the encoded images to something small with 5 frames a sec and no audio (remember it is illegal to record audio kids! only video is legal by the wiretapping laws in this country.)

-although you can encrypt the streams after they are saved through Digital Rights Management, I wouldn't suggest it since it is all in house anyway, you have to get a license through MS, and I presume few people would have access to your terabyte server. So if you have crappy security on your file server... you might as well not even do any of this. (file server can be an OS other than MS if your paranoid.. you know...)

-set up your encoders to record the "live event" to your file server(s)... you can also broadcast them out at the same time to specific computers... for live monitoring, it's up to you all if you want to just record, or monitor and record.

-Ok, now start all the suckers, and you are off and running.

    - There IS a major drawback... the video can be delayed between 10-20 secs.

    Hope this helps!

First, do we teach them that piracy is wrong just as "Santa Clause" exists, and be done with it, knowing that in the future the copyright issues may change? Wouldn't this damage, or ingrain a belief in a child which can be false in the future because of the new generation of 'software as a service' products, and possible copyright changes?

Do I want my 9 year old daughter believeing all my friends are like the evil pirate from "Treasure Island"?

I think, I'll just let them figuire out what is possible with technology, and teach them about money using software that is current and not let them... 'Fall Behind' because of the cost of the software. Later they can see for themselves, what is more benificial for society, instead of me telling them something that corporate america wants me to tell them.

Seems from the post that the Senator is concerned with Acts, Current Laws, compliance issues, etc that govern the current state of affairs within the US.

Under my wish list I would reclassify the Internet as a new controllable entity state with its own governing bodies, under UN direction.

I only say this, because if we cannot create any global legislation on issues, the US (and others) will always fall victim to predatory attacks.

The only reasons I can see that, the senator may not push something like this forward, is due to the feeling of control, and influence that the US thinks it has over the internet because of its business ties, but it is this same business ties, and income producing entities that lose if we pile on more laws that only exist within our borders. So If the DMCA passes globally through a UN resolution, then fine, most of us will accept it, and globally we would carry out initiatives to stave off attacks.

The DMCA issue comes from the fact that although other nations may use bully code to give us black eyes, our mother Fed does not defend us, or let us use code to prevent this from happening over and over again because we are not permitted to touch certain 'tools' that are only available to the bullies because there mother countries don't care.
