If he's using a Mac and Safari, there's literally no way to do that, since the entire windowing system is built on top of PostScript, so PDFs open automatically in basically everything.
That's because in the Ubuntu mindset, Compiz = Compositing. Now that several window managers have their own compositing (GNOME 3's WM, Unity, KWin) it can cause collisions. The same thing happens when you try to fullscreen a KVM or QEMU virtual machine with a compositor running.
Hopefully, the horrendous quality of all this lowest-bidder outsourced crapware (both hard- and soft-) will leave a market for people to bring manufacturing, and thus jobs, back to first-world nations, and (in my own selfish mind) the US in particular. I don't know about the average consumer, but I'd gladly pay more for a better, more durable product.
Home recording and non-commercial copying of video tapes is legal. The MPAA *has* to fight this, or they forfeit whatever tenuous claims they had against people sharing anything that Zediva has ever stocked.
A user list? If people are too stupid to remember their username, they don't deserve to log in. Also, unless you're running some sort of ancient pre-ACPI system (in which case you're likely running Puppy, not Ubuntu), you can just press the power button to shut down.

Sure you can... if it's open-source. This isn't a "Chinese software sucks" problem, it's a "proprietary software sucks" problem.
OpenBSD, as of the current release.
"Don't taze me, bro!" ring a bell?
I was going to reply but that's everything I wanted to say. +1.
That just makes the eventual Win32s port of PuTTY that much sexier.
deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports
# apt-get install -t squeeze-backports iceweasel
Iceweasel 4 on Squeeze/Wheezy is fun. Fuck your newfangled installer.
That was intentional. Microsoft was founded in 1975, and Neuromancer was published nine years later.
Linux had 64-bit Flash by mid-2008. They just scrapped it, since it sucked horribly, and 'Square' is the beginning of essentially Flash64 version 2.x.

It's a normal X login manager without all the extra crap from gdm and kdm, and since it's in the Ubuntu repos already, all it needs is a good theme.

At that point why not just charge them $50 trillion and wipe out the national debt?
on that connection, open this (bogus) url: http://our-ass-with-both-hands-and-a-m.ap/
Better idea: announce that the root DNS servers will stop responding to IPv4 requests in 365 days. THAT will get people's attention in a hurry.
Now, count the number of Motorola vs Intel processors in use in the world today. Hmmmmm.
Both pale compared to the number of ARM chips with flat address spaces. Oh, snap.
I'm at a university with ~15,000 students and a Class B. We only stopped having routable IP addresses for wifi clients last semester.
Actually, that could make schools and public libraries even slower to change over - by doing NOTHING they'd be actively preventing porn browsing.
Would you mind posting a link to a source tarball, then?
That's why vsftpd defaults to anonymous FTP with no anonymous upload/delete access and runs in a root-squashed environment.
