In my area, South West Atlanta, cable service has been dodgy at best. I live in a rural area with cows, chickens and goats up the street, so I was surprised when dsl came. The baby bell here has made a lot of progress bringing DSL service to the masses. I just recently signed up for it and have been getting around 1.47mb/s and about 250k upload. Not as fast as some of the cable stories I've been reading, but I have never been kicked off for using usenet or Morpheus/kazaa. The only thing that seems to be funny is that I can't seem to connect to any Open Nap or Gnutella servers.
As for the cable services, they really haven't been around too much. Smyrna cable up north has downloads only, and att has been having problems. I like the dsl its pretty reliable, but I wish it were faster. oh well, 49 is a decent price.
Actually, Aspergers is much more than just what Wired reported on. I was recently diagnosed with it and it includes a few un-geek like things. For one thing, many Aspies are terrible at math and calculations; I can do physics or write programs in cobol, C, Fortran, and even do some x86 assembler, but I can't for the life of me grasp basic Algebra. I had to repeat it four times in high school and once in college. Another thing about Aspies is a tendance for motor slowness and clumsiness. I was fired from two jobs for moving too slowly, and from another for damaging too much merchandise due to clumsiness. Also, many Aspies tend to have an akward gate, which I definately have and it looks mighty strange being 6' 4". However, the thing about social situations is very accurate. I cannot seem to navigate regular social interactions, and have been the butt of ridicule all of my life. I only have three real friends, and have never had a girl friend. The diagnosis was huge weight off of my shoulders, because it explains a whole lot. I can type around 60 words per minute, but can't write legibly or quickly. I can't run or do any bilateral sports such as football (running and catching) or basketball. I can load down with two programming courses a semester, but I can't pass basic Algebra, and I can carry on two or three ICQ conversations but not one in the RW. Its real Asperger. there's a wealth of info online, and I hope someone reads this, but the moderators are probably all gone.
I think one of the great applications for this would be handheld gaming systems. They already have somewhat lo-resolution, and the GBA's arm based processor is up to the task. Lets hope to see a picture perfect Resident Evil port to the GBA!
Well, here is what the great Stephen Hawking has to say about entropy.
Entropy, how can I explain it? I'll take it frame by frame it,
to have you all jumping, shouting saying it.
Let's just say that it's a measure of disorder,
in a system that is closed, like with a border.
It's sorta, like a, well a measurement of randomness,
proposed in 1850 by a German, but wait I digress.
"What the fuck is entropy?", I here the people still exclaiming,
it seems I gotta start the explaining.
You ever drop an egg and on the floor you see it break?
You go and get a mop so you can clean up your mistake.
But did you ever stop to ponder why we know it's true,
if you drop a broken egg you will not get an egg that's new.
That's entropy or E-N-T-R-O to the P to the Y,
the reason why the sun will one day all burn out and die.
Order from disorder is a scientific rarity,
allow me to explain it with a little bit more clarity.
Did I say rarity? I meant impossibility,
at least in a closed system there will always be more entropy.
That's entropy and I hope that you're all down with it,
if you are here's your membership.
Chorus
You down with entropy?
Yeah, you know me! (x3)
Who's down with entropy?
Every last homey!

Defining entropy as disorder's not complete,
'cause disorder as a definition doesn't cover heat.
So my first definition I would now like to withdraw,
and offer one that fits thermodynamics second law.
First we need to understand that entropy is energy,
energy that can't be used to state it more specifically.
In a closed system entropy always goes up,
that's the second law, now you know what's up.
You can't win, you can't break even, you can't leave the game,
'cause entropy will take it all 'though it seems a shame.
The second law, as we now know, is quite clear to state,
that entropy must increase and not dissipate.
Creationists always try to use the second law,
to disprove evolution, but their theory has a flaw.
The second law is quite precise about where it applies,
only in a closed system must the entropy count rise.
The earth's not a closed system' it's powered by the sun,
so fuck the damn creationists, Doomsday get my gun!
That, in a nutshell, is what entropy's about,
you're now down with a discount.
I find it very interesting that Micro$oft is the main culprit behind this new technology. Is it not their own system that also "copies" music? The X-Box has a feature built into it that allows music to be ripped to the hard disk and played during your game. In essence, they're disabling their own machine! It makes no bloddy sense!

Yes, I happen to have one of these VCRs too. It is an Emerson that has the commercial skip right on the remote, and two fast forward speeds. By tapping the commercial skip button, it will fast forward at hi-speed for 30 seconds. Tapping it twice will fast forward 1 minute, 3 times a minute and 30 seconds so on and so forth. Anyway, I've had this thing for more than a year and a half, but no one has come to sew Emerson!
Geez guys, this is Slashdot news for nerds, stuff that matters, not stuff that mattered! This is about a month old. I went to the Cube club in Atlanta, by the Olympic Centennial Park.
The show club had a lot of tv's, around 60 by my count, with all sorts of games. Also, there were these "Cubistically correct" zones that featured Gamecubes hooked to slightly larger tvs, enclosed with full surround sound systems.
There was a lot of loud music blaring, so I didn't get to hear the games much but I did play every single one.
Rogue Leader was definately the most impressive title of the show. It had excellent graphics, and neato surround sound. The controls were neat, with the analog buttons doing having it where you could vary speed and go into hyper space. I liked the controller, but I felt the n64 controller was just more versatile.
Next, I played eternal Darkness, which was really nice. One of the cube counselors told me it was an early demo left over from E3, and it showed. It locked up on occasion, but was overall pretty stable. While the game is projected to have over 13 characters interacting from different times, this demo only had three characters with three separate levels. I played all three, and my favorite was the chick with the shotgun. It had a neat way of aiming, by turning the area of the zombie that you wanna shoot white. Also, the game had a really neat meter, called the insanity meter. Once it went all the way down, the game started to hallucinate. The walls started to bleed and my character started to come apart. First, my head fell off, then my arms, then my torso, until I was a pair of legs.... Very freaky.
Next, I played Smash Bros Melee. It was a lot of fun, but it was sooo crowded, so I could only play it once. It was a lot of fun, but I got my butt whooped, because apparently they took away Kirby's ability to assimilate other characters powers. THe graphics on that title were outstanding, with absolutely no slowdown. The one player mode was nice too, because it had 2D style levels ala megaman, before fighting a boss at the end of a stage.
Madden was nice, but I'm not overly into sports titles. Its graphics were very impressive, looking like a carbon copy of the PS2 only a little more crisp.
Wave Race was my favorite of the show, and it wasn't that crowded. The gameplay was very nice, and the multiplayer was very fluid but seemed to cut down on the detail a bit. There were new tricks there too, which I played around with. The loading was very quick, but apparent. Oh well, optical media dosn't have all the benefits.
Pikmin was very kewl, but I was a little pissed that it only had 3 days to play. The graphics were very nice, with no slowdown, but it just wasn't the type of game that you would play at a trade show.
The second other game that seemed to be an early demo was Kobe Bryant Courtside 2002. The graphics didn't seem all that impressive, and the AI was waaaay off. I still managed to get my butt kicked, because I hate sports titles, but I still know an early demo when I see one. The characters seemed to move acquardly and the face mapping was bad. HOwever, they did a good job with some of the textures, as you could easily make out tattoos and other things.
Monkey Ball was easily the most addictive game of the show. WHile most of the "adults" were too stuck up to play what looked like a kiddie game, I ran over to play it. The concept is really wierd. It features a monkey trapped in a clear ball, who has to do various games. I won the four player monkey parachute game.
Starfox was fun too, with a great upgrade to the original N64 engine. While I could still spot some of its N64 roots, the graphics were very detailed. The framerate stayed fairly high, except when a lot of enemies would populate the screen or when you would change from an inside to an outside area. The most fun section to me was the arwing level and the morphing sequence, where fox could morph into an enemy dinosaur. The arwing level was really full of meteors and such, but there seemed be no enemy fighters!
Overall, the gamecube club was a lot of fun. Becuase we were one of the first, things like the cube girls, and stuff for men magazines were not present. There was however, a stuff for men poster. There was a lot of loud techno music there, so I couldn't really hear the games, but they were giving out headphones so that was nice. Another thing that was conspicuously missing from the show were drinks. I got very thirsty there, but pressed on and stayed from about 7:00 to midnight.
"Next-Gen Apples To Include 1394b, USB 2.0"

Don't forget God. Without him, none of this would be possible. He created man, who created the Internet, who created MP3.com and Napster which facilitated all this piracy.
I didn't know that FireWire ports could also transfer fire.
Yea, thats apart of the all important security system. The firwire ports "transfer fire" to whomever tries to steal it. They get a nasty burn from the flame thrower
I agree with you totally, and so does the big, evil empire Micro$oft. They have already said that their X-Box console will ship without region coding on the games. Jap games, European or American games will work on any other X-box unit. As much as I don't like Microsoft, I like this feature of the X-Box a lot.

well, I'm not quite thirty, hell, not quite even 20 and I'm already starting to put on the pounds. When I was little, I was a skinny nerdy kid who had asthma really bad and frequented the hospital so much, that my mother kept a pair of clothes in the trunk of the car all the time and the nurses knew me on a first name basis.
Well, fast forward to the teen years, and I hit a growth spurt. My metabolism slowed down, and I started to eat more and the weight piled on. By senior time in High School, I was 6ft 3 inches and 250lbs! I wore a size 42 belt, and I had a santa claus belly.
Things were getting out of hand, so I joined the fitness class at the community college up the street during summer. Well, the class helped me to establish better eating habits and I've lost about 15lbs. I don't feel any smaller, but everyone around me seems to notice a difference. I'm back to a size 38 belt, working my way down to a 36, is my ultimate goal. Anyway, the class was only 6 weeks, of excercise.
Everyday, we did 1/2 hour of cardiovascular excercise, eg walking, treadmill or excercise bike. And for the rest of the hour, anything you wanted to do as long as it was excercise. I chose to concentrate on my biceps and triceps, and do lots of sit-ups. My pudge has decreased quite a bit, and I can do 110 on the tricep lift machine. I can curl around 40lbs per bicep.
Actually, you do have a point. A bulk of code taken from say MS Word 2000 probably dosn't look like art, but neither does a small spec taken from say, the Mona Lisa. If you were to take a small chip from the painting, similar to how people are taking a small chip from programs, you lose artistic expression. I think it would be much easier if she could demonstrate programming as art, by using some of the more popular works such as Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Gran Turismo etc. These games are all works of art, not only because they used intricate programming and techniques to push their systems to the limit, but also, because they blended sound, video and intelligent gameplay together. I think, that there is actually a section in one of the awards (Grammy or tony or something) that actually awards video games.
While the judges may not be familiar with these works, it does not take a stretch of the imagination to bring more widely recognised works to the floor. One could say that the special effects in movies today or even some of the upcoming movies; which are both recognized art forms are computer code. If I'm not mistakened, the second movie in George Lucas' new starwars trilogy will be shot entirely in digital format and bamboozled already was shot in digital format. Also, she could point out that the special effects in the critically acclaimed film, the Matrix, were done using computer code, and are art.
while this may work on some software, in my father's field (mechanic), many of the software use a third party clock mechanism. In particular, a piece of software called "ALL Data", which stores diagrams/books etc on cd/dvd have a little dongle to attaches to your parallel port. The software will not run without it, and the dongle has its own clock, so setting the date back is useless. We have literally stacks of useless CD/DVDs now, because All Data was absorbed by Mac tools, and was discontinued.
Personally, I do think that bullying causes a large amount of the problems in these kids lives. I'll also play the race card for a minute, becuase thats another trend I've seen here
When I was young, even though I went to a private christian school, I was still teased and ridiculed. I was a tall, bony, skinny sickly child who was always out of school with asthma attacks. To make matters worse, the tall girl in school was the one to bully me, and made my life hell for 6 long, agonizing years. Then came hell, or as I like to call it, middle school.
I was put in public school for the first time, on the "better" (read: white) side of town, where the teachers and admisitrators were racist and put me in lower classes. Things only got worse there, because I was still the skinny little black kid, who was forever getting sick, and I had a 2 hour (thats 1 way) bus ride. I frequently got jumped, until one day I decided to get back at them. I went over my friends house, he was a gun collector, and "borrowed" his.45 look-alike bb-pistol. I hid it in my backpack, and rode up to school on the bus. When they decided to jump me that day, I reached in my book bag with my hand on the gun and unzipped it with the other hand. They all jumped back and screamed "He's got a gun!". However, I was in the back and the bus driver didn't hear it. We got to school and the day passed without incident, but after a week, they were back to their old tricks. People would put gum in my hair, spit on me, go through my things, hide my medicine, one even pulled an x-acto knife on me in art class. However, I did get my revenge.
It was the last day of school. We had that crap school olympics event, and I failed the particular event I had to do, and someone stuffed my drink full of styrofome and spit back on the bleachers. That was about all I could stand! I had filled a bottle of gatoraide full of urine the previous week, so I could exact my revenge. When I stepped off the bus, I took the bottle, and ran as fast as I could splashing it at everyone I could. I hit this one high school senior in the eye whose favorite hobby was to torment me; that day, life was good.
When I got to high school, things gradually got better. I just shrugged off what people said about me, and I had hit a growth spurt so I was kind of big and most people didn't bother me. By 10th grade, I discovered a hole in fortres and started charging people to have emulators installed under their network space. By then, my nerdiness helped my popularity quotient to do a 180! I even had a few girls ask me out:) I still see people from highschool now, and they always ask me what I'm doing. Well, I'm a first year college student at Ga Tech for all those who wanna know.

I'll also play the race card for a minute, becuase thats another trend I've seen here When I was young, even though I went to a private christian school, I was still teased and ridiculed. I went over my friends house, he was a gun collector, and "borrowed" his .45 look-alike bb-pistol.
I even had a few girls ask me out :) I still see people from highschool now, and they always ask me what I'm doing. Well, I'm a first year college student at Ga Tech for all those who wanna know.
probably a departure from the common /. post, but the console games Xtreme G 2 has an exceptional menu system. Look it up, they are at blockbuster pretty cheap, and I think its written in Java. Starwars battle for the Naboo has a decent menu system, but xtreme g's is better. Get the n64 versions, i'm not so sure about the psx versions
