  1. Nothing's "broken" on What's Holding Back Encryption? · · Score: 1

Because the people who pay for everything don't "see" a problem. From the uneducated user's perspective, everything works "the same" whether or not it's encrypted. They don't see how anything is "broken" so why should they pay $$$ in the form of certs and staff time to upgrade (i.e., "fix") things?

(That's a possible explanation, not an excuse.)

Not the "worst" infection I've ever cleaned up, but certainly the weirdest!

That said, "pink sites" is a dumb idea. Or sites of any OTHER color to support a cause. Still, I support freedom of speech and all that. Anyone who wants their site pink because of breast cancer or panther fetishes or whatever, well, more power to 'em.

    I still think it's stupid.

  11. It can be done, but trust is key on Small, Virtual Sysadmin Services? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Speaking as someone who IS a some-time sysadmin for several clients, I can say that trust is paramount. The places of which I speak are generally self-sufficient on a day-to-day basis, but need advice or someone to "just do it" when a major upgrade needs to take place and no "regular" staff can be spared for the task (assuming their knowledgeable.) I do work for doctors, lawyers, and one print shop (to which I even have a key!). These are all people I have known for years, however, in a rural setting. I would think that references should be a MUST given what you are likely to need such a person to do.

  13. Re:Quit -- on Pushing the Need for Bug Tracking? · · Score: 1

If you can implement what you want with a minimum of effort/hassle, then do so whether your boss likes/endorses it or not. Keep it off-site if you must. Hell, even stock up on half a dozen flash drives and do it THAT way if you have to! And the first time it saves your/the company's bacon, make damn sure your boss KNOWS IT. Then hand him a requisition for whatever you need to properly implement what you NEED and compare that with the cost to the company as calculated by ($$$ lost per hour) * numberof hours The System was down because of a code glitch. If he still doesn't "get it", get out. You'll probably make more money freelancing yourself back to him as a consultant when he calls you. And he probably WILL coall you because it sounds like he doesn't want you wasting any time doing frivilous things like documenting your code either!!!

  14. Re:A different approach on Accurate Project Time Tracking? · · Score: 1, Insightful

I'm not against project-based billing, but if you're going to go that route, make DAMN sure you have a finely-detailed punch list of everything that needs to be done before the project is "complete." And I mean EVERYTHING. If you don't, you'll have customers who have you coming back time and again for a "fix" or "tweak" they'll claim was paid for by the price they paid for the entire project.

I do light, user-based consulting as a side job and I bill strictly by the hour. That puts control of how much to spend in the hands of my clients. I give rough estimations of time involved and give reports as I go. At any time they can tell me to stop and owe me no more money.

Given the poster's stated work habits, it does sound to me like being paid "per task" or "per project" might be the best way to go. The question then becomes, will you waste more time in negotiating the price for a project than you're currently not billing for?

  15. MacQuarium on The Funniest Places for Hardware Stickers? · · Score: 0

I once built a MacQuarium out of a Mac Plus. This was just before the PowerPC was released and the Mac Quadras and PowerBooks were shipping with big, red "Ready for PowerPC Upgrade!" stickers. My co-worker slapped one on the front of my MacQuarium. It's still there.

  16. Deep Freeze on Best Practices in Workgroup Maintenance? · · Score: 0

If you're talking about Windows PCs, nothing beats Deep Freeze from Faronics.

Get your PCs set up the way you want them, "freeze" them, and that's IT. All changes to the file system are cached. The upshot is that anything the user does the user is allowed to do "normally," but any changes evaporate as the aforementioned cache is deleted on reboot. As long as users have a networked Home Directory you're all set. If you have a SUS/WUS server, the PCs can be set to "thaw" in the middle of the night and apply WindowsUpdates.

And Faronics (the company) is a JOY to work with!!!
