  1. nitpick on ZapStation CD/MP3/DVD Player/Server · · Score: 1

while i am one for hacking hardware, and find things like this fun to hack, it just seems for less than 600 bux you could prolly just build a celeron 600 or so with similar components. get yourself a nice black rackmount case, and you're set. it's not like an i-opener, where you can get them for real cheap and then hack it, and it doesn't seem to do anything that a cheap computer can't do today. in order for these types of boxes to be desirable, they have to have a primary application or low price which makes it a considerable alternative to a regular pc.

or perhaps not. i guess we'll see how it sells.

on the subject of jar-jar, i think i know how this should go...

STAR WARS, EPISODE TWO: DIE GUNGAN BITCH!

The movie begins with Yoda , Anakin, and Jar-Jar in a room discussing the status quo. Anakin is visably pissed

Yoda: Anakin, you must not have hatred in your heart, for lead you to the dark side, that will!
Anakin: But master yoda, I FUCKING HATE JAR-JAR, and i'm going to kill him!
Jar Jar: Yousa say i'ma gonna die?
Anakin then unsheathes his light-sabre and rips jar-jar a new one, and jar jar dies.
Yoda: Kill jar jar you did! Relieved I am, but now Darth Vader you become!
Anakin: Small price to pay, bitch! Now i don't have to listen to that BITCH for the next 2 HOURS!
Yoda: Thank you! Complete your training has now become!

If you were to copy the music to a wav and then compress that into a mp3 (or whatever compression algorithm happens to be cool at the time) you would prolly destroy any "inaudible" watermark, as the whole idea of music compression is to get rid of all of the unimportant stuff. mp3 is unaware of SDMI, so it doesn't know that the inaudible watermark is important, and it'd prolly just toss it.

and even if there was a generational loss, it wouldn't be that bad, and when you figure that most people will be doing this to trade music over the internet, can they really complain if it's free?

It's just a personal preference as I've been using DOS since I was 5. However, seeing that all my grandmother does is turn on her computer and run AOL, I think using linux would be a good idea. Let's not kid each other, linux is more stable. I have had linux machines before, and they are a whole lot more stable than win 98. Stability is all that matters in this particular application, because the only software she uses is AOL. Now tell me, why is it bad to use linux in this situation?

If there really is a stable AOL linux client, I'd prolly be willing to switch. But, if AOL's software is unstable, there really wouldn't be any point to switching. Besides... I'm not sure if I could trust AOL to put out something stable.

What defines spiritual welfare? Who says porn is bad for the spirit? Sure, Christians may believe this, but over 70% of the world is non-christian. A good number of people are atheistic or agnostic. There's alot of people who seem to think that morals have to be enforced by law. Not everybody shares the same morals. Try to be open minded.

I can just hear it now: "We're going to fly you past the moon, and then... uh... you're gonna just keep going... maybe"

Next, space isn't known for it's friendly environments. if you want to know what a human being in space feels like, stick a marshmallow into a vacuum chamber. Add to that the fact that the temperature of other planets is either really, really hot or really, really cold, but never even close to being habitable. And then there's atmospheric pressure, gravity, and food and water, and all these other things you'd have to think of when nasa accidentally shoots you at the wrong planet and loses contact with you until you were Lost in Space
