  1. Playing well with others on Ask Microsoft's Linux Lab Manager · · Score: 0

My biggest complaint with MS isn't that it's code is closed source (I'm a SysAdmin, not a developer), but that it doesn't play well with other open standards. How concerned are you in your position with interoperability and adherence to open standards? Has their been any change at MS regarding this? Thanks.

  2. Re:Man flamebait or what. on RealNetworks Invests in Legitimizing Free Music · · Score: 0

Seriously. I found especially annoying the comment that I don't use the service, so how good can it be. I've been using Rhapsody for well over a year now, and it is in fact a great service. They are also going to offer a new service the that will couple Rhapsody along with a Napster-like offering that will allow you to fill a device with all the music it can fit, addressing the services only real flaw, which was that you needed a PC to use the service.

  3. Solaris is where it is today because of Linux. on Solaris vs Linux Continues · · Score: 0

I found it interesting that almost all of the Solaris features that Eric used to back his arguement are new. It looks like Solaris 10 will probably kick ass, in part due to many of the features that Eric mentioned, such as dtrace, zones and zfs. That said, would those features even exist if Linux hadn't appeared on the scene? I think Sun was resting on its laurels in the mid to late 90s. They were in a position of pretty much dominating the data center UNIX market, and it wasn't until Linux scared the daylights out of them that this started to change.
I'm looking forward to working with Solaris 10, but I have no doubt that half the reason it's as good as it will be is because of linux.

  4. Light is right on Is the Linux Desktop Getting Heavier and Slower? · · Score: 0

It is a little disconcerting, especially since a few years ago one of the most oft-quoted reasons given for using Linux is that you could use it on older hardware that couldn't use the latest version of Windows. Sadly, I think this happens with most software projects over the long time. Stay around long enough and keep adding features, and it eventually leads to bloatware. I think maybe some of the distributions could learn something from Mozilla project. In addition to offering Mozilla, they also have Firefox, the streamlined browser. I'd be nice to see a Fedora Lite or something like that.
Of course the real question is, what's taking up all that memory? Is it the new 2.6? The newer versions of GNOME and KDE? I tend to think the later rather than the former, but I really haven't given it much thought until now. Perhaps we need a new lightweight desktop/window manager, or maybe we should keep some of the old ones around.

  5. Re:The Office.NET Test on Mono and dotGnu: What's the Point? · · Score: 0

Hits the nail on the head. This should be mod'ed up to 5. To this I would add the following: if you look at Mono as a way to run .Net apps on Linux, if it can accomplish it, it would be a major feat. However, to expect Mono to become a development platform is both foolish and wrongheaded. Foolish in the since that there are currently tools with allow the same cross-platform functionality (java) and also because you can bet that anyone developing .Net for primarily a Windows environment will use MS tools, not open sources. It's also wrongheaded in that it would push people to use MS technology, a good portion of which is propietery. I agree with the Register article: considering all the effort, what's the point.

  6. Pretty smart for amazon. on Politicians For Sale... On Amazon · · Score: 0

I have to say, I think this is a great idea. Amazon is making it easier for it's customers to donate to a candidate, which could also help their business by bring new customers to their site. It's altruistic and self-serving at the same time. It will be interesting to see at the end of the campaign how much funds get generated through this.

  7. Re:Standard cynical response on Video Games Boost Visual Skills · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Exactly. Of course you forgot to mention that playing catch might actually keep you in shape, whereas playing video games will help you get fat. I guess it all depends on what you're priorities are.

  8. This isn't the way they are fighting piracy on Bon Jovi Tries New Approach To Fight Piracy · · Score: 1

I would imagine that they aren't the first arist to do this, but if you pre-purchase the cd at amazon, you get access to it via a streaming feed. Unfortunately I think you need MS Media Player.

What's interesting, though, is that you get access to the entire album several weeks before its released, which is another cool way of promoting the purchase of the CD, especially for fans who would buy it when it was release anyway. And yes, I am a Bon Jovi fan, and yes, I already made my purchase.
