I use Free Pascal on my Mini which gives me access to existing Delphi code as well as native interfaces. (Code Warrior Mac/Carbon code is easily converted, as Carbon headers come with it)
I have ported some GUI apps using Lazarus (Lazarus.freepascal.org), but the Carbon native port is not ready, and these run under XDarwin.
True. However the use of such optimizations is shifting. I usually get more in making malloc application specifically optimized then by mucking with assembler.
However there is some Image recognition stuff where I still use (SSE-) asm.
One external 80 GB disc, and one backup. And the nominal fee (as correctly pointed out by the previous poster) can be quite high. (hey, I have to burn and send you 20 DVDs. nominal fee based on a very low Eur15/hr is Eur 100).
I'm not a GPL fanboy as a BSDer, but this is a non issue.
Not unlike early C strings. Keep in mind that one of the first things GNU did when the project started was mandate all strings to be dynamically allocated to avoid build in length troubles. Unix tradition till then (mid eighties) was not unlike (actually way older) pascal code, except for the separator used (space padding vs char(0)
I agree with the other users that the pascal rant is without merit. Sure, real old skool pascal was limited and dumb, but believe me, you don't want to know the avg level of pre eighties C code either.
The funny part is what x86 would have to do with it? The x86 ABI of Mac OS X (which is SYSV like) preclude the usage of ordinary Windows tools, and getting a OSX/x86 targeting toolchain based on GCC is (slightly) harder than getting a PPC one has been.
Sensasionalist piece. Hanging is too good for them:-)
Afaik _paid_ Sun engineers did quite a lot of work on Gnome/GTK2 localisation and disability support
Still, 1000 Dollar grants in total for OpenSSH is meagre. Very meagre. So despite that I take everything what Theo says with a grain of salt, there seems to be some point in it.
Well, I think we can short about that. Easiest is to make a paralel to other media.
All books and movies with the same lead character ? Of course not. Since the "attributes" and behaviour you need for each world are different. (and the story already mentions that a bit)
I don't have to use windows either ? What kind of an argument is that? And yes, I know the difference between a window manager, a widget set and the final renderer, but in practice, except for some amateur stuff they are pretty inseparable on Windows.
I just want to be able to use windows with a bit less latency and a bit less memory use. (IE is 40-55 MB, though only about 25MB of that is part of "the system" that I hope to get rid off)
For the record, before somebody accuses me of being a Microsoft Serf: my slowest *nix machine is a 40MHz Quadra AV, 2nd slowest a 110MHz Sparcstation 5 (both NetBSD) and I have run 4.2BSD on *old* hardware.
I run Slackware 8.1 on a Proliant 1500, because it is pretty much the only distro/version that supports booting with only floppy emulation.
I checked the article, hoping to see some realistic story about how the current main distro's fair on a bit older hardware, and to e.g. see a minimal value for e.g. a FC4 with KDE or so.
I was pretty disappointed when it took the specialist distro PoV (Ok, due to historical sympathies, I still count Slackware as a main distro).
How would you think Slashdot readers would react if Microsoft published a review with the claim in the opposite direction using a cut down XP ?
Most companies don't even allow.doc's to send out of the door, due to the embedded history. Some even with termination of contract as (worst) consequence if you do.
Only causes a lot of retraining and angered employees, and the typical Delphi shops (departmanets) after a while quickly abandonned Java again, at the first point where the Java solution was ore troublesome than Delphi (read components availability, performance, lowlevel interfacing)
Maybe except for projects with a more company wide scope.
Problem is though that Delphi is getting more and more expensive (Eur 1000 for the minimal versions, and 500 per upgrade that often doesn't add that much for win32).
Correction to self, Women are roughly as likely to access internet from home or the internet.
The assumption of the report seems to be more that the general statement isn't as general in the article, and only goes for certain categories, like health and religion, none of which surprise me much, (see e.g. contents and subjects of women's magazines)

Fix the Mac to boot up so that Terminal auto opens, and she'll see it is still all about BASH :_)

One would expect that Entreprise customers could set this anyway they want via Group Policy
I really ask why those sites bother giving Apple free publicity at all. Run a few iRiver and Zen reviews ?

explorer.exe is, and parts of IE are integrated.
The ability to display html on the desktop background (as introduced by win98) proves this.
Hmm, good, could decrease 2k/XP UI latency maybe?
Like the -lite series of products.

Just a curious question, where do you get your opinion/facts/observation from?
( ) because you actually ported a larger app (say 200kloc or so) from 1.x to 2.0,
( ) from comparison of superficial announcements and specs?
No offense intended, but portability on paper is way different than in practice.
Most companies don't even allow
Indeed. The problem with subscription games that
- if you earn money (read: have a (nearly) fulltime job), you don't have time to spend enough time gaming to make the subscription worthwhile.
- if you have the time (college, unemployed), you don't have the money.
So I wonder what public they are actually targeting with this? Bankrobbers? Time and Money
Had to go through that once. Delphi -> Java.

Also see Lazarus as crossplatform OSS equivalent http://lazarus.freepascal.org/
The best win32 tool: Delphi
Good OSS alternative: http://lazarus.freepascal.org/

IMHO bugzilla is total overkill for small internal use. Mantis is way easier to setup and work with.
Or simply that a higher percentage of women have office-jobs ?
Try Lazarus, http://lazarus.freepascal.org/
