Well, it depends on what kind of music you listen to.
Classical albums: 6-8 songs/CD (longer songs) Rock albums: 10-14 songs/CD Rap/Hip Hop albums: 18-22 songs/CD (lots of short skits)
It seems more realistic to charge for the whole download of an album or charge by file size. Keep in mind that these things can always be exploited (a band puts a few seconds of blank space at the end of each song to get a few extra cents from each download). Also, think about hidden tracks. I don't want to pay for 15:00 of silence.
I'm sorry. You must have mistaken me for someone who didn't know what they were talking about. I was responding to the post by JHT which said that people shouldn't be able to leach off of other people for their music. That's right, I think that people should "*demand*" things in return for pirated music.
No, I don't think I'm doing an "honorable" thing. I'm not really sure what your point is there, but I would like to know. Next time, please respond with an actual viewpoint, instead of just calling me a "fucking moron". Then maybe we can discuss an issue here, instead of just hiding behind our computer screens for safety. Get a club and beat myself over the head with it? This is a discussion message board. Lets discuss something. You're in high school, right?
"In a way, I'm glad Napster is being shutdown. At the very least it will stop these uneducated leaches from abusing a good thing."
props
I agree. I am in support of music trading, not music leaching. I support ratio FTP sites and will gladly pay a 1:3 for a good song or album. This way, it is no different than trading rocks or stickers or baseball cards. Of course, there is the argument that it is different because you don't have to give anything up, but you do provide someone with a song or album. Selling goods isn't about what the customer loses, it's about what the reciever recieves. Thats my take, anyway. Any thoughts on that?
Given, there is a certain power that comes with posting a slashdot article (see recent geekflavor and SETI@home PCI card articles), I think that this boycott is a bit too much for a lot of slashdotters to take. It's too easy to just visit a website and read an article because it was posted here. When you ask people to give up hearing new music for a while, I think that most are going to turn a deaf ear (or blind eye or whatever).
Personally, if I want to go buy a CD, I'm going to go buy it. If I want to check a CD out before I make a commitment, I'll FTP it and hear it that way. Does anyone else feel left out of this whole battle of principle? It seems to me that I'm not even effected this thing. I dare to proclaim that MP3s will always exist, in some form. Whether it be on FTP, or Gnutella, or OpenNap, you will always be able to get free music.
It looks to me (from the dedication) that Joel passed on July 11th. I'd have to assume that a funeral has already been held or will never be held. But I'm sure that his family/friends would still appreciate your condolances if you can find them.
Please cite a source for your statistics. 50% of all executioned death row inmates were innocent? If you can cite me a source that is more respectable than "Howard Stern - 1999, on his radio show", then I will believe it. I'm sure that there has been at least one innocent person put to death, but 50% sounds a bit sharp.
Okay, I realize that the Texas teasing will never cease, but I just get tired of being stereotyped (but your right, I'd better get used to it). I just think it's sad that when I introduce myself as being from Texas, the usual response is "oh, so what do you think about the death penalty?"
Just realize that Texans have a lot of pride in our state. I've been in Michigan for 3 months and still don't know what the state flag looks like. That's odd to me. So please remember when you joke with a Texan about the state, they will want to take it seriously (most likely). Thats all. I now subject myself to whatever heckling you can give.
If you think that Texans hate you, what's so much better about you hating Texans?
"there was very little of the "i hate n*ggers" mentality and oodles of the "i have nothing against 'african-amurricans'...but..." "
What mentality are you talking about? But what? I have lived in Austin all my life and have no idea what you are talking about. Maybe we come from different parts of town (you went to the big W, right? not me) or maybe I would have to be "African-Amurrican" to understand.
P.S. Austinites don't hate Texas. Please don't speak for all of us. luckman
That is purely an assumtion on your part. Just becuase they were appointed by him, doesn't mean that they are his hand puppets.
In Texas, we don't fuck around with someone's life. That means that every death row inmate is given years to appeal his/her case before they are put to death. That's also why if you take a life in a violent crime, you're going to lose yours.
I realize that it's the principle of the thing that causes controversy, but just because they take away Napster, doesn't mean that they will take away MP3s. There will always be things like Gnutella for everyone to get their favorite music. And how would the government go about shutting down the thousands of FTP servers there are all over the world. As long as CD's exist, and someone has a copy of MusicMatch or AudioCatalyst, there will always be MP3s.
It was the same thing with GeekFlavor. I checked it after/. posted the news yesterday and it was normal. Later that day it was a LARGE colored text drawing of the Linux penguin. Last time I checked it is a message expaining that "You've reached a server that is not registered or is unconfigured. Please contact your service provider if you believe this to be in error". Whether its a real message or not I don't know. You can't hide anything from slashdotters. Just goes to show you that 100,000 geeks can't be wrong (especially when they call out "hoax!").
This makes me wish I had some moderation points to burn. "Off-Topic"
It seems that someone always has to bring up some controvertial subject for everything. I just think thet I'm lucky and most of them get moderated to a -1, so I don't see them.
Thanks a lump for furthering the stereotype that Texans are a bunch of unremorseful, 6-gun wielding cowboys who have nothing better to do than kill things. The fact is, if you've ever been put to sleep (for an operation, dentistry, etc.), then you've felt as much pain as any deathrow inmate put to death in Texas since the introduction of the lethal injection. And how much pain did the pregnant mother that the guy stabbed to death feel? Hmmm...
I find it interesting that you can speak for some of the greatest artists in history (including the entire renaissance movement) in saying that they created to pay the bills. Do you honestly think that Van Gogh woke up every morning and thought "oh well, I need some money, I'd better paint some sunflowers". The fact of the matter is that you weren't there when they made their creations and you could not see what was in their hearts at the time of their creations' conception. You can't assume that becuase they got money for their art means that they wouldn't have done it for free.
Remember the story about Michaelangelo? The Pope (at the time) kept rushing him to finish the Sistine Chapel, so Michaelangelo painted the Pope on the ceiling and put devil horns on him. Do you think he was worried about compensation? He wanted to do it his way, and probably could have been put in prison for that stunt (most likely without pay).
Maybe this would be enough hardware to run a smooth version of the Daikatana demo! I figure something that large might be able to get that game up to about 20 fps.

I guess that's one way to do it...

Yes, artists do like to eat meals, and they do like to live in houses, and do like to occasionally have a car or bike or walking shoes to get around in. Professional artists have needs just like all of us. But just because they need the money doesn't mean that it is the reason they create art. If the music industry crashed today and the Foo Fighters had to stop recording and touring and had to get real jobs (instead of a fairy-land job that I will never be able to get), they would have to find other ways of making a living. But I can guarantee you that Dave Grohl would not stop playing his guitar.
Artists create because it is a part of them. They create because to them, it is like breathing. They can only go so long without doing it, and the longer they go without creating, the harder it burns inside of them
Personally, I am offended that Time-Warner thinks that their copyrights are the backbone of our culture. I say the backbone of our culture is exactly what they are trying to prevent the spread of... art.
I don't think that space is as crowded as you think it is. It's quite a bit bigger than you can imagine, and even though there are a BUNCH of satellites out there, they could "steer" around foreign objects given enough time, right?
I think that you have gone to a bit of an extreme here. Americans in general are very closed minded about international issues, as most of us are products of the media and the influences of our government. It's true, if you go up to someone on the street and say the word "communist" to them, they would probably respond with the word "bastard". Thats what we learned in school, that communism is bad and it must be stopped. But communism isn't bad, it's just a way of running a country, like any other. But it is different, in that it doesn't allow it's people to express views that don't agree with what it has set. People do get thrown in prison for expressing their beliefs and the point of this "Ask/." is to let people know how to keep their friends out of jail while they are in an "oppressive" country. Thats all. out.
How about they visit Springfield to investigate some alien findings, which turns out to be from the cast of Futurama. Maybe too complicated, but without Duchovny, they will need a ratings boost.
Those are interesting word choices. Are you implying that a computer made from parts (as opposed to a one piece system that is non-upgradeable) is automatically made from cheap parts? I can buy fans that were "designed by engineers" and are very quiet, as well as a hard drive. All I was trying to say is that just because something is quiet doesn't mean anything. It could be a quiet piece of poo. (It could also be a quiet high-performance IBM server)
Maybe it's not making as much noise becuase it's not doing anything. High performance creates heat, and heat leads to the need for it's own displacement, which leads to fans and noise. The last time I checked, a big turd didn't make much noise either.

Your favorite type of music is the only real music around, and everything else is just noise.
