  1. Cablevision ROCKS! on VPN Clients Not Allowed On Residential Service · · Score: 2, Informative

After reading about this kind of shit on a daily basis, I'm so happy I'm with Cablevision. It looks like they are the last decent broadband ISP in the country. Grok this: download speeds between 3000-5000 kbps, uploads around 900kbps, and I'm talking peak time. Semi-decent tech support. Formally they don't allow servers but from what I hear they won't enforce it unless you generate enormous amounts of traffic. They are cool with Linux and other esoteric OSes (they won't provide support, but hey, who needs OS support). It's DHCP, but my IP stayed the same for the last 6 months. And all this for $30 if you have their TV package ($40 if you don't). I'll tell ya, if you're in NY, NJ or CT it can't get any better....

Don't get me wrong, you don't HAVE to use an IDE. The command line compiler is quite good at reporting errors correctly, better than gcc IMHO. If you're a hardcore command line fan, then you can live happily with it. But personally I like to spend my time hunting bugs in logic not syntax errors, that's why I prefer JBuilder.

  6. Re:Java - the perverse language on JBoss Founder Interview · · Score: 1

    A couple of suggestions:
Get a GUI IDE, I'd suggest JBuilder, it does syntax checking on the fly while you type. I never had a syntax error at compilation after I got it. You can download the personal edition from Borland for free. It's written in Java, so it will run happily on Linux
Download the Java tutorial from javasoft.com. It's the best tutorial available. It's also available in print, however the printed edition tends to lag a bit.
Download the full SDK documentation and keep it for reference. You're going to need it.
The entry barrier is low in my opinion, at least for somebody who's familiar with C++. Once you start to grok it, you'll like it.
OH, and there are several documents describing the JVM (which if I remember correctly is a Stack machine, so it doesn;t have registers). Just browse javasoft.com

Well, from my experience the problems with the voice over IP come from lost packets and delays. Bandwidth is not an issue here. As a matter of fact Aplio Rave uses the G723 codec at 5.3 kbps. And if your network doesn't suffer from the above mentioned flaws, the quality is quite good (i.e. cell phone quality).

As for the difference between software and hardware solutions, well there isn't any. In fact the only thing you could reasonably put in hardware is the codec.

Usually, when overclocking, the peltier element is used in combination with a badass radiator & fan, which of course, will generate even more noise.
