  3. Re:Why so much hostility to this? on Announcing Slashdot Subscriptions · · Score: 1

I have seen the subscription model coming to /. for a while and see no problem. Since I've started reading this site, I've learned a LOT about computers, operating systems, legal issues re digital matters and much, much more. Information posted has helped with my transition to Linux, which I appreciate daily, been useful to answer questions about BeOS, **ix and even answered a lot of issues with Windows. The **AA issues make more sense and of course the links to Science, Anime and many other topics too numerous to mention. Honestly, I'm amazed that a price like 5 DOLLARS which is about the price of a 6 of Jolt is generating venomous comments. Speaking for myself and only myself and not looking for flames, feel free if you need to, I'll be subscribing as soon as there's an alternative to PayPal. Much better that small cost than to see /. go away or offering less content than is currently available.
My hat's off for continued success of this site as I think it would be sorely missed were it to disappear.

Not surprisingly, you've posted as an Anonymous Coward. Who wouldn't be embarrassed by this nonsense?

I clicked the link and found it offensive in so many ways I don't have the desire to get into.

Unbalanced panel and audience from the Left is the least I can say and it's been pulled off the site with the following apology from the General Director of the BBC, Greg Dyke.

    "
The most recent edition of Question Time was a special programme which discussed the implications of the attacks in the United States - in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

The panel included: Lord Ashdown, the former Liberal Democrat leader Tam Dalyell, MP, father of the House of Commons; Phil Lader, recent US ambassador to London and the Independent columnist, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown.

The programme attracted a large number of complaints from members of the public after which the BBC's Director General, Greg Dyke, issued an apology. Details can be found here.

To avoid the risk of further offence at this sensitive time, this edition of the programme is no longer available for viewing here.

However, if you have already seen the programme and want to join Question Time's internet debate you can email your views on the topics discussed in the programme to: questiontime@bbc.co.uk

Your emails will be published here."

This despicable attack by backward, filthy animals has killed innocent people from over SIXTY countries. There's a good chance that your countrymen and women were directly affected.

Maybe it doesn't bother you to see people ruthlessly attacked as apparently you don't have much regard for people in general.

May the savages responsible burn in hell for eternity.

Exactly. You are NOT a citizen nor live here. I think if something like this happened where you live, you might just have a different opinion. That is if you have half a brain and some sort of heartbeat going on.

Pacifistic platitudes have been used so often in the past and that's just what savages take advantange of. It's apparent that olive branches do NOT work when you're dealing with a, fortunately small and sick, population of the world. Normally the UN does have success in their efforts, however, there is a demented segment of people to which human life is irrelevant. Usually and not surprisingly, religious zealotry is the mechanism that's used to get these people motivated to kill innocent people as they regard their own lives as easily replaceable and irrelevant. They are cowards and it's evidenced in their target, a massive building that houses workers of all levels. If these terrorists had any real bravery, they'd attack a military installation. Notice how rarely that happens. No, they kill innocent men, women and children in a place that has at least an even level of visitors as it has workers.

A peaceful co-existence is possible with at least somewhat like-minded human beings this is true. This is probably what has kept the human race alive despite the amount of nuclear weapons on the planet. At some point, some sort of an arrangement can be made. However, when you're dealing with savages who are single-minded in their hatred, the only response that they understand and normally respect is a fast, severe response. I agree with the person that posted that whoever is responsible should have their disgusting, rank corner of the world turned into a parking lot. Once that happens, i'm SURE you will see terrorism die down markedly.

On checking the permissions on 'mount', I noticed on my machine that it was set up as setuid and changed it. What other executables can I check for?

Sorry about the newbie question, I recently switched to Linux and I'm trying to learn something. :)
