Is it any surprise that getting the latest operating system is going to force you to upgrade your computer to see peak performance? NO! Microsoft and Intel make a LOT of money on planned obsolescence, there's no reason (that they recognize) to improve their record.

  7. Doesn't sound easy... on Putting the Odyssey Spacecraft in Martian Orbit · · Score: 2, Interesting
Geez, I'd hate to be one of the guys in the control room on this one. With a) variably dense atmosphere, and b) major guesswork on how the heat will affect the spacecraft, I wouldn't be all that surprised if c) the ship failed! Also, can you imagine how difficult it is to "think ahead" and predict what's going on when the data you're looking at has taken a few minutes to get here from Mars? I guess that's why people consider rocket science difficult.

I didn't see any real mention of the martian winds in this article, don't they get up to hundreds of miles per hour in the upper atmosphere? Couldn't that seriously screw up an aerobraking attempt? Or is that just a drop in the bucket compared to the speed of the spacecraft (which I didn't see in the article, but can probably be found on NASA's site - too bad I'm lazy)?

This definitely gives pause when considering the difficulty of landing manned craft on the surface. With so many variables, you're almost guaranteed that something is going to go wrong. I'd hazard a guess that contingency planning is high on NASA's list right now!

    Insert funny tagline here.

I think not having an audit trail for vote counts saved to disk is a serious flaw. Aside from the possibility of a trojan being installed in the vote counting or recording software, floppies, hard drives, zip's (or whatever) do fail. The whole point of a new voting system is to INCREASE the number of legitimate votes that get counted.

I think a modified way of doing this would be to have the touch screen system print out the vote record on a card, that was then turned in (in a little blinder envelope) to the vote counting staff. The cards could be quickly counted my optical machine (with mechanical creation of votes, should have a VERY low failure rate) and provide the benefit of giving the voter a chance to review their card for inaccuracies.

Yes, deregulation is leading to higher power bills, but the root cause is increasing demand for electricity. California is in the midst of an electrical emergency (they lit the state Christmas tree for only 5 minutes!), where the total power used is within 5-7 % of available. Anytime you have scarcity of resources, the price goes up (supply and demand are powerful forces nearly beyond human comprehension). Power companies will respond by increasing capacity, but that's a slow process.

To address the second paragraph of your post, it seems like Apple, IBM and Motorola are all able to cooperate, get along, etc. when there isn't much money involved. When Apple goes through one of it's upswings, the three major players on the hardware side start bickering, leading to the kind of BS we're seeing now. Why haven't faster G4 processors been made available? Because Motorola doesn't want IBM to get the contract to produce them.

These three businesses are behaving in a manner typical of most big business, cooperate only as long as there is a significant advantage, then stab each other in the back when you see the possiblity of more money. Wake up boys! You'll kill the market (again) if you don't cooperate, innovate, and SELL FAST COMPUTERS!
