I don't let any device I own save purchasing info -it's just asking for trouble. It helps you save money anyway because entering in the info each time makes you consider if you really want that song or game that will only bring a couple minutes' joy.
I like that logic for removing large notes. The US seems to be going the other way, trying to remove pennies from circulation on the grounds that nothing costs a single penny anymore, even making them costs more than a penny. They hit resistance from Abraham Lincoln lovers though.
Agreed. Remember the 1990s? All the 900 numbers advertised to kids in commercials? This is the same deal. The people that setup these things deserve to be flayed, but it's the responsibility of parents to teach their kids responsibility.
Indeed, I like the idea of Bitcoins, but also don't think it will succeed. I don't think it will catastrophically collapse, just that it will never grow much larger than it is right now and eventually fade away as more successful versions arise.
Haha, hence the reason I said "upset" instead of "angry". Upset means you take an interest and are not 'happy' with a situation. I would investigate the reason and decide if I was angry after the assessment.
Hey, I'd be upset if someone put wear and tear on my hardware no matter what the reason. As for Bitcoins, at least they're a new idea, and at their worst they're still pretty harmless. I haven't seen you try to come up with a better global economic system.
So the electric version will be stronger and have better performance than the gasoline version?
-original US version had only 130 HP. Must have a $200k price tag.
Look at all this discussion about Windoze. "Change for change's sake", I think not. Change to stir up discussion, thus creating advertising through blogs and developer interviews explaining the changes, I think so.
There's also an 'off mode' that will greatly extend battery life. Since we all know we're not turning our smartphones off, except to reboot them, I'm glad this feature is being developed and am shocked it's not standard practice yet. Than you to the other/. readers who pointed out the apps for controlling these functions.
First, plan ahead and don't expect to get this done right away. Second, consider power management too. If you're lucky enough to be given a power station (like me) with a switch for each 110 V outlet that's great because they're generally expensive but VERY EASY TO DYI. Third, cut everything. Seriously, they're your cables (or your responsibility at a company) so cut them if they're way too long. Many people reading this already cut CAT-5 to custom lengths and that's not anywhere near as complicated as 2 and 3 wire power supply cords. In all likelihood everyone can dig up a spare IEC (common PC & monitor power standard) cable so just go ahead and try it. This only requires the most basic soldering skill and some electrical tape -or heatshrink tubing if you have it. Cut the middle of the cable out to get the length needed (plus one loop around your palm for slack) then solder the two end back together. If you need something longer down the road, that's OK because these cables are very easy to come by. Now, obviously I don't recommend cutting video cables (besides coax) as even if you're good at it the risk of signal pollution is high, but leaving power cords too long is a preventable danger. You know what the other name for a loop of wire is? A HEATER! Yep, to remind you of grade school physics, current passing through a loop of wire encounters greater resistance than if the wire were strait, the energy loss is expressed through a stronger electromagnetic field and heat -two of the three most damaging things to electronics. If you have a laptop, and you know you'll have it for a while, try to invest in a second power adapter for it that you can custom fit to your desk at home. This will reduce the risk of tripping on it, cut down on clutter, and lets the other power adapter stay packed in your travel case so that it's even easier to pack up your laptop.
You can make this case for maharajah, maybe -I personally haven't decided there. But the problem with other drugs is this, the self-destructive are not limited to "self". People on meth and crack will KILL OTHER PEOPLE in order to get another hit and sometimes for no damn reason at all! Also, like PeanutButterBreath pointed out, hard-core addicts will be like vortexes pulling down their kids (all 12 of them because they have no foresight to use birth control) and the tax revenues gained would only go to support the now completely useless addicts who contribute nothing to society.
Would legalizing pot help cut down usage of "harsher" drugs? Maybe, honestly I don't have the means nor time to solve that question, but I don't need any research to tell me that legalized meth and cocaine would be a disaster.
You missed the point of the little joke. It would have been better as a cartoon of a developer looking at the new interface and thinking it was only for smartphones/ tablets and having to be told it was for desktop/ laptop chip architecture.
I agree with your conclusion and was considering just sticking to win7 for a while longer. Personally I have it slimmed down to the point of being just XP with the fun virtual folders tool. Unless win8 uses significantly LESS resources than 7, I see no reason to switch anytime soon.
Eh, that last comment was pretty pointless as I'll switch back to Linux as soon as my current netbook is supported better or I get a new PC.
OO was a fun beta to play with but not good enough as a replacement, then it got better, then it got good enough to replace M$ Office except for a couple features unique to powerpoint and excell still. Then, oracle:( Now we have LibreOffice, try it, it's actually pretty good.
Agreed,
Tablets can be extremely useful for selected tasks and fairly useful for many other things. I'm glad to see some with A/V outputs and native features similar to netbooks. I'll be really happy when tablets (and most laptops/ netbooks) adopt modular component standards like desktop PCs. Hopefully the day will come when you can buy all the various parts of tablets from different manufacturers of YOUR CHOOSING for the configurations you want -and I hope it's before I have to replace my netbook.
The best leverage ever for switching people over to Linux finally. "You're going to have to learn a new interface anyway, might as well learn one that will be around for more than a couple years."
What's wrong with my 2.5 year old Atom netbook? Nothing, it's my primary PC and it cost $330 (in early 09), has a 7h (honest) battery life, USB, SD, and VGA output.
NOTE, that was just a little jab at the interface. Reports are that the backend is OK so far and hopefully they will create a separate desktop GUI for it as well.
If I wanted to develop smartphone apps, I would go with one of the more established platforms like iOS or Android. Windows 8 just doesn't have the market share for phones....What, it's for desktops? They can't be serious.
Sounds good to me, but I'll just stick to devices that don't save purchase info at all.

I have both of those in my kitchen. Had to do something with all those cabinets.
Um, while I would guess half or more of /.ers know what they are, the vast majority of the world's populous still doesn't know what Bitcoins are.

I'm pretty sure representing yourself as North Korea had something to do with that moderation too.
Yes, after further research i found this: http://hothardware.com/News/Microsoft-Windows-8-GUI-Will-Be-Just-Another-App/ I hope they provide both and not drop one -or make it a $100 add-on

There's a non-profit nearby that takes e-waste. I've already brought them 250+kg of old PC parts -mailing all that would be a nightmare!
