My company *used* to be an ISP. Our mail server was flagged an open-relay and instead of upgrading our crappy ass version of Sendmail to allow our customers to send e-mail to Pacbell customers (who was blocking us) we just decided to get out of the ISP business all together.
This definitely a feature. Here's what's going on:
For years Microsoft has been creating operating systems that crash all the time. At first the average user might think: "Hey! This is a bug". Well, they're wrong. Microsoft does this as an added bonus to their products. Do you really think that a company with so much money and so many developers cannot create a stable OS?
IBM, seeing that this added feature obviously creates more revenue, thought: "Hey! Let's add a feature in our hard drives, that makes the drive crash all the time. That way the users OS can crash all the time along with the hardware crashing all the time."
When will the Linux community ever learn that it's not stability that makes money, it's the way you present it.
...Stuff like this really brightens up my day. I don't have AIDS, I don't know anybody who does have AIDS (although there are a few people who I wouldn't mind getting the disease and dying a slow painfull death), so this story really shouldn't affect me. Forget sex, just give me science doing positive things and I'll be happy!!!
"if we gave these teaching positions the pay-level and respect they deserve it would be much easier to attract Doctoral-level people to fill them."
Isn't that the reason why most elementary school teachers are right out of college. Because it's easy to do. It's an easy job that doesn't need a doctorite to teach. Doctorites should be left to....well....doctors, not elementary school teachers.
Besides, I'd rather have an illiterate person teach my kid than a 1337357. The latter would slap the kid for not knowing how to spell supercalafragelisticexpealodocious and the illiterate would encourage.

Why does it even matter what one company says is the percent of servers that run Linux or have been shipped with Linux?
Does anyone really care if the number is 8% or if it is 80%?
I run Linux as a server because it works better than anything else I've tried. I run Linux as a desktop because it works better than anything else I've tried. Why all the numbers and why do they even matter?
You kids have it easy these days. When I was your age I had to walk to school uphill both ways and have sex to keep the human race alive.
Now you just wait for a blue light special at K-mart, shell out $29.99 and you're a father.
Yes you can. Read this:

I guess you can buy direct into foreign markets, or you can buy ADR's, which are some sort of vouchers.

I remember making little bb shooters out of a mechanical Bic pencil and a rubberband....(sigh)...

that's why there's stable, testing and unstable.
the poor or destined to have monochrome
We're lazy. It's also not what we're focusing in on anymore.
Guess we should've just waited out ORBZ's demise.

On a side note, I have the longest uptime of any machine in the office.

Pretty soon whole pages will become one big clickable ad......hhhmmm......
At least that's what my friend from Redmond said.

funny how the city off of Cuba hasn't had as much coverage as the one just found off the Nile.
It seems to me like the one off of Cuba would have a greater media interest, guess I don't need to know about it.

A good read.
Art Bell had discussion about it as well.
I'd rather be considered life threatening than a sheep.
I can't wait to tell that one.
That's when I go to Canada.
Our company doesn't need e-mail that badly.
If anything goes wrong I can just blame Sun, right?
