  1. Sun actually listening to developers-java.net on New Desktop Features Of Next Java · · Score: 1

    I've been on the java.net site.>/a>

Its a good mix of Sun developers and java users. I'm thinking of jumping back into java and been poking around that site to see what is new.

Its not all netbean either, Eclipse is giving good billing to.

The .net suffix is either coincidence or very ironic.

It also looks like an ipod shuffle sideways with a screen.

The poster has a valid point. Windows/Macos ran guis at a decent speed on hardware down to 200 mhz pentiums. Linux, especially desktop linux is getting bloated. There seem to be very very few "lite" desktop linuxes.

I have a old notebook with a fantastic screen I wanted to make a picture frame out of. Unfortunetly its a 150mhz maxed out with 24 megs of ram. I couldn't find a linux that could work with it. Back to Windows 95 it shipped with.

This is a patently BS law suit. Somethings not being explained. Here's why. At first the RIAA used the DMCA to get information from isps. No court, just a letter. Well a court ruled they can't do that anymore (I think some of the DMCA was struck down, lack of due process?).
Now the RIAA file lawsuits, send legal documents to isps to compell them to reveal information about customer at ip address x.x.x.x. ISPs don't want to be in contempt of court so they comply.

This behaviour would be very out of character.

  14. VPN is what RIAA /MPAA want you to do on RIAA Cracks Down on Internet2 File Sharing · · Score: 2, Informative

See, They (RIAA/MPAA) really really hated napster. Why? Everyone was on Napster, so if you looked for something you found it. easy, illegal, Cool.

Now they want to fragment the file sharing networks. They're not stupid, they know they can't stop pirating completely, the goal is to make it harder, less worthwhile so people who have limited time and a budget (working people) to figure out the p2p method de jour and will just pony up th 99 cents for a sure bet good copy.

If you make a network VPN with 10 of your friends that not a real problem for them, much like the mixed tape of yesteryear. Heck if you put your mp3 on a password protected web site and tell a few of your friends, they'll never find out.

If your "sharing" your files the the hundred of thousands of anonymous strangers, they have a problem.

Make it harder to find what you want,
1 by making people less likely to make content available (more leaches)
2 Making many smaller networks with not enough content.

The problem is mainly that setting up a server or p2p is republishing. Everyone is publishing stuff they don't own the copyright too. Expect the law will catch up at some point.

  17. Satellite vs internet radio on AOL and XM Joining Forces for Online Radio · · Score: 2

Its interesting, with the internet it would be relatively cheap to set up a "radio" station, compared with the huge overhead of launching satellites etc.

With wireless internet becoming more prevalant/cheaper over the next 10 years in suburban/urban areas, satelite radio could be obsolete in those areas (bumped by cheaper internet radio), so they need to get the brand and marketing out there. Its also cheap for the satelite radio stations to stream over the internet since they've already paid to "program" each station.

Interestingly enough you can listen to low quality streams already. Actually large difference in quality between an high quality MP3 and satelite radio is convincing enough for me not to subscribe when my XM trial is turned off. (I can tell the distance in a moving car with road noise etc..) Although the selection on satellite radio isn't bad, my collection is better..

  24. Someone has to say it.. Gentoo is taking mindshare on Record Low Turnout in Debian Leadership Election · · Score: 1

Ok I use neither gentoo or Debian. I typically use suse or mandrake when I'm using linux, because I'm used to them. I'm pretty much at MacOSX for most of my development.

I looked into debian.. I have to be honest, its doesn't seem trivial to install. The documentation seemed less polished the gentoos.

The main reason to get debian is apt-get. Its a beautiful thing after living in rpm dependency hell. Now Mac has fink/darwin ports. Gentoo has emerge. There are others as well that do almost as good a job.

Also as more and more linux distros emerge, the mind share of each decreases. Especially since there are easier to install debian based distros out there.

I'm of the mind that it looks worse for debian than it is. People are apt-getting there way to happiness and not thinking much about it, and not having to download completely new distros.

  25. Re:sould creators have some rights too.. on Supreme Court Takes Hard Look at P2P · · Score: 1

Lending a book or CD to a friend is basically publishing. Why should you be allowed to publish my stuff, if I hold the copyright?

Come on, common sense. There is a big difference between loaning a book for a short duration and allowing anyone with a computer to make copies of the book. BIG difference.

Some artists have tried to do just that, only to get bitchslapped by their record company. Turns out the record companies own the rights to everything the artist does, not the "creator".

Contracts between artists and record companies are what the problem is. Unfortunetly some contracts are old and out dated. And most are bad for the artist. Check ASCAP (Artists union) for advice before signing all your rights away and get a lawyer. Many artists are very desparate for money and sign anything without review.

How can Phish, DMB, primus, TMBG sell and give away concerts when record companies don't allow it?

    It's called "freedom"..........

What if I don't want to give away my photos for free? What about a musicians freedom to do what they want with there music (after years and years of practicing). The pendelum has swung to far and those rights are being trampled.

    There is a middle ground.
