I put up the original post.Answer to some questions.
p2p is publishing. So is putting up a web site. As such it not a bad thing to have all this publishing going on.
P2P isn't the problem, it the way its being used.
The problem is people putting stuff they shouldn't on P2P. It costs so little to do, and it seems so anonymous and harmless, but of course its not.
Oddly enough if I set up a network of "p2p" with friends and didn't let the public in, I probably wouldn't ever be called to task on it. I'm sure there are some closed networks on the internet. But that is limited compared to the public file sharing (sharing is stretching when you allow everyone to make copies)
Its the wholesale republishing of copyrighted works that is the problem. And there really is little to do to stop it.
You can't copy the cabinit and give it away for free can you.. Dumb analogy.
Your point is you should be allowed to do what you want with what you buy. I used to make tape copies of my cds/records to listen in my car. I don't think a single person was every sued for doing that.
The fact that stupid people decide to republish stuff they don't own means the industry and government will push more and more restrictive DRM uppon us, screwing those who just want to enjoy what they've bought.
It seems that p2p takes away rights out of those that create things and make them public. Be they songs or photos etc.
P2P is basically publishing. Why should you be allowed to publish my stuff, if I hold the copyright?
These rights go away with time when the copyright expires. (A really stupid long time, thanks congress)
If a creator wants to make something public domain then they can do that. If they want to paid for something they create, they should be able to do that too. (my photos are routinely hot linked as bloggers backgrounds and I don't care, so I don't sue)
Whats with the right to do what you want with whatever you want all of a sudden?
I read this earlier. If they're going to use java, they should at least make sure it works with GJC out of the box. The one Java alsmost all distros ship with.. So redhat et all. don't have to jump through hoops to get it installed.
I sometimes wish Linux had a application packaging system like MacOSX where you have the option of brining tons of libraries with you hidden under a file system pretending to be an app icon. It just works (most of the time). I'm tired of ldd.
I have to say, while C# is an ok language I just don't see the point of having mono without.net. Its going to drive developers to window (where the best tools/standard implimentation is).
The Open Source Community has no lack of projects for developers (gcc/vi/emacs/apache foundation).
Linux clearly needs better developemnt tools and more developers working on these unglamorous development tools. Projects like eclipse give me hope the first class development tools are comming to opensource. I fear C# even with Novell's $, is never going to be up to snuff with the ms version, always chasing, not living up to the write once run anywhere hope.
And with so many projects in need of help (gjc/ parrot(perl6)/gnustep) do we need more?
This reminds me of the disaster that is the dual GTK/KDE (QT) desktop libraries thats really put linux destop development in a crappy place. People really do want to cut and paste across applications, and not worry about 2 or more sets of windowing libraries. I know you can run a GTK app on KDE, but it doesn't seem to make for an easy end user experience. Its not bad to have multiple items, but at some point a winner should be clear, and everyone should move on (not linger like the dvd+/dvd- standard where the solution is to have dual format drives.)
Having seen some of the new Apple API's development stuff, I was blown away but what a company with a vision can do to leverage open source for development.
Judging from cable and satellite radio subscription fees just keep rising and rising. I would expect nothing less from the music rental services..
I have a feeling that renting your music will be harder and harder to get stuff you want. (like some bands charging more than 9.99$ for an itunes album..)
itunes "playlist" which users post there mixes is very clever. When you select a song, you can search for playlists with that song on it (more songs you might like..)
However the napster "try" part is a way to discover new music I might or might not shell out cash for. Then again alot of bands have sites with free downloadable mp3s..
If my free 3 month trial of XM radio has taught me anything (I bought a car), there is a lot of music out there I don't care for.
Can you immagine trying to encrypt 1 millions songs a day? Its going to take some serious hardware. Noone knew that itunes was going to fly so I'm betting they tried to make it cheaper by having the client encrypt the songs.
Apple seems to not care overly much about the DRM as long as most people are using it.
The gas electric hybrid is ingenious. You get great range and great gas mileage.
Electric only cars are in some ways a waste, because of lossed in electricity transmition and pollution at the plant, they might end up causing more pollution per mile than a gas car. Just its pollution somewhere else.
I had a MS mouse. It was optical and it worked great 5 buttons and a wheel. I loved it. Then the started working intermittantly, which ended the affair. It was the wire that had gone flakey....
Alas now logitek for me. Not as lovely but much more reliable.
Not a representative sample, although my friends MS mouse died in a similar way..I hope they've improved them
But 5 will come eventually. In the "Me TOO" world of web hosts, once one goes over , they'll all have to.
That or they'll just when cpanel/plesk or what ever the contol panel of the day supports it..
point taken- but your missing the irony..

Does ppc linux have java 1.5? Point taken, I bet those prize machines have osx on them though..
I'm not trying to flame, just pointing out the irony of the prizes. I find it funny. Its like a linux programming contest giving away MS visual studio!
ipod lounge is a great site, but always a little slow. And getting slower.. and slower..
I lived in MA and moved to NY on a temp assignment for the company's NY office. I didn't have to pay NY taxes as I was based in MA.
Then I got transfered to the NJ office and moved to NY.
NJ/NY have part time resident tax forms. MA has a partial year provision.
It worked out OK, but was confusing.
States typically charge if you have an employee working out of the office (based physically at).
When I worked in NY temporarily my home office was still MA so I didn't have to pay NY taxes. I was a MA employee.

Your right. I should have pointed out in my post p2p isn't a bad technology, it just is.
The way its being used it the problem. It has some great uses (linux distos on torrent is one).

You see the dilbert where the boss wants engineers to work for tips.
Laughable..
Buying direct is a better way. I try to buy cds at shows because I feel the artist gets more.
If you can promote your artists better than the big labels you go ahead.. You'll make $.
Why no one has set up a decent music review/sample site is beyond me. with "pod casted" reviews and samples that would be neat.
For what its worth itunes sells many small label bands.

This is what the modem was invented for!!..
56k should be fast enough..
Novel is paying developer to work on it. Have you seen Exclipse? IBM backing. Mozilla AOL backing.
Very few start out as "foundations" like eclipse and Mozilla ended up as. (Apache afaik is a foundation).
Coding Tools are low glamour not much praise projects, so it really helps to have some corporate backing.

This is great. Hopefully google/yahoo/hotmail will all add more inovative features and the same low low price (feeding you ads is the price you pay).
Computer companies do amazing things when there is competetion..

Your right.. Obviously a mistake on there part.

I agree with this post. Mp3 seems to be the only format supported everywhere. I've bought and won over 100 songs from itms.
.EXCEPT the songs I've bought off of Itunes music store.
My Tivo allows easy playing of all the songs in my itunes collection which is cool
My car plays mp3 Cds. This is cool. Except it can't play the songs I bought from the Itunes music store.
Yes I know I can burn them too plain music CD. But in the car i tend to like to have one CD filled with songs and just leave it in there.
When the DRM starts tripping you up, it gets annoying.
Someone should make a ie "plug in" that handdles ccs. We have a couple open rendering engines (geko/khtml)..
Could this be done?

This is only my experience. (of mirth and woe)

Who is moding around here...???
Ironically, Apples can't run the latest version of java which had been out for half a year. There stuck at 1.4.
So you win a computer you can't use to develop java with..
Damm thats sad..
