  1. Re:what about sun? on Microsoft Making Internet Appliance Chips · · Score: 1

Bottom line is microsoft controls 90% of the OS Market. Period. They're moving into the server space where they were unheard of before and laughed at, but now even BUY.com is a MS site.

SUN / IBM etc. are hanging in there, some even doing quite well as the need for servers has grown exponentially and they can sell reliable scalable solutions. But even in IBMs case we pay MS to put there software on our machines to sell, but used to compete (OS2) It will be interesting to see how MS does in the enterprise.

The only ones who have beeten MS are Palm and AOL. But notice that MS never gives up and MSN and new versions of CE are here..

Windows NT used to be called windows Nice Try, now its still sucks but its much better.

  2. Monopoly on Microsoft Making Internet Appliance Chips · · Score: 2

Only a monopoly can get away with this. They have many conflicts of interest, but people keep using them.

Think about the sonystation vs. the MS Xbox. Sony is still paying microsoft for windows while competeing with them in the console space.

Office software suites are another example of this problem. And we all know how well lotus and Borland did vs MS.

Why would you want to write any software knowing that if microsoft decides to release something similar they're going to leverage the OS to run you out of business?
Because about 80-90% of computers still run windows.
If there was a more viable alternative (large market share) I'm sure many companies would write software for them.

When someone violates the GPL slashdoters are outraged. I don't see any outrage for the musicians being stripped of there rights. They're was an interview of a small struggling musician who was surprised to find his music on napster.. He wasn't pleased.

What bothers me about this whole napster thing more than anything is all the people who think its Ok to download music and not pay for it and then hide behind the "RIAA is BAD".

NEWS FLASH: There are many small record companies and musicians/creative types should decide who/how there music/creations should be distributed. Its not your right /moral obligation to distribute it for these people and not compensate them. Even if the RIAA makes 2$ for the artists 1$ the artist still gets something, with napster they get nothing.

Image your company spends thousands promoting a new band only to have sales lost to napster. That sucks.

I think people should be personally responsible for there own actions and to that end I see more strict recording and copyright infringment laws coming soon.

The service whos stated purpose is the anonymous piracy of music is on shaky legal ground. (did you read the pdf?) They use the diamond player case as precident. If Napter inc. wern't trying to make a profit off others work it wouldn't be as big a deal.

(I tried to post this earlier...)

Ok here goes. There is nothing wrong with peer to peer file sharing. The problem is people are attracted to free music like flies on Sh*t. They can't control themselves and they download and download. These people need to think. What are they doing? What are the concequences. This woulndn't be a big deal if only a few people are distributing music.

Music should be free when the bands that make it decide it should be free and not ever else. It doesn't matter if they might sell more by giving it away. If a band gets signed they decide that the RIAA is the way they can make the most money/ get the most exposure then they should be allowed to do that.

A college friend of mine is in a band called "tobin bridge". They can't give away there mp3s (and they're not bad.). Many Many bands give away there MP3s for exposure, it hasn't changed anything. The masses just don't want them. They want highly produced music and they want it for free.

I used to be a photographer at a "college" newpaper (70,000 copies daily. I was the photo editor as well. In my wildest dreams I would not take a photo that we didn't pay for or get legitimately and use it in the paper (public and free distribution).

Napster is about getting music for free that you shouldn't have.

People that want to get music fill find other ways to get music for free, (ftp,GNUtella etc.) maybe a "company",aka NAPSTER, shouldn't be trying to profit from this piracy. That is what this is about in my mind

MP3.com should be more popular, as they have many unsigned bands. But its not. They're are other sites that give away "live" performances from phish and DMB that allow taping of there shows. These bands have made the descion and allow this taping and free distribution of there music to increase there mindshare. But it was the Bands choice and that is the way it should be.

If you want to make a mp3 copy of your CD I think you should be allowed. You should rip it yourself (roll your own?). I think if you run linux you should be allowed to view DVDs. Peer to Peer networking should be legal. I like MP3 streaming radio "shoutcasts".

Napster disturbs me beacause of what it says about people and individual responsibility.

This new law suit is just silly and is obviously a knee jerk reaction to try and stop the mp3 thing anyway they can. I think they'd be better served going after the sites actually distributing the MP3s not jthe ones linking to them..
I mean LYCOS has an mp3 search feature too.

This is to be expected though as people are going a little crazy for the free (beer) mp3s. I think the industry realizes the first step to distributing (selling) music on the web is to stop those that are giving it away for free. Why buy it when it s FREE.
The scale of the piracy is amazing and if people don't watch out and start acting responsibly I think draconian laws criminalizing mp3 trading (MDCA) will continue to be enacted.

I alway though computer people knew that information is value. Of course the RIAA is going to try and protect its place.

As internet companies struggle to make profits these ads are going to become more important (also as click through rates continue to drop...)

But I'lm willing to accept the ad to get at information on the net I want for free (as in beer). It would really suck if you had to pay for content each time you accessed it.

Early playstation games came in very large jewel cases.. Now just regular jewel cases.
