Reminds me of the intellivsion II which was an intelivsion in a smaller box. Also cell phones in japan are different than those in the us.. They might need a different modem. It would be cooler if it was a handheld maybe using those new Hd 650 meg MiniDiscs.
Will they make an NTSC version so it can be used stateside?
I had DSL for 6 months with no problems.. Then it just stopped working. I called, and got "were experiencing problems in your area, they'll get you back on.." Long story short 4 phone calls and 2.5 weeks later I was back on. It was frustrating, but after my status was "elevated" they did call me a couple times (once at 11 pm..) Then I got billed for a full month. I had to call them to get that taken care of.. No problems since.
I think with DSL you have to hope nothing goes wrong...
What I find most interesting about OSX is that it sits on top a "micro-kernel" mach, ala MKLinux and HURD (?). I'd like to know more about how this works? I have heard its supposed to make porting the OS easier by having systems called handled by the Kernel as an abstraction layer to the hardware (price = some speed). I think If you port the kernel you can port the OS. Might this make multiprocessors in one box more efficent?
And what exactly is the "Darwin" part? Does it include the MACH Kernel or just the BSD layer that sits on top.
I think CDs actually cost less to make than tapes (in large quantities).. I always wondered why they were so expensive... I underestood it when they came out (late 80's) because of limited capacity, but now? I also found it odd that some small bands sell there CDs at 10$ a pop for a small cd run, vs 18 dollars for a mass produced cd. I couldn't figure out how the additional promotional/engineering/mixing cost would not be offset by the "mass production"
This explains it.. Illegal tactics al-la microsoft.
Look, metalica tried to do this nicely. Nobody paid any attention.. Napster said "identify the users involved in piracy and we'll block them" So metalica hired someone to.
People have made lots of comments that "Napster" and MP3 technology aren't to blame.. The users that pirate the music are.. I agree. I feel no remorse for all those who got caught giving something for "Free" that is copyrighted (I'd like to sell a lot of things I don't own). They're going after those giving it away, not those who have for personal use which I think is fair.
Its amazing the number of people with metalica MP3s.. If each had 3 songs thats almost 1 million bootleg copies.. I think the point is clear. If you argue that 1/3 wouldn't have them because if they wern't free they wouldn't buy them, thats still a lot of albums no sold.
Slashdotters who are on the forefront of technology should relize that information has value and its up the person who creates that information what is done with it.
Actually, as a side question... if I own metalica on vinyl (I guess that dates me) do I have the legally download mp3s of the band?
This is great for land surveyors. I used to be a civil engineer and had gps been around it would have made for easier laying out of grids etc.. The non -military one wasn't accurate enough.
I think surveyors had a work around to get the higher accuracy (they set up a base station at a known point and used a remote sensor. the difference between the 2 gpses would be accurate as the error would be the same between both insturments).
I've seen laser levels contol dozer blade hieghts (you set up a spinning laser and a device on the dozer blade to read the laser and tell the operator to cut or fill more..) Now if they could get the hight of the dozer and a computer with a topo map and gps......
Couple of things.. One thing these video card reviews never seen to talk about much is how the game looks (which video cards porduce a better picture)... Are they all the same?
Seond thing is they all have there own fancy thing to make them different (anti-aliasing, T & L, bump mapping) . Are these features being taken advantage of by OpenGL, or are they just useless add-ons unless the games add specific support for these new features.
Also how can you get 100 fps on a screen running at 85 hz?
Hey, if its so hot it can't be a lap top (good for artic expeditions though.. keep the tent warm.)
I think apple tried this earlier with a combustable battery in the lap top. If memory serves it didn' t sell well.
My company just got through ripping out the water cooling system for the mainfraims because the new mainframes don't need it.I always wondered what was under that raised floor..CMOS is a wonderfull thing..
Salon had an article on those with the most to loose with napster...
The musicians think you should pay for their work...(those gready bastards...)<--note sarcasm in parens.
('ve actualled lived with musicians, its not an easy living, actually music wasn't how they made their living. They would kill for some major label support.

Suse is the first linux I installed with "virtual PC " PC emulation software. Of course it runs slowly (even at 400 mhz), so I "upgraded" to native linuxPPC (not surprisinly much faster).
I've installed (linuxppc) it on 2 machines both clones (motorala star max and Power Computing TPP), It runs pretty well even on the motorolas 160 mhz processor .
Lnux PPC seems to lack a lot of software that SusE packs as standard.
I know that linuxppc is based on red hat, does having another ppc distribution help or hurt (will some packages be for linuxppc and some for suse, diluting the ppc market?)
That firewire runs power over its "firewire" cable while ilink does not. Firewire is like USB in this way, in that low power devices can get power from the host and not need to be plugged into an outlet.
I think other than that the 2 are interchangable (I saw a 3rd party firewire card with the firewire and iLink logo..)
I used to love those games, I won Ultima I II and III (man, did I spend way to much time on those in middleschool).. They games were always entertaining and "cutting edge" on the apple//e I played them on. They had really cool sounds and tons of interesting surprises. I used to swap hints with a friend who played it too.. It should be interesting to see where he goes, but 15 years with the Ultima is a long time.. I'm interested to see what he comes up with next...
now that microsoft is competing with sony, will sony continue to support windows on its PCs.
Its ironic that Microsoft competes with sony and yet sony pays them for every PC sold.. You figure micorsoft would eventually shoot themselves in the foot..myabe sony will switch to BeOS , linux or MacOSX.
http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/00/03/biztec h/articles/15soft.html (sorry I can't get html linking to work..) NYtimes article also seems to indicate it was given away for free. MS is currently the # 3 format.
seriously though, only a company with a fat revenue stream can afford to give away ie, and now according to the nytime a free format. Its there attempt to make windows a dominant platform.
Will Sony continue to support microsoft by including Windows on its PCs? It doesn't make sence, but sony would have to unless they went to be/linux/macosX... Kinda weird huh.. No, microsoft isn't a monopoly..../Aram
Landfills are something I have great personal experience with as a former designer/inpector (no I'm not kidding).
People invariable come to the landfill looking for something they threw away (wallets, rings..), usually they never find it. If they get there befor the truck they can get the truck dumped out to the side and look.
My favorite was a consered looking woman who showed up at 7 am and wanted to know if any of us had seen a silver box she threw out a week before. No we told her, although she was welcome to look for it.. What was in the box? "An awfull lot of money...." She never found it, and we didn't either. ooops.
If the crates of space stuff were noticed, they are probably in some landfill workers back yark or were sold for scrap.
Thanks, I;m not going to give on this (I need a server..) Its just going to take some time to get used to installing an configuring.
Windows crashes regularly (I develop on NT sometimes.. uggg)
I'll get on some mailing lists, and look into some usenet groups.. Lotus has some really good ones for notes, I can imagine that the linux ones are better.
My point was that power requires learning..I guess it is exponential, in that you have to learn a lot more to get the stability. I don't like knowing only a fraction of it (aka enough to be dangerous). I'll keep working at it.
Its for an mac SE but it could be modified instructions
doesn't newer tech have an upgrade for imacs. They had it a few months ago. Old news.

The mac decoder I have requires you to download windows media player to get the codec.
I've heard bad things about windows player for mac so I didn't bother..

cool..
I gues I don't have to buy that laser reading record player..

Used to be "text.com", then it disapeared.
I hope they have ascii cows,
I love ascii cows for some reason... And "Deep thoughts by jack handy.."
Then green on black brings me back to VT-100 memories....
BE.
I'm pretty sure that I read in a couple places intel invested in BEOS. Which platform do you think they're going to work harder to support?
