This is the stupidest thing I've heard today. The only GOOD open souce software is that which complies with the Open Source Definition. It has got little or nothing to do with volounteering.
Breakup would be a positive thing......in my opinion. Each new company would necessarily be focused on maximizing value to the stakeholders. - The 'applications' company would have significant incentive to port it's stuff to alternate OS's. Suddenly, there's MS-Office available for Linux, FreeBSD, BeOS -- gosh, maybe even my old CP/M-80 box.
How could they possibly break MS into pieces while at the same time allowing the AOL/Time-Warner merger? This is just a sign that they only dare to what appears as politically correct - people _want_ them to break up MS because "everybody hates Micro$oft", but everyone watches CNN and Cartoon Network and loves it. So to hell with legal consistancy.
I downloaded the "first beta" on Christmas Eve. Don't know if it's the same release, though. It was buggy as hell. But then, it's only a tech preview. They still have a long way to go in both improving stability and implementing features.
They should definitely sue Leonaro DiCaprio. He's got nerves, using THEIR trademarked name as his first name! Also, he's got a helluva lot of money and should be worth suing.
I guess a crazy world has lots of suing potential:)
So, folks, remember that your new version announcements will not only be read by people who are intimately following your cool developments, but by people who've never heard of your project.
Huh? So one would have to follow development of Mandrake "intimately" to know it's a distribution of Linux? Should they perhaps also explain what Linux is, in case someone isn't following Linux development intimately? Hello? Even if you'd never heard of Mandrake, it would have taken you no more than a minute to find out the basics, even from the link provided.
Actually, I doubt there will be confusion over difference in version numbers between RH and Mandrake. Simply because RH will jump to version 7.0 as well, just to "keep up" with Mandrake. Yeah, it's a crazy world:)
As for Mandrake drifting away from RH, I welcome that with open arms, just as long as they remain RPM-compatible with RH, which I'm sure they will.
After I converted to linux full time, I've been missing only four things. Opera, mIRC (or, for that matter, just ANY decent graphical IRC client), a decent newsreader, and a decent mailreader.
Opera runs ok through WINE. It's a bit slow, though. mIRC runs _perfectly_ through WINE - no complaints whatsoever. For a decent news reader, try WINE'ing Free Agent, and you won't regret! There's also a new version of Kexpress around the corner. Some earlier versions of Eudora is also supposed to be WINE-able but I haven't tried it - KMail works for me, at least until Magellan is released.
You shouldn't be fooling yourself. Everyone knows what a huge memory hog X is (internal TCP-IP, anyone?); put something like KDE or GNOME on top of that, and then try to run Netscape...
And then go back to Windows. You'll feel the difference in speed, no matter how much RAM or CPU you have, even on Windows NT.
Ok, so there's the possibility of running pure TWM and browsing the web with Lynx. Or better yet, ditch X and be a console freak. THERE's speed for ya, and imagine how kewl you'd be.
All I'm saying is, why try to be something we're not? A lot of people hear amazing things about how fast Linux is, and as soon as they try it out for themselves, they post to newsgroups asking what's wrong with their installation since it's so slow compared to Windows. So let's get real.
How come the posts aren't given a year-stamp, only dates? When I search for old stories, there's no way of telling which year it's from. This will become an increasingly important lack as the years go on and/. becomes older...
I mean, by really old common-law type standards, first person to put a flag on the territory gets it, yes?
I suppose so, but as everyone knows, when the eagle took off from the moon, the flag blew down and it's supposedly not stuck to the surface of the moon today.
Could someone please explain in simple terms why QT is not seen as 'free'? (as in speech) Didn't it get the seal of approval a while back, with the new QT2.0 licence?
Yes, but consider that the current stable KDE version uses a pre-2.0 Qt, which is non-free. KDE fan as I might be, I sympathize with Red Hat on excluding the current KDE from the "RMS" version of their distribution.

I stand corrected. Although I still can't see how a monopoly could be for the better of people. :)
And how it that a _positive_ thing? :)

They were built yesterday, it appears. How's that for cutting edge.

The Australian government could probably get away with it ;) Hopefully the brits won't, though.
What do you really know about XML? :)

Sounds like Katz is closely related to Eliza then :)
And would it be possible to run JBF with any other distros than RedHat?

Need I say more?
Australia is an extreme. Has China or Cuba gone to such lengths?? I cannot believe Australians put up with this. Or maybe they're enforced to, by law?
Too bad that's not the case with my 433Mhz, 64MB system. There must be something wrong with my installation ;)

here
I noticed after I posted! I also put up a mirror here in Norway!
Only now your mirror is /.'ed too, so I can't get to the files.. :(
Have a look at Mosfet's site to get a better idea of what KDE2 will be like, for those wondering! :)
Now the CNN survey will be totally biased :)
