    Part of the problem is that many of the people who live in these regional areas can't afford to rebuild in a more 'modern' or fireproof way. A lot of them didn't even have insurance because they couldn't afford it.

    I remember reading something a while ago about the bionic ear was an Australian invention

    Yep and Cochlear are still kicking along pretty well, partly because their main competitor in the US has been having some issues with the FDA.

    There's actually a Bionic Ear Lane not far from where I work (and there's now an AC DC Lane in the city too)

    That's nothing - half of the online help in Windows is like this too. Tells you the basic obvious stuff you can work out but no details to be had anywhere

    But if someone makes a careful and articulate post explaining the things they know for a fact, the things they suspect might be true, and the things they just don't know on... these people aren't heeded. Because on Slashdot, it's all about the certainty, not the knowledge, and especially not the knowledge that your knowledge has limits.
    I'd argue that this is a society-level problem and certainly not restricted to /. The media is full of interviews and news stories focussed on left-extreme vs right-extreme with no thought for the sensible middle ground where most people probably hang out
