See if you can find a 20 hour TiVo, I think certain Walmarts still had them and they were only like 149 bucks (maybe less), then throw a 100 gig HD in there and rock on with your like 100 hours TiVo.
Wonder how this will affect the hack factor of Tivo products. Tivo didn't make it easy, but they always left the door open, and they never sued (far as I know) over any hacks or consumer upgrades like others have. I wonder how Sony will take this though? Will we start to see DMCA lawsuits if I hack my Trinitron/Tivo?
What is wrong with the Niponese, give me a break, a car with emotions, whats next a toliet with emotions. It is only happy if you have a regular movement in the morning and don't spray the bowl? I don't really understand how this would attract anyone. Maybe they are just differnt over in Nipon, who knows. I think it would probably freak most Americans out.
Regular people are starting to see that this whole monolpoly thing really isn't a good idea. Duh, now that they have you locked down they are gonna give you the whole broomstick, no reach around, no kiss. Oh well people let it happen to themselves.
I guess most people here seem to miss the point. But then again I am an engineer and I like to be loyal to my job too. But when it all boils down to things you need to cover your own ass, and feed your family. So lets be truthful, is staying on the ship when you know it is going down really such a good idea? I guess it would help if we had a little more info on the company? Can someone provide that?
No offense but I think you are in total denial. The odds of this company being a diamond in the rough are astronomical. But then again, a great many people play the lottery. Maybe schools should make statistics a basic requirement in highschool. Sure, if somehow the company is one the greats just having problems then sure take stock, but lets be honest here, it is unlikely if they are asking people to take pay cuts that they are headed for great things. I talked to a buddy that does corporate outplacement, and he says when they ask you stuff like this, you can pretty much be 99% sure the company is gonna tank. If you want your future riding on that 1%, by all means listen to this guy.
I would let them lay you off, assuming they will give you a nice servrance package or some sort of compensation. If you agree to a pay cut, then you may end up forfieting proper compensation. If they aren't giving a severance package, take a pay cut and find another job, cause odds are this place is going down HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and whatever you do, don't let them pay you in stock, unless you are out of toliet paper, cause it probably won't be good for much else.
No offense but if I am paying for it, it should all be commercial free, I mean I already have radio stations with commericals I can listen to for free, why would I want to pay for more freaking commercials (and don't use cable as an example, I am thinking more along the lines of HBO and Cinemax, not CNN)
I read about why it really wasn't worthwhile to mirror IDE drives. Bascially the MTBF for IDE's in a system are almost identical, so if one device dies, the other will more then likely die as well. Also, if you have them on one controller (I would figure this embedded device would only have one?) then you would be totally S.O.L. if you lost the master.
True to Dilbert I just requisitioned a bunch of boxes and old out of date doc (that I said I needed) and built a wall on the back. Then I setup a screen saver with differnt terminal window caps in it and arranged my system so even if someone got past the wall they couldn't see my face. So all in all it made a great place to sleep.
And damn did I want a regular chair. The fabric is rough, and that stupid back support thing always felt like it was jabbing be in the spine. I prefer regular chairs, with the hydralic hieght adjustment.
Police are paid less then 30k a year, they are for the most part bullies and brutes. Can we really expect people of this caliber, paid little, to actually do things other than behave like themselves.
Most decent APC UPS's will give you a power consumption figure if you use their UPS managment software (which is free for Linux). http://www.apcc.com/products/management/pcp_linux. cfm. Or you could get a DMM and go a little ad hoc work yourself (don't know how electronically inclined you are, I would have to break out some college notes myself).
Man this sucks, I remember being a little kind and they changed the pronunciation of Uranus from Ur-Anus' to UrA'nus. Now there is no planet Pluto, total suck.
This was actually a popular concept in a lot of science fiction books in the late 70's and 80's. Was something people would do for fun once the "Space Elevators" were built.
I fear that if 'e-books' become the norm what will have to libraries if statutes like this remain? Not to mention the fact that editing history would become inifintly easier if all information was electronic.
He who controls the past controls the present and the future!!!!!

Will look for gravity waves and such too (little more direct then the gravity lenseing effect): http://www.ngst.stsci.edu/
They will have to keep Hubble going till at least 2010 though, cause most of the aforementioned missions aren't till 2004-2007 (at the earliest).

The comment about not having a replacement isn't accurate, here are a few of the NGST (Next Generation Space Telescopes), that NASA wants to loft:

I was wondering, hmmm xemu is the master
Come on, who in their right mind will pay for this? Sure I would pay 15 bucks for a CD, something physical, but 15 bucks for an ISO, F*** that.
