I'm glad to know I'm not crazy. I also have to use a mac from time to time at work, and everything about it just seems so unproductive to me. Given that it's touted as the pinnacle of user design, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me for not being able to see it that way. I especially love the super sleek mouse our designer uses. It's so sleek, symmetrical, and wireless, you can't even tell which way is front until you notice your cursor movement is inverted or not! (I could go on and on with similar examples, but I really should get back to work, rather than diving into a long rant...)

I am no command-line snob. I really appreciate a good UI that stays out of my way and lets me get my job done quickly and efficiently. I am all for the values Apple is going for in their products. I just don't think macs hold up to that standard is all.

  4. Last I checked, the major players in the global financial network have actual power. And most central/federal governments, too.

Only the people have the actual power. Financiers, governments, crackers, drug cartels, religions, etc. exist solely at the will of the people.

The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate.
    --Noam Chomsky

The will of the people is irrelevant when that will can be shaped through effective propaganda.

The only way to get our power back now is to fight for a free and open internet. The powers that be know this, and will continue to fight against us under the guise of "anti piracy". Do not be fooled, these people are not stupid. They are quite aware that lost sales through piracy is negligible to their bottom line. The real loss to them is the total control over the distribution channels, and thus, control over the national dialog of opinion.

I personally can't stand it, but I think it really just comes down to what your used to. I've work with KDevelop, Eclipse, and VS, all of which I find at least tolerable. I just couldn't get used to XCode though. The editor is not as advanced IMHO, with things like text selection, auto formatting, and cursor placement/tabbing while writing code. Code re-factoring also leaves much to be desired. I will concede the "wonky" windowing behavior is just because I'm not used to using a Mac, but at the very least, it seemed more difficult to get custom views and perspectives to work the way you want them to. Eclipse is probably the best for that last one, which is why I usually go with that, provided it has an extension for the language/tooling I'm using at the time.

Language choice is becoming largely irrelevant. It's all about the end build target these days. IMHO, It's better to build your core architecture in a platform agnostic way, and then extend it into specific UI / hardware implementations as needed.

The problem is not an engineering one, it's a political one. The development eco system in Linux is much more conducive to a repo than the windows eco system. Developers of proprietary windows apps are used to having full control over their application's deployment, and I think it would be difficult to get them to change, short of an Apple-esque ban hammer on apps loaded from outside a centrally controlled repo. OSx Isn't there yet, but it seems like that's the direction they're going. iOS is already there. I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing.

Because you couldn't come up with my sequence of 0s and 1s without me. If you want to break it down that way why should someone get copyright on a book just because it is a sequence of black dots that make up things we recognize as letters. Or paintings because they are just splashes of different pigments on a wall.

Copyright wasn't created to sustain the creation of art. It wasn't (and still isn't) about making sure the artist gets rewarded for the effort. It was, and still is, about rewarding those entrepreneurs who are willing to take the risk of copying those works and distributing the copies. Creating art was never the expensive part. Making copies so that society could enjoy the art was. Today that is no longer true. No one needs an incentive to distribute the works, people will do it for free. Copyright is an anachronism. The behavior, it was created to promote, now happens automatically and without intervention of any kind. Copyright has outlived the purpose for which it was created, and now serves only to prevent the very activity it was supposed to promote. Ask yourself, if there was no copyright, would society as a whole be better off going forward? The answer is absolutely yes. Artists don't create works for money, they create works because they can't help themselves. They will continue to do it even if they are not paid to do so because it is a part of who they are. If you want to do something good for society, figure out how to make sure that artists get the food, shelter, and tools they need to create, and let the internet worry about how to get those finished products into the hands of the people. That will make the world a better place.
