    That's exactly what killed Hellgate London, they never got over the stench of their launch. By the time the game got axed they'd fixed most of the problems and had a fun little game, but not enough people were willing to give them a second try, or even a first try after reading the reviews.

    You'd think developers and publishers would be able to predict that kind of result, but obviously not.

    Is that the cruise guy with the foghorn sound? Not lately, but I got a bunch of them this winter. (I suppose that's a good time to try to sell cruises in Canuckistan)

    The "cardholder services" guys are my current scourge, at least 3 or 4 calls a week.

    Canadian construction standards have also come a long way, but almost everyone has done the simple, high-payoff retrofits like insulation strips in doorways, caulking, etc. etc.

    I suppose it's only human nature, when you're walking around barefoot making breakfast and a subzero draft rolls over your toes, it's RATHER NOTICEABLE. Aircon leaks, not so much.

    bigger houses in USA = more air to heat/cool

    I think there are a lot more gas ranges/water heaters in Europe

    I think front load washing machines are much more common in Europe

    Let's not forget the stereotypical smelly Frenchman, it is perfectly possible to have first-world societies where everyone doesn't shower each and every day.

    Just a comment but from what I see on the TV renovation shows, every window in California is single-pane and insulation is a liberal myth. In Canada you'd freeze to death, in Cali apparently you just crank the AC a little higher and wonder why the power bill is so high.

    Install LTSP on your home server, and use the laptop as a LTSP thin client. You'll reduce boot time because there's hardly anything running on the client machine, and probably get better performance once everything is running (assuming the server is faster then your old laptop).

    It's not mutually exclusive. The people who buy Geneforge are hardcore RPG nerds, like me, who have already played a bunch of NWN modules, like me.

    Spiderweb games have a plot. People buy them for the plot, not the graphics.

    The people who buy the latest Geneforge game have already played NWN and Oblivion.

    There is some truth to that, but I've found a pretty tight correlation between "size" and "pain-in-the-ass-to-work-for".

    Besides, after the dot-bomb and current financial meltdown, appeals to the wisdom of the stock market won't convince me.

    The only thing I've ever seen to work is having good people acting on good faith with each other. Any attempt to impose policies or metrics or rules seems doomed to being gamed.

    Too bad it's so rare to work with good people acting on good faith...
