Yeah, I saw that. Good offer, but it's for a limited time only... And $199 is still a bit steep... Even for the "Desktop" version (which, by the way reminds me of the $99 Delphi Standard version...)
Kudos to Borland for Kylix. Great stuff. However, they should've kept up the tradition of selling a $99 version for devlopers short on cash that would like to write commercial applications... Like they've always done with Delphi and Builder. I, for one, would like to use Kylix for several projects, but unfortunately, not all of are them open-source...
Duh. What else is new? This is the way it works right now. Individuals have next to NO rights compared to the big, "evil" Corperations(tm). All we can do is keep fighting to reclaim those rights lost in Corporate America(tm)... That's my toughts on the subject, anyways...
I remember DONKEY... But not from the IBM PC... I have it on a C64 disk... Wasn't very impressive by CBM-64 standards, but it was damn entertaining:)... You can still find it on the 'net... Both the C64 ROM version and the "abandonware" IBM version...

I'm a U**x Systems Administrator, and I can safely say that you should have no problems with cultural- and language barriers in Europe. At least not in the IT field. The professions' language is English, anyways, right. Off course, this WILL depend a little on what country you'd like to live in. France and the lower countries tend to be a little less English proficient, but in Scandinavia, Germany and Great Britain, that shouldn't be a problem. At least not at work...
Actually, the first Windows-type interface was made by Xerox, and was stolen by Apple... Mr. Gates then stole the windows-interface from them... Pirates pirateing pirates... Funny...

I'll agree that Al Gore really helped the internet along when he invented it;-), but take a closer look at the man. You say he's smarter than GWB. Gimme a break. The man gets a question, mentiones it for 2 seconds, then goes off ranting about something only remotely relevant. He makes faces when GWB's talking, saying without opening his mouth: "GWB, you're so stupid..." Do you want a man like that discussing nuclear disarmament for example? The man is incompetent. And if you're into high-tech and internet, please consider the price we must pay if he's elected. Kiss free speech online good-bye. Al Gore's all about censorship; he wants to control what YOU should be allowed to see! Who the hell wants this? Fucking paternalists...
And about inheretance tax: Dude, you've got it sooooo wrong. It's not about big, evil corporations. It's about the guy inhereting a farm from his parents, and then is forced to sell it when he can't come up with the insane 40% tax, and is then forced to sell what should rightfully be his! Don't give me that rich brat shit. If a rich old geezer gives away his money to charity instead of his kids, then he'd do so nomatter the inheritance tax.
You have no clue what the hell you're talking about. Get your prioreties straight, man.
This is a geek site, and if you're a geek, you should be concerned about privacy. This is a breach thereof, as well as a brute-force corporate [A.K.A. Microsoft] tactic. Forcing a re-seller to give out confidential and personal information about their customers is wrong. If Motorola wants to know their customers, they should be satisfied with the warranty cards that some people send in, or polls etc. Perhaps product registration as a requirement. (I oppose this strongly, as well...)
Oh, and by the way, you don't really have to read Slashdot, you know.
I'm tired of the constant compromise of my privacy. Unfortunately, I'm not a MotorOla user. If I was I'd sue the motherf****rs. Even though I know I'm already in thousands of databases worldwide (I have a VISA card, bank account, Safeway discount card etc.), I still will not tolerate this kind of mafia tactics. Screw them. Who the hell do they think they are. My advise to resellers of Motorola products: switch to a different brand. Even if they [Motorola] should decide to withdraw this "request", we still know what kind of business they're pushing. We don't need their "steenking" products anyways. (They're really not that great to begin with...) Personally, I'll never buy another Motorola product again. Just as with Sony, (See related Slashdot article, I will now boycott Motorola, and encourage others to do the same. Without consumers, no corperation is able to survive. We have the power to make these corperations listen. I suggest we now USE that power. Let them know, that we will NOT bend over and take this kind of crap in the tailpipe.
Just wanted to add to this conversation that I myself have done some testing. Might not be relevant, but here it is;
Our website get 450k-500k hits a day.
Our current system is a Sun Ultra 10 with Solaris 2.6 and Netscape Enterprise server. (Suitespot.)
We tried to move the content to a dual P2 450 and NT+IIS. It croaked. Even after it had been tweaked by actual professionals, it BSOD'ed or just crashed after a fairly short time. We went back to the Sun box. (Customers were getting pissy about getting time-outs an' such...
For our next system: OpenBSD 2.7, Apache, mySql and PHP3. Now THAT's gonna rock!
Dude, the US govt are still training para-millitary groups for guerillias in South America, Africa, Asia and the Middle-East, as well as having more than their share of spys and agents all over the world. So you see, the US is no "mom-and-pop" operation either...
Read your posting twice, and really couldn't find the logic... Where can you register a.us, anyways?
Think you misunderstood me. The point I was trying to make (and, yes, I do realize that I didn't make myself clear enough), was that the whole structure of Windows NT makes it less secure than Linux/*BSD based OS'es. And I didn't mean that RH, Caldera or SuSE or whatever are great at delivering packaged-and-ready fixes in hours. Because they don't. The Distros are generally bad at that. I'm talking about the actual developers, not the distros.
And No, not everyone chooses OS'es for security. No OS is 100% secure anyway. Even OpenBSD (all tho OpenBSD comes really, really close...)
As for my users, well, I no longer work with NT (even tho I'm hold a MCE) I'm currently working as a *nix sysadmin. And I'm never going back to the unstable BOD-filled Windozw NT.
Besides, the users could care less as long as they get their emails, their web-stuff, and their apps. Everyone here that works as a sysadmin or other technical stuff know that this is true...;-)
Oh, and the Redmond "joke" was only a joke about how poorly written this article was and how little research went into it. I'm not a conspiracy-theorist. Jeez, dude...
Just a tought: He never mentiones what kind of bugs we're talking about here. Windows NT is full of security holes, and it takes them weeks if not months to fix it. With Linux, it can (literaly) be hours before someone creates a fix.
Another thing he fails to mention is the capabilities of the two OS'es, such as stability, scalability, in which Linux is clearly the best.
I spent 3 years as a NT administrator, but after trying out Linux / *BSD, I'm NEVER going back...
Calling Linux the worst OS of all time seems really silly. This man doesn't have all the facts straight... But he's free to express his opinion, just like all us Linux advocates. Just wonder if his paycheck includes anything that can be traced back to Redmond, tho...;-)
